1. ChatGPT / OpenAI 4o Image Generation: best for conversational creation and revisions
OpenAI introduced native 4o image generation in March 2025. Its documentation described image input and transformation, detailed instruction following, and rendering of text and instructional diagrams. That made it a particularly practical option when the image was only the first step in a conversation.
For example, a painter could upload a rough charcoal thumbnail and ask for a warmer dusk palette, a simplified three-value composition, a clearer separation between subject and background, or a labeled lighting study. The useful part of this workflow is not merely generating another image: it is being able to explain the next change in ordinary language while retaining the context of the prior request.

It was also a sensible choice for work where visual information and words need to coexist—reference sheets, annotated concepts, simple diagrams, mock packaging, or social graphics. Better text rendering does not mean infallible text rendering. Proofread every word, inspect numerals closely, and do not treat generated branding, instructions, or labels as final without human review.
Choose it if: your process includes back-and-forth direction, an uploaded sketch or reference, compositional adjustment, or image-plus-copy work.
Do not assume: that current ChatGPT image features, limits, or plans are evidence of what was available in 2025; nor that any model will always reproduce exact text or provide a definitive photorealism advantage.
2. Midjourney V7: best for visual exploration and art direction
Midjourney’s V7 timeline is clear: the V7 Alpha arrived on April 4, 2025, and V7 became the default model on June 17. Those milestones establish its relevance to a 2025 comparison, but they are not proof of a universal quality win.
Its strongest case was a workflow led by visual exploration. If you begin with atmosphere, shape language, framing, material cues, lighting, and repeated prompt variations—rather than a need to edit an existing asset precisely—Midjourney belonged high on the shortlist. It can be useful for discovering a direction for a painting series: restrained gouache architecture, storm-lit coastal studies, theatrical still lifes, or a dozen competing thumbnail compositions.
The important discipline is to keep the tool in its appropriate role. Treat generated work as visual research, a mood-board contributor, or a starting point for your own drawing and paint decisions. Before committing to a subscription or client workflow, check the then-current model selector, privacy options, plan limits, and terms governing your intended use.
Choose it if: your early-stage process is highly visual and benefits from many art-directed alternatives.

Adobe made Firefly Image Model 4 and Image Model 4 Ultra generally available on April 24, 2025. At launch, Adobe described Image Model 4 as its fastest, most controllable, and most realistic Firefly model, with outputs up to 2K and added structural, style, camera-angle, and zoom controls. Adobe positioned Ultra for complex scenes and fine detail. Those are Adobe’s launch descriptions, not independent comparative test results.
For a working artist or studio already moving between Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and client review, ecosystem fit can matter more than a marginal difference in a single generated image. Firefly’s appeal was the ability to make generative work part of an existing Adobe-centered production path instead of adding another isolated tool.
Adobe also provided unusually clear material in this comparison about commercial workflow. Adobe stated that Firefly outputs may be used in commercial projects unless a particular product says otherwise. It also warns that output may not be unique, and says Content Credentials are applied to downloaded or exported Firefly-generated work, or projects containing such an asset. That is useful provenance infrastructure; it is not a guarantee of copyright ownership, exclusivity, legal clearance, or a unique result.
Choose it if: your files, team, and handoff already live in Creative Cloud, and Adobe’s stated commercial-use policy and Content Credentials workflow are meaningful to the project.

4. Google Imagen 4: best for Gemini and Google developer ecosystems
Google announced Imagen 4 at I/O on May 20, 2025, highlighting image quality, faster generation, and improved text rendering. In June 2025, Google announced paid-preview access through the Gemini API along with limited free testing in Google AI Studio. That made Imagen 4 a compelling option for people already using Gemini and teams building image features through Google’s developer stack.
The practical advantage here was ecosystem alignment. A team already using Google’s tools could assess Imagen 4 alongside its existing prompt, evaluation, authentication, and application workflow instead of treating image generation as a disconnected creative experiment.
For an illustrator or painter, Imagen 4 was worth testing when clean lettering in an early concept mattered—for example, a book-cover mockup, exhibition poster, label, or editorial social asset. But “improved text rendering” is not a substitute for checking spelling, kerning, brand treatment, accessibility, or production specifications.

