Best overall for kids: 3Doodler Start+. Best for most adults and older teens: 3Doodler Flow. Best for advanced control: MYNT3D 3D Pen PRO. Best budget alternative: SCRIB3D P1. The right choice changes with age because the Start+ uses a low-temperature, child-oriented system, while the other pens use hot extrusion and require older-user handling.
The best 3D pen depends mainly on age and filament format. For a child aged 6 or older, the 3Doodler Start+ is the clearest choice because it uses a low-temperature system designed for children and has no hot external parts. For most older teens and adults, the 3Doodler Flow is the most flexible pick because it accepts industry-standard 1.75 mm spooled filament. The MYNT3D 3D Pen PRO is the stronger choice for users who want fine temperature and feed control, while the SCRIB3D P1 is a reasonable budget alternative. The 3Doodler Create+ makes the most sense for someone who already owns that brand’s 2.85 mm filament ecosystem.
These are documented-feature recommendations, not results from hands-on testing. No controlled comparison of temperature accuracy, clog rates, durability, comfort, or finished artwork was available for this guide. Prices, stock, colors, warranties, and regional availability can change, so verify those details before buying.

Age guidance and compatibility above are based on manufacturer or product documentation. A low-temperature children’s pen is not risk-free: supervise children and follow the supplied instructions.
1. Best 3D pen for kids: 3Doodler Start+
The 3Doodler Start+ is the best fit for younger children in this comparison because its entire design is built around reducing contact with high-temperature components. 3Doodler markets it for children ages 6 and up, and its education materials describe it as the kid-oriented, low-temperature version. The company says there are no hot external parts during normal use.
The Start+ uses its own Eco-Filament rather than ordinary 1.75 mm or 2.85 mm 3D-printing filament. Its getting-started material says the pen warms in about 30 seconds, and the extruded plastic hardens after a few seconds. That makes it suitable for drawing simple shapes, tracing stencils, and building guided projects without requiring a child to manage the material settings used by adult hot-nozzle pens.
Why it stands out for children
- Age-specific design: It is marketed for ages 6 and up rather than being an adult tool adapted for children.
- Lower-temperature operation: The documented operating approach is more appropriate for supervised creative play than an exposed high-temperature nozzle.
- Learning support: The official app and tutorial ecosystem includes projects, stencils, and guided activities, which can matter more to a beginner than advanced temperature controls.
- Simple material choice: The dedicated refill system reduces the temptation to experiment with unsuitable plastics.
What parents should know before buying
Start+ is not a general-purpose standard-filament pen. 3Doodler identifies Start+ refills and accessories as the compatible ecosystem, and the company states that using third-party filament can void an active warranty. Refill cost, color selection, and local availability therefore belong in the buying decision. A cheaper pen is not necessarily cheaper to operate if its consumables are difficult to source.
Adult supervision is still appropriate. Children should be shown how to load filament, keep the pen pointed away from skin and eyes, and use it on a suitable surface. The low-temperature design supports the recommendation; it does not replace supervision or the manufacturer’s safety instructions.
2. Best for most adults and older teens: 3Doodler Flow
The 3Doodler Flow is the most balanced choice for an adult or older teenager who wants a practical, flexible pen rather than a child-focused starter system. It is designed for ages 14 and up because it uses higher temperatures and has an exposed nozzle.

- Turn your ordinary drawings into 3D works of art
- Stepless speed slider lets you regulate flow for optimal control of material while you're drawing
- New: ultrasonic sealed nozzle is nearly clog-proof and provides market leading durability
- The Super 3D Printing Pen is great for kids, artists and engineers of all ages
- Kit includes 3 colors of PLA plastic filament A/C adapter and slim, ergonomic touch pen with 1 year limited warranty
Its biggest advantage is filament compatibility. The Flow is designed for industry-standard 1.75 mm spooled filament and supports PLA and ABS. That means users can buy filament in the same general format used by many other desktop 3D-printing systems instead of relying on short, model-specific strands. Standard diameter does not mean every material is automatically suitable, however: temperature range, material quality, and the manufacturer’s compatibility guidance still matter.
Useful controls and included equipment
- An integrated LCD shows operating information.
- Adjustable temperature settings let users work with supported material types.
- The pen uses a continuous-feed spool format rather than only short proprietary pieces.
- 3Doodler documents PLA and ABS support.
- The starter set is listed with eight 1.75 mm PLA filament spools, a power adapter, maintenance tool, stencil sheet, and guide.
