Short answer: There is no single best AI photo enhancer for every job. For serious photographic enhancement, Topaz Photo is the strongest specialist starting point. Choose Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop for the most complete editing workflow, DxO PhotoLab 9 for RAW noise reduction and natural detail, ON1 Photo RAW 2026 for a broad no-subscription alternative, Upscayl for free local processing, and Magnific when creative, invented detail is acceptable.
For a large print, a cropped photograph, a noisy RAW file, an old family scan, a painting reproduction, or an image containing text, the right choice changes. The most attractive result is not always the most faithful one: AI may redraw eyes, skin, brushstrokes, foliage, fingers, logos, and lettering that were never captured in the original.

Our quick verdict
| Pick | Best for | Main reason to choose it | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Topaz Photo | Serious enhancement and restoration | Denoising, sharpening, face recovery, text preservation, dust and scratch repair, object removal, and upscaling in one specialist app | Current development is subscription-based, and some models depend on hardware or cloud rendering |
| Topaz Gigapixel | Dedicated enlargement | More focused than Topaz Photo, with models for photographs, faces, art, graphics, text, and difficult low-resolution images | It is a specialist upscaler rather than a complete photo editor |
| Lightroom + Photoshop | Complete editing | RAW development, cataloguing, layers, masks, compositing, object removal, generative editing, and upscaling | Subscription required; some generative models consume credits |
| DxO PhotoLab 9 | High-ISO RAW files | DeepPRIME noise reduction, lens corrections, and natural technical image quality | Not a general generative editor or extreme enlargement specialist |
| ON1 Photo RAW 2026.4 / MAX | No-subscription all-in-one editing | RAW editing, layers, masks, effects, management, AI tools, Resize AI, and optional Restore AI | Its interface and RAW processing are not universally as polished as the leading specialist alternatives |
| ON1 Resize AI 2026 | Print production | Print presets, gallery-wrap margins, tiling, batch processing, and enlargement up to 10× | Best suited to photographers who already know the intended physical output |
| Magnific | Creative AI art and illustrations | Generative upscaling that can add attractive texture and detail to artwork | It may invent detail, making it unsuitable for evidence, labels, logos, or faithful restoration |
| Upscayl | Free, private, local enhancement | Free and open-source desktop processing with no per-image limit | A compatible Vulkan GPU is important for practical performance |
| Remini | Mobile portrait and face enhancement | Fast one-tap results for selfies and old family portraits | Cloud processing, advertising, subscriptions, and identity-changing face reconstruction require caution |
| Let’s Enhance Prime | Quick browser-based enhancement | Cloud workflow designed around preserving texture and natural imperfections | Credit-based processing and vendor performance claims should be checked against your own images |
| Luminar Neo | Easy creative editing | Accessible tools for skies, lighting, portraits, object removal, and generative edits | It is easier than a professional suite, but not necessarily the strongest dedicated upscaler or RAW processor |
What an AI photo enhancer actually does
The phrase AI photo enhancer covers several different operations. Treating them as one task is the reason many comparison articles produce unhelpful rankings.

Upscaling
Upscaling increases the pixel dimensions of an image and estimates detail that is missing between the original pixels. It is useful for cropped photographs, small digital-camera files, large prints, catalogue images, scans, and AI-generated artwork.
Upscaling does not recover ground-truth detail that the camera never recorded. A model can produce a convincing edge, eyelash, brick, or brushstroke without that detail being historically or photographically accurate.
Denoising
Denoising reduces luminance and colour noise. It is especially valuable for high-ISO RAW files, night photography, wildlife, sports, indoor photographs, underexposed images, and long exposures. A good denoiser should reduce noise without turning fine texture into wax or smearing feathers, hair, fabric, or paint.
Sharpening and deblurring
Sharpening improves the appearance of existing edges. Deblurring models attempt to reverse softness caused by camera shake, motion, or missed focus. Mild softness can often be improved; severe motion blur, missed focus, heavy JPEG damage, and lost sensor information cannot be reliably reversed.
