BeeRef is a free, open-source desktop app for arranging reference images in a board you can view while you create. It is listed for Windows, Linux, and macOS, with tools for transforming and arranging images, adding notes, and keeping its window on top. What is BeeRef?

What BeeRef can do
Arrange and transform images
You can move, scale, rotate, crop, and flip images on the board. BeeRef also documents batch-scaling images to a common width, height, or size, and arranging them vertically, horizontally, or to use space efficiently. Add text notes to label references or record observations.
Keep references visible
The project documents an always-on-top mode and the option to hide the window’s title bar. These features can be useful when you want a floating reference board beside another application. Whether that setup fits depends on your screen and workflow.

What is a .bee file?
A .bee file is a BeeRef scene. The project README describes the format as a SQLite database and says that images are embedded in the file as PNG or JPG data, in an sqlar table.

Embedding the image data means the scene contains its references rather than merely pointing to image files stored elsewhere. The trade-off is that scenes containing images can take up substantial storage. The README provides an example of extracting embedded content with SQLite tooling, but extraction is an advanced file-handling option rather than a normal in-app workflow.
What does the latest listed release add?
The official release page lists BeeRef 0.3.3, dated May 5, 2024. Its notes include a color sampler that copies a sampled color to the clipboard in hexadecimal format, configurable mouse and wheel controls, and fixes for import and application issues. Earlier release notes list SVG scene export, adjustable image opacity, grayscale display, editable keyboard shortcuts, and image cropping; these are not all features newly introduced in version 0.3.3.