- A portable battery pack may be used if it meets the pen’s power requirements.
The Flow is therefore a good recommendation for an adult who already has 1.75 mm PLA or ABS, wants to practice freehand modeling, or prefers to keep filament sourcing open. It is also a sensible step up from a child-focused pen for a teenager who understands that the nozzle is hot.
The important limitation
Although the format is standard, 3Doodler does not guarantee the quality or behavior of every third-party filament. Poorly sized, contaminated, brittle, or unsuitable filament can cause feeding problems in any pen. Start with supported PLA, use the temperature guidance for that material, and change materials only when you understand the relevant settings.
3. Best for temperature and material control: MYNT3D 3D Pen PRO
The MYNT3D 3D Pen PRO is the feature-rich option for an adult maker who expects to adjust settings and work with more than one type of thermoplastic. Its documented controls include an OLED display, adjustable feed, and temperature adjustment in one-degree increments.
Recommended Free Tools
MYNT3D lists a replaceable ultrasonically sealed nozzle and compatibility with thermoplastic filament intended for approximately 140–230°C. The listed material examples include PLA, ABS, bronze-infused filament, and wood-infused filament. That broader material range gives the PRO a stronger case for experimentation than a basic beginner pen, provided the user follows the temperature requirements for each material and uses appropriate ventilation.
What comes in the kit
The documented kit includes three colors of PLA, an AC adapter, and a one-year limited warranty. The official product page listed the pen at $59.99 at the time of research, but pricing is not permanent. Some MYNT3D storefront views also showed the PRO as sold out, so check current stock before treating it as the practical choice.
MYNT3D has used language describing the nozzle as “clog-proof.” That is a manufacturer claim about the nozzle design, not an independently verified clog-rate or durability result. The replaceable nozzle is still a useful documented feature because it gives the owner a defined replacement path if the original nozzle becomes damaged or unusable.

- Watch imagination come to life with the Professional 3D Pen
- Adjustable feed lets you regulate speed & flow for optimal control of material while you're drawing
- Temperature is adjustable in 1 degree increments from 140 to 230 C, for optimal fine-tuning
- Large, OLED display lets you monitor temperature of material to help you achieve a wide variety of effects
- Kit includes 3 colors of PLA plastic filament, A/C adapter and slim, ergonomic pen with 1 year limited warranty
Who should buy it?
Choose the PRO when temperature precision, adjustable material flow, and nozzle replacement are more important than the simplest possible learning experience. It is overqualified for a child making occasional stencil projects, but appealing to an adult who wants to tune the pen for different materials. Treat it as a hot tool and follow the manufacturer’s age, material, and ventilation guidance.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →4. Best budget alternative: SCRIB3D P1
The SCRIB3D P1 is a reasonable budget alternative for a teen or adult who wants basic control features without moving to the most expensive option in this group. SCRIB3D describes it as beginner-friendly, with a display, stepless speed control, and support for PLA and ABS.
The official kit description includes PLA plastic, a power adapter, manual, and stencil guide. Retailer descriptions add three starter PLA colors, a stencil book, and a project guide; exact contents can vary by seller or bundle, so check the listing you are buying rather than assuming every package is identical.
The P1’s display and continuously adjustable speed are useful on paper. Slower feed can help a user work more deliberately on detail, while faster feed can make filling larger forms less tedious. The available evidence for this model is primarily manufacturer, retailer, and manual documentation, however. There is not enough independent evidence here to promise better durability, fewer clogs, smoother lines, or superior finished models.
For a beginner who wants a display and PLA/ABS compatibility at a lower purchase price, the P1 deserves consideration. For a child, the presence of beginner accessories does not make it equivalent to the low-temperature Start+; the P1 should be treated as a hot-nozzle tool for older users.
5. Where the 3Doodler Create+ fits
The Create+ is a niche recommendation rather than the default adult choice. It uses 3Doodler’s 2.85 mm Create+ filament and has exposed hot components. Manufacturer documentation identifies it as adult use only and warns that the nozzle can burn users. A 3Doodler education page describes it as best suited to users 13 and older because of its operating temperatures and exposed interchangeable nozzle. When those descriptions differ, the safer interpretation is to treat it as an adult tool and allow only closely supervised use by an older teenager who meets the current instructions.