A deblur model may create plausible texture rather than recover the original texture. Inspect eyes, lettering, fingers, repeating patterns, and straight edges carefully.
Restoration
Restoration tools repair dust, scratches, fading, tears, stains, and degraded faces. They can make an old photograph usable and attractive, but restoration is not the same as historical recovery. Where the source contains no information, the software must make a plausible replacement.
Face enhancement
Face recovery can improve a small portrait, but it can also change facial identity, age, expression, eye shape, skin texture, hairline, or teeth. A generated face should never be treated as proof of what a person truly looked like.
Generative editing
Generative tools add, remove, replace, or expand content. Examples include Photoshop Generative Fill, Luminar GenErase and GenExpand, AI background replacement, sky replacement, and creative upscalers such as Magnific. These are editing tools, not merely quality-enhancement tools, because they change image content.
How we separate the tools
The recommendations below are based on the questions that matter in practice:
- Fidelity: Does the result preserve the subject, face, geometry, colour, texture, lettering, and edges?
- Reconstruction versus invention: Does the model remain conservative, generate new texture, or give you a choice?
- Source support: Can the workflow handle RAW, DNG, JPEG, TIFF, PNG, HEIC, PSD, layered files, scans, or screenshots? Support varies by application and workflow, so confirm the current format list before buying.
- Editing breadth: Does it offer RAW development, cataloguing, layers, masks, object removal, generative fill, colour correction, batch work, printing, and plug-ins?
- Processing location: Can the image remain on your computer, or must it be uploaded for a particular model?
- Total cost: Consider subscriptions, perpetual licences, cloud credits, watermarks, export limits, storage, and paid major upgrades.
- Hardware: Generative models may need substantial VRAM, RAM, disk space, and temporary storage.
- Output: Print users need more than a large pixel count. They may need target dimensions, PPI planning, tiling, gallery-wrap margins, batch export, and print-friendly TIFF output.
1. Topaz Photo: best overall specialist
Choose it if: You want one specialist application for difficult photographs: noise, softness, faces, scratches, text, lighting, colour, object removal, and enlargement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTopaz Photo is the current application for ongoing development rather than the older Photo AI workflow. Its documented enhancement set includes RAW Denoise, Denoise, Dust & Scratch, Super Focus, Remove Object, Sharpen, Adjust Lighting, Balance Color, Recover Faces, Preserve Text, Upscale and Resize, Wonder, and Healing Brush. Its release documentation lists 2026 updates including Wonder 3, Denoise Max, Super Focus v3, Recover Faces v3, noise-aware sharpening, and High Fidelity v3. See the current Topaz Photo enhancement documentation and release summary.
Topaz Photo earns the specialist recommendation because it addresses multiple photographic defects instead of only making an image larger. It also offers batch workflows and local processing for supported models, while some models can use cloud rendering.
A sensible Topaz workflow
Topaz documents this general order:
- Apply RAW Denoise when the source is RAW.
- Use Dust and Scratch for physical scan damage.
- Use Super Focus only when the problem is missed focus.
- Apply ordinary Denoise if noise remains.
- Use Sharpen conservatively.
- Remove unwanted objects only when necessary.
- Adjust lighting and colour.
- Use Recover Faces cautiously on portraits.
- Use Preserve Text for lettering and logos rather than a creative recovery model.
- Upscale near the end.
Do not turn on every enhancement. Topaz specifically warns that applying a model to the wrong defect can introduce artefacts. Its workflow guidance is more useful than an automatic preset treated as a final authority.
Where Topaz Photo needs caution
- It is no longer best described as a simple perpetual purchase for current development. Current plans are subscription-based.
- Model availability depends on operating system, hardware, licence level, and local or cloud mode.
- Diffusion-based recovery may change texture or identity. Topaz says its Recover model is not ideal for images dominated by text or logos, and higher creativity can introduce artefacts. Read the Recover documentation.
- It is not a replacement for Photoshop when you need complex layers, compositing, or advanced masking.
