The Canon SELPHY CP1500 is the best all-around choice for most people who need real 4×6-inch prints at home or on the go. It combines dye-sublimation printing with Wi-Fi, phone and computer support, memory-card printing and an optional battery. The key caveat: many printers marketed as “instant” or “portable” make wallet-size or square pictures, not standard 4×6 prints.
This guide focuses on printers that actually support 4×6 output. It compares the CP1500 with the more flexible, but older and harder-to-find, Epson PictureMate PM-400, then explains when a mini printer or a full-size photo inkjet is a better fit.

The CP1500 is the clearest recommendation if your priority is convenient, standard-size 4×6 prints. Its dye-sublimation thermal-transfer system lays down colour in successive passes and applies a protective overcoat. Canon lists glossy, semi-gloss and satin finishes, and the printer supports postcard-size 4×6 output as well as smaller formats. The matching postcard cassette is included; other media sizes may require a different cassette.

Its flexibility makes it useful for more than phone snapshots. Print over Wi-Fi, use Apple AirPrint, connect by USB, or print from an SD, SDHC or SDXC card. Canon’s SELPHY and PRINT apps support phone workflows, while the colour LCD lets you preview and adjust images at the printer. Check Canon’s current app and operating-system compatibility information before purchase, particularly if you depend on a specific phone or computer version.
At roughly 7.2 × 5.2 × 2.3 inches and about 1.9 pounds, the CP1500 is compact enough to move between rooms or pack for a trip. But it is not battery-powered out of the box: Canon’s NB-CP2LH battery is an optional accessory, rated for up to 54 prints per charge. Allow space for the paper cassette and the paper’s travel through the printer, and account for the power adapter if you are packing it.
Canon advertises print life of up to 100 years under specified accelerated-test and album-storage conditions. That is a manufacturer claim, not a guarantee for every print: light, heat, humidity, air quality, paper and storage all affect longevity. Store keepsake prints in suitable albums rather than treating a lab-tested figure as a promise of real-world life.

Choose it if: you want true 4×6 prints, mostly print photos rather than documents, and value several ways to send images to the printer. Look elsewhere if: you need larger formats, broad paper choice, extensive colour-management control, or a printer for everyday documents as well as photos. The CP1500 also uses dedicated paper-and-ribbon media, so compare replacement-pack costs before committing.
Best inkjet alternative: Epson PictureMate PM-400
The PM-400 is worth considering if 5×7 prints matter as much as 4×6, or if you prefer an inkjet’s broader paper flexibility. It uses four-colour dye ink, has a 2.7-inch display, supports memory-card printing and offers Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, USB and Epson iPrint. Epson advertises 4×6 prints in as little as 36 seconds; actual time depends on settings and conditions.
Epson lists a maximum resolution of 5,760 × 1,440 dpi and a minimum droplet size of two picolitres. Those figures should not be compared directly with a dye-sub printer’s resolution: the two technologies form images differently, and resolution alone does not establish which print will look better. Epson also claims up to 200 years of album storage for PM-400 prints and describes them as smudge-, scratch-, water- and fade-resistant. These are manufacturer claims under stated conditions, not a guarantee of how a print will fare in every environment.

There are practical reasons not to make it the default pick. The PM-400 dates to 2015, weighs about four pounds and has an operating depth of roughly 15.1 inches. It is compact compared with a desktop photo printer, but not pocket-portable. As an inkjet, it also depends on cartridges; after long periods unused, inkjet maintenance or cleaning may be needed. Epson says its Print Pack includes a replacement cartridge and 100 sheets of 4×6 paper, but calculate the cost per usable print using the price available where you live.

Most importantly, availability is uncertain. Epson’s US product page showed the PM-400 as out of stock in the research snapshot, despite listing a $299.99 price. Treat it as a conditional alternative: check current printer stock, replacement ink and media, warranty, and support for your exact operating system before buying. Epson lists a Windows 11 driver package, but legacy operating-system references elsewhere on its product information make checking your own setup especially worthwhile.
Do you really need 4×6?
Four by six inches is about 102 × 152 mm, a common postcard-size print. It is not interchangeable with a 2×3-inch wallet photo, a roughly 2.1×3.4-inch card print or a square sticker. A printer can be portable and produce attractive instant photos while still failing the basic 4×6 requirement.

The Canon SELPHY QX20 is an example: it is designed for smaller card or square sticker-style prints, not standard 4×6 photos. It makes sense for scrapbook decorations, small keepsakes or compact party favours, but not for filling a conventional 4×6 album. The same size check applies to Instax, HP Sprocket, Canon IVY and other mini printers.
Kodak Dock Plus 4PASS and HP Sprocket Studio Plus are also named in comparison coverage as 4×6 candidates. Before treating either as a current alternative, confirm on the manufacturer’s own information that the model is available in your region, its app still supports your devices, and replacement media is sold at a price and yield you can live with. Without that confirmation, the CP1500 is the better-supported recommendation here.

Neither technology wins every image-quality question by definition. Look at detail, skin tones, shadow and highlight detail, grayscale neutrality, colour consistency, surface finish and crop accuracy. Also consider how the phone app processes a picture. A higher advertised dpi for inkjet and a different dpi figure for dye-sub describe unlike systems; they are not a direct quality ranking.

Work out the cost per print
Printer price is only the starting point. For a useful comparison, calculate:
Cost per print = (price of the compatible media pack ÷ number of prints in the pack) + an allowance for wasted prints.
Check whether a pack includes both paper and the required ribbon or ink, how many usable sheets it contains, and whether the printer ships with a starter supply. Add shipping and allow for misfeeds, test prints and images you reprint after adjusting a crop. A low printer price can be offset by several expensive media packs.

Epson says the PM-400 Print Pack includes a replacement cartridge and 100 sheets of 4×6 paper. For the CP1500, use the current price and print yield for the exact compatible postcard paper-and-ribbon pack. The available research does not establish a sufficiently reliable current US price for that consumable, so no per-print figure is quoted here. Prices and pack contents change, and third-party media may not be supported or deliver predictable results.
What to check before you buy
- Confirm the actual size. Look for explicit 4×6 or postcard-format support, not just “instant,” “portable” or “photo printer.”
- Preview the crop. Many camera images use a 3:2 ratio that fits 4×6 well. Phones often capture in 4:3 or 16:9, so a full-bleed borderless print may crop part of the image. Add a white border or adjust the crop if keeping the entire frame matters.
- Check how you can print. Wi-Fi can be convenient, but see whether you can also print by USB or memory card. Wi-Fi Direct or a direct wireless mode can help when there is no home router, but setup varies by printer and app.
- Verify phone and computer support. Hardware can outlast an app’s compatibility. Check current iOS, Android, Windows and macOS support for the exact model before relying on phone-only printing.
- Understand the power setup. Confirm whether a battery is included or optional, and count the adapter, tray and operating space when judging portability.
- Check the consumables before the printer. Confirm compatible media availability, pack yield and price in your region. Proprietary paper or ribbon can determine the real long-term cost.
- Store prints sensibly. Manufacturer longevity figures depend on test and storage conditions. Keep valued prints away from prolonged direct light, heat and damp.
When a different kind of printer makes more sense
Choose a mini printer if you mainly want stickers, wallet-size pictures or small scrapbook embellishments. Its compact size may be more useful than a larger 4×6 output you rarely need.
Choose a full-size photo inkjet if you need letter-size, A3/A3+ or fine-art prints, more paper options, colour-management or ICC-profile control, large batches, or one machine for documents and photographs. A dedicated instant printer prioritizes convenience and compact output; it is not a replacement for a versatile desktop photo printer.