Create+ supports PLA, ABS, FLEXY, and WOOD filament under the corresponding temperature settings. It can also make sense for someone who already owns Create+ accessories or a supply of the model’s 2.85 mm straight-cut strands. For a new buyer, though, the proprietary format is less convenient than the Flow’s 1.75 mm spool system.

Create+ documentation also warns about ventilation when using styrene-containing materials such as ABS and identifies burn and inhalation hazards from unsuitable materials. Do not use it as a child’s first pen simply because it has an education-oriented page or interchangeable nozzles.
3Doodler Start+ vs. Flow vs. Create+: the filament decision
Filament format is one of the most important differences in this category. A pen may look similar to another model while accepting completely different consumables.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| Model | Filament format | Supported materials documented in the research | Buying implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3Doodler Start+ | Dedicated Start+ Eco-Filament | Use the Start+ system and its compatible refills | Easy to keep within the intended ecosystem, but limited replacement choice |
| 3Doodler Flow | 1.75 mm spooled filament | PLA and ABS | Broad sourcing potential, but third-party quality is not guaranteed |
| MYNT3D PRO | Thermoplastic filament suited to approximately 140–230°C | PLA, ABS, bronze-infused, and wood-infused examples | More material flexibility; temperature selection becomes more important |
| SCRIB3D P1 | Documentation supports PLA and ABS | PLA and ABS | Buy compatible material for the pen and verify bundle contents |
| Create+ | Dedicated 2.85 mm Create+ filament | PLA, ABS, FLEXY, and WOOD | Best fit for existing owners of the Create+ ecosystem |
Do not infer compatibility from diameter alone. The Start+ is the clearest example: its low-temperature system is not a substitute for a standard-filament pen. Conversely, a pen that accepts 1.75 mm filament still needs material that falls within its supported temperature and feeding requirements.
How to choose the right pen
Choose by the user’s age and supervision
- Ages 6–12: Start with the 3Doodler Start+. Its documented low-temperature design and guided projects are more relevant than adult-level controls.
- Older teens: Consider the Flow for a supervised user who wants standard spooled filament. Treat the MYNT3D PRO, P1, and Create+ as hot-tool options and follow their current instructions.
- Adults: Choose Flow for general flexibility, MYNT3D PRO for control and material experimentation, P1 for a lower-cost entry point, or Create+ if you already own its filament and accessories.
Choose by filament economics
Dedicated strands can make a child’s pen straightforward to use, but they restrict where you can shop for replacements. A standard 1.75 mm pen can make it easier to buy ordinary PLA filament, although compatibility and quality still need checking. Before buying, compare the initial pen price with the cost, length, color range, and availability of the refill system you will actually use.
Choose by control requirements
- Simple guided projects: Prioritize age-appropriate temperature design, stencils, tutorials, and project cards.
- General adult drawing: An LCD and adjustable temperature, as on the Flow, provide a useful balance.
- Material experimentation: The MYNT3D PRO’s OLED display, one-degree temperature adjustment, adjustable feed, and replaceable nozzle are the most relevant features.
- Budget learning: The P1’s display and stepless speed control are useful, but do not assume they prove better reliability or print quality.
Choose by ecosystem
If the recipient already owns a pen, buying compatible consumables or replacement parts is often more useful than switching brands. Confirm the exact model before buying 3Doodler Start+ refills, 1.75 mm filament, Create+ 2.85 mm filament, or a replacement nozzle. Similar-looking products are not automatically interchangeable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Safety: the difference between low-temperature and hot-nozzle pens
The most important safety distinction is not whether the package says “beginner.” It is whether the pen extrudes at a low temperature designed for children or uses a hot nozzle intended for older users.
For the Start+
- Use the compatible Start+ Eco-Filament and follow the current instructions.
- Maintain adult supervision even though the pen is designed around low-temperature operation.
- Keep the pen, filament, and cooling plastic away from eyes, mouths, hair, and unsuitable surfaces.
- Use the supplied learning materials to teach loading and drawing before allowing independent projects.
For hot-nozzle models
- Treat the Flow, Create+, MYNT3D PRO, and SCRIB3D P1 as older-user tools unless the current manufacturer documentation says otherwise.
- Never touch the nozzle or assume that an apparently idle pen is cool.
- Use only materials supported by the specific model and the correct temperature range.
- Provide appropriate ventilation, especially when using ABS or another material with relevant fumes or warnings. Create+ documentation specifically calls out ventilation for styrene-containing materials.
- Keep unsuitable materials away from the pen. Heating an unapproved plastic can create both equipment and inhalation hazards.