- Topaz’s Wonder guidance lists 8GB of VRAM for local Wonder v2/v3 on Windows, or Apple Silicon with at least 16GB of RAM on Mac; some models remain cloud-only on particular platforms. Check the current model requirements.
The Topaz pricing page currently displays several personal, professional, monthly, annual, annual-commitment, and suite routes. Visible US-facing cards include Topaz Photo at $39 per month on one route. Quote the exact checkout plan and billing terms rather than presenting that figure as a universal price.
One additional 2026 qualification matters: Adobe announced an agreement to acquire Topaz Labs on June 25, 2026. That announcement describes an agreement to acquire, not proof that the transaction has closed. See Adobe’s announcement before making any ownership or future-integration claim.
2. Topaz Gigapixel: best dedicated upscaler
Choose it if: You already have an editor and want a focused tool for large enlargements, severe crops, large-format prints, or batch upscaling.
Gigapixel offers core, generative, and legacy models for photographs, low-resolution images, text and shapes, art, graphics, faces, and recovery. That focus makes it a more direct purchase than Topaz Photo when enlargement is the main requirement. The documented AI model list explains the intended uses.

- Dock Photo Printer: The KODAK Dock Plus is a home photo printer that produces high-quality 4x6” prints directly from compatible smartphones. Featuring an integrated docking station, users can place their phone on the printer for better connection while simultaneously charging the device during printing.
- Genuine 4PASS dye sublimation printing: Each photo is produced in three color layers and finished with a clear protective lamination layer. In approximately 55 seconds, you receive a smooth, detailed print designed to resist fingerprints, water, and fading for long-lasting quality.
- Easy to Use: Print photos quickly without complicated setup or technical steps. Simply power on, connect wireless bluetooth, and start printing within seconds. The Dock Plus is built for straightforward operation, making it ideal for first time users and everyday photo printing.
- Home Printing Station: Designed for stable desktop use, this dock photo printer connects to a power outlet for consistent performance and larger 4x6” prints. Ideal for home printing, photo albums, framing, family events, and everyday picture printing.
- KODAK Photo Printer APP: Featuring integrated Bluetooth connectivity, this portable printer connects to compatible iOS and Android devices through the KODAK Photo Printer app. Edit, crop, and customize your photos before printing for creative results.
Use conservative or text-oriented models for labels, signs, screenshots, packaging, and logos. Use creative or generative models for artwork when visual richness matters more than literal reconstruction. Even then, inspect lettering and repeated patterns manually.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchGigapixel is less useful than Topaz Photo for a complete denoise-to-restoration workflow. Its current pricing has also changed from the old perpetual-license descriptions still found in older articles. One visible personal monthly route lists $29 per month, but billing routes, grandfathered licences, and promotions vary; check the live pricing page. The system requirements list 16GB RAM as a minimum, 24GB or more for large upscales, 8GB of VRAM recommended for generative models, and substantial storage for model and temporary files. Outputs of 256 megapixels or more count as very large upscales.
3. Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop: best complete editing workflow
Choose them if: You need RAW development, organisation, masks, layers, compositing, object removal, generative fill, colour correction, and enlargement in one established ecosystem.
Lightroom Classic Super Resolution
In Lightroom Classic:
- Open the image.
- Open the Detail panel.
- Select Super Resolution.
- Let Lightroom create the enhanced DNG.
Super Resolution doubles the width and height, producing four times the total pixel count. It supports RAW, JPEG, and TIFF files, with documented limits of 128 megapixels or 32,500 pixels on either dimension. Lightroom Classic’s workflow can enhance an image only once through that particular process. Read Adobe’s Super Resolution documentation.
Lightroom Generative Upscale
In the newer Lightroom workflow:
- Open the photograph in Detail view.
- Select Photo > Generative Upscale.
- Choose 2x or 4x.
- Optionally select Create Stack.
- Select Upscale.
Lightroom creates a separate DNG. Adobe recommends denoising before Generative Upscale and using the upscale as the final Lightroom step. The current documentation lists Topaz Gigapixel usage at 10 credits for output up to 25 megapixels and 20 credits above 25 megapixels, although credit rules and model availability can change. See Adobe’s Lightroom Generative Upscale guide and FAQ.
