Krita 5.3.4 and Krita 6.0.4 are the latest listed maintenance releases, both dated September 15, 2026, according to the official release history. Both branches include the rewritten text engine; Krita 5.3 is built with Qt 5, while Krita 6.0 uses Qt 6 and adds Linux Wayland color management, including HDR support.
Choose based on your platform and needs: 5.3 is the Qt 5 option, while 6.0 is the feature-specific choice if you need Wayland color management or HDR on a compatible Linux setup. Krita recommended 5.3.0 for real work at launch in March 2026, when 6.0 was considered early access after the Qt transition; that dated guidance does not establish the relative stability of today’s 5.3.4 and 6.0.4 releases.

This is not simply a bigger feature set in version 6
The version numbers suggest a conventional progression in which Krita 6 contains everything in 5.3 plus a separate set of features. The more useful way to understand the paired releases is as two builds of a shared major update.

- Krita 5.3 is built with Qt 5.
- Krita 6.0 is built with Qt 6 and adds Linux Wayland color-management support.
Both branches include the new text features. Krita 6’s distinguishing feature for Linux artists is its Wayland display integration, rather than a different text-engine release.
At launch, Krita’s release announcement recommended 5.3.0 for real work and described 6.0 as experimental following the Qt 6 transition. This is launch-period advice, not evidence of a current stability ranking between 5.3.4 and 6.0.4.
The text engine is a practical redesign
The paired release rewrites Krita’s text tool and text object. The release announcement highlights on-canvas editing, full OpenType support, and text flowing into shapes. The release notes also describe wrapped text, text on a path, and a text-properties docker.
On-canvas editing
The new workflow lets you edit text directly on the canvas, making it easier to work with text as part of an illustration or composition.

OpenType and professional typography
The release announcement describes full OpenType support. This gives users access to OpenType features provided by their fonts; results can still depend on the font and document.
Text inside shapes and along paths
The release notes describe text flowing inside shapes and text on a path. These features can help with shaped captions, labels, and curved lettering.
Text properties
A text-properties docker is among the text-related features described in the release notes.
Compatibility precautions
The release materials reviewed describe a rewritten text system but do not provide a current compatibility assessment for every older document or font. Keep copies of important files and check their appearance and editing behavior before relying on either branch in production.

What Krita 6’s Wayland HDR support actually does
Krita 6.0 supports Linux Wayland color management, which Krita says enables HDR support. The release notes also identify fractional scaling and 10-bit display support. These are display-pipeline capabilities: having Krita 6 alone does not ensure that a particular desktop, compositor, or display supports them.
Keep these related concepts distinct:
- HDR image data: image content with a high-dynamic-range representation.
- HDR display output: presenting content through a color-managed display pipeline that supports HDR.
- Wayland color management: the display-management integration Krita 6.0 adds for Linux Wayland.
The 5.3/6.0 release notes recommend KWin 6.4.4 or newer for the implementation described and note that the Wayland color-management protocol was young. Check your compositor and workflow rather than assuming every Wayland setup behaves identically.
Check your Linux display setup
Before choosing Krita 6.0 for HDR or other Wayland display features:
- Check that you are using a Linux Wayland session and that your compositor supports the relevant color-management implementation.
- For the implementation described in the release notes, check for KWin 6.4.4 or newer.
- Confirm that your display and system configuration support the output you need.
- Test the actual Krita build and your workflow before depending on the feature.
Other notable improvements
The paired 5.3/6.0 release includes more than the text-engine changes. The official release notes document the shared release features. Check those notes for the full feature list for your platform and build.

Krita 5.3 versus Krita 6.0
| Need or setup | Version to consider | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You need the Qt 5 build | Krita 5.3.4 | Krita 5.3 is built with Qt 5. |
| You need the Qt 6 build | Krita 6.0.4 | Krita 6.0 is built with Qt 6. |
| You need Linux Wayland color management, HDR, fractional scaling, or 10-bit display support | Krita 6.0.4 | These are among the Wayland-related capabilities identified for Krita 6.0; check compositor compatibility. |
| You are deciding based on production stability alone | Compare and test both | The launch recommendation favored 5.3.0 in March 2026, but the reviewed sources do not establish current comparative stability for 5.3.4 and 6.0.4. |
| You use Android | Check current platform availability | The release notes’ Android availability statement applied at launch and was not independently verified for current releases. |
This is a feature and platform decision, not a verified ranking of current stability. Krita’s launch recommendation for 5.3.0 was specific to the March 2026 Qt 6 transition; the sources reviewed do not settle which maintenance branch is more stable now.

- Choose the branch for your requirement. Start with 5.3.4 for the Qt 5 build or 6.0.4 if you need Qt 6 or its Wayland display features, as listed in Krita’s release history.
- Back up important documents. Keep original files untouched before testing.
- Test representative documents. Include text-heavy files and any documents central to your workflow.
- Compare the results. Check text appearance, editing behavior, and exported output against your existing files.
- Test display features on your own setup. Confirm your compositor and display support the Wayland color-management capabilities you need.
- Adopt the branch only after your own acceptance test. The reviewed sources do not provide a current comparative stability test.
