You do not need a subscription to edit photos on a Mac. Apple Photos is the best starting point for everyday corrections, GIMP is the strongest free choice for layers and composites, darktable and RawTherapee suit RAW photography, Krita is better for brush-led creative work, and Photopea provides a browser-based PSD-style editor.
There is no evidence-based universal winner here because these apps solve different problems. Choose according to the work you need to do—not a generic “best” ranking.

1. Apple Photos: best for everyday photo fixes
If you already have a Mac and mostly need to crop, straighten, brighten, correct colour, remove a small blemish, or sharpen an image, start with Apple Photos. It is the least complicated option because it is built into macOS and requires no separate download.
Photos includes more than basic cropping and filters. Apple documents controls for light and exposure, colour, white balance, red-eye, selective colour, levels, curves, retouching, and sharpening. That is enough for many family photos, social-media images, scans, and quick painting-reference adjustments.

GIMP is the most natural choice when “photo editing” means substantial image manipulation rather than a few sliders. It is free software for macOS and supports the kind of layered work needed for composites, restorations, complex retouching, and graphic layouts.
Its layer system supports layers and layer groups, opacity and visibility controls, masks, duplication, and merging. Those features let you keep parts of an image separate—for example, putting a painted correction on its own layer, masking an adjustment to a particular area, or combining several photographs into one composition.
GIMP is also positioned by its project for retouching, restoration, colour-managed work, customisation, and plug-ins. That makes it the broadest general-purpose option in this list for readers who want to manipulate pixels in many different ways.
Choose GIMP if you need:

3. darktable: best for a photo library plus RAW workflow
darktable is designed around photography rather than isolated one-off images. Its project describes it as an open-source photography workflow application with a database-backed virtual lighttable and darkroom. In practical terms, it is intended to help you manage a collection of digital negatives, view them, and develop or enhance RAW images.
That makes darktable a better fit than GIMP if you regularly import, organise, select, and develop large numbers of photographs. It is especially relevant to photographers who want a catalogue-like workflow alongside non-destructive RAW adjustments.
Choose darktable if you need:
- A virtual lighttable for browsing and organising photographs.
- A database-backed workflow for a growing image collection.

That focus makes it worth considering when your priority is extracting and refining detail from camera RAW files. It is less suitable if your main task is arranging several images into a poster, painting over a photograph, or maintaining a broad photo catalogue.
Choose RawTherapee if you need:
- A dedicated RAW-development application.
- Fine control over camera-original files.
- Free software rather than a subscription service.
- A workflow centred on developing photographs instead of compositing them.
Check the Mac requirements carefully
The documented RawTherapee 5.12 Mac build has an unusual split in requirements:
- Apple silicon: macOS 15.4 or later.
- Intel: macOS 12.3 Monterey or later.
The project also says the application must remain installed in /Applications. It may refuse to start if it is moved elsewhere or renamed. This is particularly important if you normally keep downloaded applications in a custom folder.
5. Krita: best for brush- and stylus-led creative editing
Krita is free and open-source, but it is primarily a professional painting program—not a conventional photo catalogue or RAW developer. It becomes a good photo-editing choice when your work involves painting, hand retouching, texture, illustration, or extensive brush-based changes.
Krita supports layers, making it useful for keeping painted corrections separate from the original image. Artists and illustrators may also prefer its brush-oriented environment to a photography-first application when a photo is only the starting point for a painted piece.
Choose Krita if you need:
- Brush-led retouching or paint-over work.
- Creative photo manipulation that becomes illustration or artwork.
- Natural stylus control and pressure-sensitive brush work.
- Layered painting on top of photographs.
For a conservative recommendation, use Krita 5.3.2.1. The project describes that release as suitable for productive work and provides a signed macOS disk image. The newer 6.0.2.1 release is labelled more experimental because of major Qt changes, so it should not be the default recommendation for readers who prioritise a predictable production setup.

Do you need a graphics tablet?
No. A mouse or trackpad is sufficient for basic work, and a tablet is unnecessary for Apple Photos, darktable, or RawTherapee. For hand retouching and painting in Krita, however, a pressure-sensitive graphics tablet for Mac can provide more natural control. Krita’s documentation recommends a pressure-sensitive tablet over a finger-touch stylus when pressure sensitivity matters.
Before buying one, check the manufacturer’s current macOS driver page and confirm compatibility with your Mac’s operating-system version. A tablet is an optional accessory, not a requirement for using Krita or any other editor in this guide.

Photopea is different from the other choices: it is a browser editor, not a native Mac application. Use it when you need to edit without installing software, work on a computer where you lack administrator access, or open a PSD-style project quickly.
Photopea says that it processes files locally in the browser rather than uploading them. It claims support for opening and saving PSD files, layers, masks, smart objects, adjustment layers, channels, paths, and a range of RAW formats. Those features make it a credible browser-based option for layered work and occasional compatibility tasks.

There are two important caveats. First, Photopea is browser software, so it should not be described as an installed Mac app. Second, the free service is primarily funded by advertising; Photopea states that ads may occupy approximately 5%–15% of the screen, and it offers a Premium tier. Do not treat it as an ad-free service.

- Only need quick corrections? Open Apple Photos.
- Need layers, masks, or a composite? Install GIMP.
- Shoot RAW and want a library/lighttable? Try darktable, provided your Mac runs macOS 13.5 or later.
- Want a focused RAW developer? Try RawTherapee, after checking the separate Apple-silicon and Intel requirements.
- Want to paint, draw, or retouch with a brush? Choose Krita.
- Need PSD-style editing without an installation? Use Photopea in a browser and accept its free-tier advertising.
Which free Mac photo editor should you install first?
For most Mac owners, the sensible progression is to start with Apple Photos and move to GIMP only when you encounter a real need for layers or masks. Photographers who shoot RAW should compare darktable and RawTherapee instead of assuming a general-purpose editor is the best tool. Choose Krita when the work is fundamentally painting or brush-based, and choose Photopea when browser access and PSD compatibility matter more than having a native application.