Recommended Free Tools
Photoshop Generative Upscale
In Photoshop, select Image > Generative Upscale, choose 2× or 4×, select a model, and choose Upscale. Adobe documents three model categories:
- Firefly Upscaler: intended for standard restoration.
- Topaz Gigapixel: intended to preserve existing detail more closely.
- Topaz Bloom: intended for more creative detail generation.
Model-specific megapixel limits and credit costs differ. Consult the current Photoshop Generative Upscale documentation rather than assuming every model is unlimited.
Adobe’s strengths and weaknesses
Adobe is the best choice when enhancement is only one stage of a larger job. Lightroom handles RAW development and organisation; Photoshop adds layers, masks, compositing, background work, object replacement, and generative fill. Supported Adobe workflows can also attach Content Credentials recording creator, editing, and generative-AI information.
The disadvantages are subscription cost and credit limits. Lightroom Classic also does not currently receive the same Lightroom desktop Topaz Gigapixel integration; Adobe says its current Lightroom Classic focus differs. The US-facing Photography 20GB plan is listed at $14.99 per month on an annual contract billed monthly, or $119.88 per year prepaid, but regional pricing, promotions, storage, and plan availability vary. See Adobe’s Photography plan FAQ.
4. DxO PhotoLab 9: best for RAW noise and natural technical quality
Choose it if: Your main problem is high-ISO noise, difficult RAW files, lens distortion, or loss of fine natural detail.
DxO PhotoLab 9 combines RAW processing, lens modules, AI masks, and DeepPRIME noise reduction. The PhotoLab 9.6 update expanded DeepPRIME XD3 Bayer support to Bayer RAW files and added high-fidelity DNG compression; the release details are discussed in DxO’s update announcement.
DxO is an excellent first step for a noisy wildlife, night, indoor, or underexposed RAW file. It is not the first choice for generative object replacement, creative expansion, or extreme enlargement. It is also more specialised and less immediately approachable than Luminar Neo.
DxO’s current shop lists PhotoLab 9 at $239.99 for a perpetual licence in the US-facing store. Verify taxes, upgrade eligibility, and regional pricing at checkout; the current shop is the authoritative source.

5. ON1 Photo RAW 2026.4 / MAX: best perpetual all-in-one
Choose it if: You want one desktop application with management, RAW editing, layers, masks, effects, enhancement, and a perpetual-license option.
ON1 Photo RAW combines photo management, RAW editing, layers, masks, effects, Resize AI 2026, NoNoise AI, Tack Sharp AI, Brilliance AI, object removal, portrait tools, generative crop and expansion, and resizing. The MAX edition adds plug-in support and Restore AI. ON1 says the 2026.4 update introduced a redesigned Home experience, Restore AI, and performance improvements; see the purchase page and feature page.
This is the strongest alternative for photographers who dislike the Lightroom-plus-Photoshop split and want to avoid an ongoing subscription. Independent reviews praise its breadth, value, effects, browsing, and non-destructive workflow, but note that AI masking is not always reliable, the interface can feel crowded, and DxO has stronger AI noise reduction while Lightroom and Capture One have smoother RAW workflows. See the Digital Camera World review and TechRadar review.
Review references place Photo RAW 2026 around $99 and MAX around $199 at regular pricing, with frequent sales. Treat those as dated reference points, not guaranteed current prices. Confirm the live offer, upgrade terms, and whether a specific AI feature is included before purchase.

6. ON1 Resize AI 2026: best for print production
Choose it if: You are preparing photographs, illustrations, or scanned artwork for a known physical size.
Resize AI supports enlargement up to 10× and includes a Highest Quality diffusion-based model, a faster Standard model, face recovery, print presets, gallery-wrap margins, tiling for murals, and batch processing. It integrates with Photoshop, Lightroom Classic, Capture One, and Apple Photos. Those print-specific features are documented on the ON1 Resize AI page and its feature list.