- Supervise teenagers until they can manage heat, feeding, and cleanup safely.
Useful accessories and refills
The right add-ons depend entirely on the pen:
- Start+: compatible Start+ Eco-Filament and the model’s approved accessories. Do not substitute ordinary filament without checking the warranty and compatibility guidance.
- Flow: compatible 1.75 mm PLA or ABS, a maintenance tool, and additional stencil or project materials. The starter set already lists a maintenance tool and stencil sheet.
- MYNT3D PRO: compatible thermoplastic filament and a model-specific replacement nozzle. The pen’s temperature range does not make every specialty filament suitable.
- SCRIB3D P1: PLA or ABS identified for the P1, plus stencil or project material if the included guide is not enough.
- Create+: Create+ 2.85 mm filament and Create+-compatible nozzles or accessories.
A 3D pen stencil book can be a worthwhile addition for children and beginners because it turns the pen into a guided activity rather than asking the user to invent every project from scratch. Check that the stencil dimensions and project instructions suit the chosen model.

Which pen should you buy?
- Buying for a six-year-old or younger child who meets the manufacturer’s age guidance? Choose the 3Doodler Start+ and budget for its dedicated Eco-Filament.
- Buying for a teen or adult who wants ordinary spooled filament? Choose the 3Doodler Flow, provided the user is ready for an exposed hot nozzle.
- Want the most adjustment and specialty-material flexibility? Choose the MYNT3D 3D Pen PRO, after confirming current availability and the material requirements.
- Want a lower-cost adult or teen option with a display? Consider the SCRIB3D P1, without assuming that its lower price predicts poorer or better long-term reliability.
- Already own Create+ filament or accessories? Create+ can remain practical, but it is not the best universal recommendation for a new buyer.
Final recommendation
For kids, buy the 3Doodler Start+. It has the strongest documented fit for younger users: low-temperature operation, no hot external parts, dedicated child-oriented filament, and guided educational support.
For most adults and older teens, buy the 3Doodler Flow because standard 1.75 mm spooled filament and adjustable controls make it the easiest all-around starting point. Choose the MYNT3D 3D Pen PRO instead when one-degree temperature control, adjustable feed, specialty thermoplastics, and a replaceable nozzle justify a more feature-focused tool. Choose the SCRIB3D P1 when price and beginner accessories matter most. Choose Create+ mainly when you are already invested in its 2.85 mm ecosystem.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best 3D pen for a child?
The 3Doodler Start+ is the best fit for children ages 6 and up in this comparison. It is designed around low-temperature operation with no hot external parts and includes access to guided projects and stencils. Adult supervision is still recommended.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchCan the 3Doodler Start+ use regular PLA filament?
No. The Start+ uses dedicated Start+ Eco-Filament and is identified by 3Doodler as compatible with the Start+ refill and accessory ecosystem. Standard 1.75 mm or 2.85 mm filament should not be treated as interchangeable, and third-party filament may affect the active warranty.
Which 3D pen is best for adults?
The 3Doodler Flow is the better general-purpose choice for most adults and older teens because it uses industry-standard 1.75 mm spooled filament, supports PLA and ABS, and includes an LCD with adjustable temperature. The MYNT3D PRO is better if precise temperature adjustment and specialty-material experimentation are priorities.
What filament size do 3D pens use?
A 3Doodler Create+ uses 2.85 mm Create+ filament, while the Flow uses 1.75 mm spooled filament. The Start+ uses dedicated Eco-Filament. Diameter and temperature requirements both matter, so filament should be matched to the exact pen model.
Is the 3Doodler Create+ safe for children?
The Create+ is a hot-tool design with exposed hot parts. Manufacturer documentation identifies it as adult use only, while an education page describes it as suitable for ages 13 and older. Because of the heat exposure, it should not be treated as a young child’s pen; follow the strictest current safety guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDo 3D pens need ventilation?
Yes, but only when the filament is compatible with the specific pen and its temperature range. Use ventilation and follow the manufacturer’s material warnings, especially with ABS and other materials that may produce irritating fumes. Never assume that a standard diameter makes every filament safe or suitable.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The 3Doodler Start+ is the best documented choice for children ages 6 and up. The 3Doodler Flow is the best general recommendation for older teens and adults, while the MYNT3D PRO is better for users who need detailed temperature and feed control. Treat every hot-nozzle model as an adult or older-teen tool, and confirm filament compatibility before buying refills.