Choose it if: Gemini, Google AI Studio, or the Gemini API is already part of your workflow and text-forward images are important.
Avoid fixed price claims: preview access, free testing, quotas, regions, and API prices are all details that can change quickly.
5. Ideogram 3.0: best for typography-led visual concepts
Ideogram announced version 3.0 on March 26, 2025 and emphasized stronger image-prompt alignment, photorealism, and text rendering; its documentation also recorded a May 1, 2025 release iteration. That makes Ideogram a natural specialist choice for visual work in which the words are part of the composition rather than an afterthought.
Think posters, event graphics, cover concepts, packaging sketches, social announcements, menu ideas, and logo exploration. A painter planning a show, for instance, could use it to explore how a title, date block, image crop, and color field sit together before rebuilding the selected design properly in a design application.
“Logo exploration” deserves a careful qualifier. Use generated outputs to explore composition and direction, not as automatic final brand assets. Check every letter, research any confusingly similar mark, and obtain professional rights advice where a mark will identify a business or product.
Choose it if: type, headline hierarchy, and graphic composition are central to the concept.
Do not assume: error-free spelling, exact brand accuracy, or automatic commercial clearance.
6. FLUX.1 Kontext: best for image-context editing
Black Forest Labs presented FLUX.1 Kontext as a unified text-to-image and context-aware image-editing family that accepts both text and image input. This is a different proposition from simply generating a new picture from a prompt. It is for a workflow that begins with an existing image—your sketch, reference photograph, earlier output, or composition—and asks for controlled, iterative changes in relation to it.
That can be useful for a painter wanting to explore alternatives without discarding a composition: change the season while preserving the pose; test a different backdrop around an existing object; alter palette and atmosphere while keeping the arrangement; or generate variation studies from a supplied reference.

Licensing is the crucial caveat. Do not collapse every FLUX offering into “open source” or “free for commercial use.” Black Forest Labs documents Kontext [dev] as non-commercial, with commercial use available through licensing. Check the exact model variant, the platform hosting it, and the license that applies to the way you will use it.
Choose it if: you need image-plus-text context and iterative edits, especially in a developer-oriented workflow.
Stop and verify first if: the result will be used commercially, because the model name alone does not tell you the applicable rights.

Start with the type of input you have
If you have only an idea, any of the six can begin from text. If you have a composition sketch, reference image, or previous output that must remain recognizable, prioritize a workflow documented to accept image input and edits. In this group, ChatGPT’s uploaded-image transformation workflow and FLUX.1 Kontext’s image-plus-text approach are especially relevant. Do not infer equally capable editing from the fact that another product can generate images.
Decide whether words inside the image matter
For posters, product concepts, diagrams, and social assets, test the actual words, punctuation, dates, and long strings you need. ChatGPT/4o, Imagen 4, and Ideogram all had documented 2025 positioning around text rendering. Run a small, repeatable test with your own copy; then proofread the result like any other draft.
Separate art direction from production integration
Midjourney is the obvious shortlist candidate when the work is visual exploration and direction finding. Firefly is the more natural candidate when the work must live inside an Adobe-centered production path. Test with one real brief, not a generic prompt

- Use the same brief in each candidate tool, but adapt the syntax only where the tool requires it.

- Judge the whole workflow: prompt control, speed, revision quality, output handling, terms, and whether you can recreate the result later.
- Keep records of inputs and outputs for commissioned or commercial work.
Price is a moving target, not a winner category
A “best cheap generator” table becomes stale quickly because subscriptions, monthly credits, API billing, trial access, regions, and model routing change. More importantly, the apparent price can hide the real cost: rerolls, higher-resolution exports, API usage, editing time, storage, or a second tool needed to finish typography. Compare the current official plan pages only after you have identified the workflow that actually suits you.

Commercial use, provenance, and the limits of a checkbox
Generated images can raise questions that are bigger than a platform’s marketing label: rights in your source material, client contracts, trademarks, recognizable people, protected characters, confidentiality, model-specific restrictions, and territorial law. A provider’s commercial-use policy is useful, but it is not a universal legal warranty.
Firefly is the clearest example in this 2025 set of why nuanced wording matters. Adobe stated that Firefly outputs can be used commercially unless otherwise specified, while also saying output may not be unique; its Content Credentials workflow can communicate provenance on export. None of that makes a result exclusive, automatically copyrightable, or safe for every use. Other platforms have their own terms, which must be checked separately.

For client work, keep the original brief, prompts, source assets, model and plan used, dates, and material edits. Avoid uploading confidential client material until the service’s current data and privacy terms have been reviewed. Where a brand, product claim, regulated subject, or recognisable person is involved, route the final output through the same approval process you would use for conventional photography or illustration.
A practical note for painters
AI image generators are most useful as a sketchbook adjunct when they help you make better decisions—not when they replace them. Use them to test value structures, crop ideas, lighting scenarios, palette families, setting references, or a sequence of compositional thumbnails. Then redraw, restage, photograph, paint, and edit with your own eye.