Resize AI is more than a generic image enlarger because it helps plan the physical output. It is a sensible choice for gallery wraps, murals, canvas, and batches of images destined for a print service. ON1’s claims such as industry standard and without artifacts are marketing claims, not independent benchmark results; test a crop from your own image before committing to a large print.
7. Magnific: best for creative or generative upscaling
Choose it if: You are enlarging AI-generated art, concept art, illustrations, game assets, or other images where additional visual texture is desirable.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Magnific is now presented as a broader creative platform that includes image upscaling, editing, background removal, image extension, relighting, and skin enhancement. Its current site advertises high-resolution enlargement, while older Freepik documentation describes Creative and Precision workflows, imagination or creativity controls, resemblance controls, and different maximum-output descriptions. Because those product surfaces are not perfectly consistent, verify the current limit and plan on the exact service you intend to use: Magnific, Freepik’s documentation, and the Freepik upscaler page.
Magnific can make an illustration look richer and more finished than a conservative model. That is also its central risk. It may invent pores, hair, fabric, foliage, masonry, brush texture, or small objects. Avoid it for product labels, logos, historical evidence, news images, legal records, scientific imagery, or identity-sensitive restoration.
8. Upscayl: best free local option
Choose it if: You need a no-subscription, open-source desktop upscaler and want your images to remain on your own computer.
Upscayl Desktop is free and open source for Linux, macOS, and Windows. The official download page lists version 2.15 and describes local processing, multiple models, custom models, batch use, and no per-image limits. Download it from Upscayl’s official page or inspect the GitHub releases.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The important limitation is hardware. Upscayl relies on a Vulkan-compatible GPU for practical performance. Some CPUs and integrated GPUs may not work or may be extremely slow. If processing fails, update graphics drivers, select the discrete GPU where available, and check the GPU ID in the application logs using the project’s troubleshooting guide.
Upscayl is a strong budget and privacy choice, particularly for local batches and Linux users. It is less polished than premium tools, depends heavily on model choice, and is not a complete editor. Test it carefully before using it for severe face restoration or a professional large-format print.
9. Remini: best mobile face enhancer
Choose it if: You want a fast phone-based improvement to a selfie, portrait, or old family photograph.
Remini focuses on one-tap enhancement for old, blurry, pixelated, and damaged images, with an especially strong emphasis on faces. Its Google Play listing showed more than 500 million downloads, a July 1, 2026 update, advertising, and weekly and yearly subscription options at the time of the research snapshot. Check the current Google Play listing for live terms.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Convenience is the reason to choose Remini, not archival accuracy. Face-oriented processing can make a portrait look clearer while changing the person’s apparent age, expression, eyes, skin, or facial proportions. The Play Store data-safety section says the app may collect photos and videos and may share some data categories with third parties. Review privacy permissions and subscription settings before uploading private family or client photographs.
10. Let’s Enhance Prime: best browser-based faithful enhancer
Choose it if: You want a quick cloud workflow without installing a desktop application or managing a powerful GPU.
Let’s Enhance introduced Prime in January 2026 as its default upscaler. The company describes it as prioritising original texture, skin pores, fabric grain, fine lines, and natural imperfections rather than replacing them. It advertises output up to 16× and 512 megapixels, with usage priced through credits based on output size. These are vendor claims, so validate Prime on your own source material. Read the Prime announcement and current account terms.
Prime is a promising option for product images, portraits, small batches, and users whose computers cannot run demanding local models. It remains a cloud service: consider confidentiality, upload time, credit consumption, output limits, and retention policies before using unpublished work.
11. Luminar Neo: best easy creative editor
Choose it if: You are a beginner or want fast improvements to skies, lighting, portraits, backgrounds, and objects without learning Photoshop.

Luminar Neo includes Enhance AI, Sky AI, relighting tools, object removal, sharpening, denoising, upscaling, restoration, and generative tools such as GenErase, GenSwap, and GenExpand. It also offers plug-in support for Photoshop, Lightroom Classic, and Apple Photos. Its strength is an approachable creative workflow rather than the deepest specialist reconstruction.
