Leonardo.Ai is the best all-around choice for creating recurring visual characters because it combines reference-image workflows, consistency tools, editing, custom models, and scene generation. Midjourney is the stronger pick for polished artistic concepts, Adobe Firefly for Adobe-centered commercial design workflows, and Stable Diffusion-based tools for maximum technical control.
“AI character generator” can mean several different products. This guide focuses mainly on 2D image generators, then separates avatar, 3D, and conversational-character tools so you can choose the right category.

Character-reference generation

Best for artistic concept art: Midjourney
Midjourney is the strongest fit when visual impact, mood and art direction matter more than a tightly managed production pipeline. Its official Character Reference feature uses an image to carry traits such as hair, clothing and facial features into new scenes.
Best uses
- Fantasy and cinematic portraits
- Editorial illustration and mood boards
- Rapid exploration of many art directions
Character Reference makes recurring work more practical than text-only prompting, but attractive images can still drift in facial structure, costume details or extreme viewpoints. Treat it as an art-direction tool, not a guarantee of model-locked identity.
Best for Adobe and commercial design workflows: Adobe Firefly
Firefly is particularly useful when the character must become an advertisement, presentation, social post or Photoshop composite. Adobe describes image generation, Generative Fill and Generative Expand in its feature overview.

Adobe’s Firefly FAQ states that, for features without a beta label, generated outputs may be used in commercial projects subject to applicable terms and other intellectual-property obligations. That is useful risk guidance, not a guarantee of copyright, uniqueness or clearance of every trademark, likeness or uploaded input.

“Stable Diffusion” is an ecosystem rather than one consumer product. Depending on the host, you may use local interfaces, hosted generation, checkpoints, LoRAs, ControlNet, inpainting, outpainting and pose or depth guidance.

Why beginners often should not start here

Canva’s AI image generator is a practical choice for avatars, mascots and quick marketing graphics, especially when the finished asset will be laid out in a social post, presentation or thumbnail. Image generators versus chatbot characters
If you want people to talk with a fictional persona rather than download artwork, use a conversational platform such as Character.AI. Evaluate those products by dialogue quality, memory, persona controls, moderation and user experience. They should not be ranked alongside image generators for anatomy, rendering or visual continuity.
Why one excellent portrait does not prove consistency
Generators commonly struggle when asked to preserve the same character in a side view, from behind, at a different age, in a full-body pose, with another character, or while holding a specific object. Accessories, footwear, hands, logos and color patterns are especially vulnerable to drift. Sequential comics add panel-to-panel identity, costume continuity, left/right orientation, speech-bubble space and scene geography.
Workflow for a consistent character
- Write a brief: record age range, species, body type, face, hair, clothing materials, palette, personality, setting, style and signature details.
- Create an anchor image: use one visible character, a simple pose, clear face, uncluttered background and consistent lighting.
- Choose carefully: reject images with distorted hands, extra limbs, ambiguous clothing or unclear accessories.
- Vary one thing: change pose, location, expression or outfit separately rather than changing identity and style at once.
- Use reference controls: upload the anchor where supported and combine it with a concise description of fixed traits.
- Edit locally: use inpainting for hands, facial details, props and clothing instead of regenerating a successful image wholesale.
- Build a sheet: include front, three-quarter and side views, full body, expressions, costume details, colors and props.
- Archive the workflow: keep the prompt, reference, model, date and plan terms so later revisions are traceable.
Prompt template
Original character, [age range], [species or identity], [distinctive facial features], [hair], [body type], wearing [specific clothing and materials], signature prop: [prop], color palette: [colors], personality: [traits], [pose and expression], [environment], [lighting], [art style], clean silhouette, clear hands, single character, full-body character design sheet.
When the result drifts
- Return to the original anchor image.
- Remove unnecessary adjectives and repeat only fixed traits.
- Generate a three-quarter portrait before a complex action pose.
- Change one variable at a time.
- Try a custom model or LoRA when ordinary reference conditioning is insufficient.
- Manually retouch critical details and do not assume a new model version will preserve an older workflow.
Commercial-use, privacy and safety checklist
- Read the plan and feature terms for your country, model and subscription tier.
- Check whether free or default generations are public. Leonardo’s current pricing page identifies free creations as public.
- Confirm how uploaded references, prompts and outputs are retained or used.
- Distinguish a vendor’s commercial-use license from ownership, exclusivity and copyright protection.
- Check whether a feature is beta or uses a partner model with separate rules.
- Use only references you have permission to upload, including client material and photographs.
- Avoid reproducing a real person’s likeness, a child’s image, a living artist’s work or a copyrighted character without appropriate rights.
- Inspect logos, lettering, trademarks, accidental likenesses and similarities to protected characters before publication.
Which generator should you choose?