Skylum’s current pricing page lists a desktop perpetual licence at $119 and a Max perpetual licence at $179, with a seven-day trial. The same page says generative tools on perpetual plans are included for one year from purchase and that major upgrades may require additional payment. Confirm the current terms at Luminar’s pricing page. Documentation for its Enhance AI tool is available from Skylum support.
Luminar Neo is a good fit for creative portrait and landscape editing, but it should not automatically outrank Topaz for specialist enlargement, DxO for RAW noise, or Adobe for complex compositing.
Faithful upscaling versus creative upscaling
A useful way to choose a model is to decide whether your priority is preservation or appearance.
| Priority | Use | What to inspect |
|---|---|---|
| Faithful preservation | RAW photographs, documentary work, products, documents, scans, paintings being reproduced, and evidence | Text, logos, facial features, geometry, edge halos, repeated patterns, and colour |
| Hybrid reconstruction | Old portraits, damaged photos, moderate crops, and images where some missing detail can be plausibly repaired | Whether face recovery changes identity and whether texture remains consistent with the source |
| Creative generation | AI art, illustrations, concept art, fantasy scenes, and promotional experimentation | Whether invented detail improves the design without introducing distracting anatomy, lettering, or pattern errors |
Common warning signs include waxy skin, fake eyes, altered fingers, rewritten labels, halos around contrasty edges, ringing near lines, over-sharpened noise, repeated foliage, and plastic-looking brushwork. A larger JPEG is not automatically a better or more truthful image.

|---|---|---|---|
| Old, blurry, or damaged photograph | Topaz Photo | Remini for a quick face-focused phone result | Topaz offers separate restoration, denoise, sharpening, face, and upscale tools; Remini is faster but more identity-altering |

How to enhance a photo without making it worse
- Keep the original untouched. Make a working copy, virtual copy, or new version. Preserve the original RAW, scan, or source JPEG.
- Identify the actual defect. Decide whether you have noise, missed focus, motion blur, low resolution, compression, scratches, fading, a damaged face, or a need for creative editing.
- Use the least generative solution. Start with RAW denoise, dust removal, a conservative sharpen, or a text-preserving model before trying diffusion-based recovery.
- Denoise before upscaling when the source is noisy. Enlarging noise gives the model more false detail to interpret. Adobe recommends denoising before Generative Upscale.
- Apply face and text corrections separately. Use masks or local adjustments where possible rather than allowing a face model to rewrite the entire image.
- Upscale near the end. Complete most tonal and colour corrections first, then enlarge for the intended output.
- Inspect at 100 percent and at final size. A defect visible at 400 percent may disappear in a print, while an identity-changing face or wrong logo may look obvious at normal viewing size.
- Compare with the original. Do not judge only whether the new file looks sharper. Check whether it still depicts the same person, object, artwork, and text.
- Export two versions. Keep a high-quality master, such as a suitable TIFF or DNG where the workflow supports it, and create a smaller delivery copy separately.
For text and logos
Use conservative models for packaging, signage, product labels, screenshots, documents, watermarks, and architectural lettering. Topaz explicitly warns that diffusion-based recovery is not ideal for text and logos. If exact wording matters, manually rebuild it or verify it from another source. Never assume that a visually convincing letter is an accurately recovered letter.
For faces
Use low or conservative face-recovery strength. Compare the result side by side with the source, and consider processing the face separately from the background. For family restoration, keep the original beside the enhanced version. For identification, journalism, legal work, or historical records, do not present a generated face as the person’s recovered true appearance.
For scans of paintings
First correct the scan’s colour, perspective, dust, and uneven lighting. Then use conservative enlargement and inspect fine brushwork, canvas weave, signatures, and straight frame edges. A creative upscaler can create attractive new brushstrokes, but that makes it unsuitable when the goal is an accurate reproduction for an archive, catalogue, sale listing, or conservation record.
Planning a large print
Choose the physical output before selecting the enlargement factor. The basic calculation is:
Required pixels = print width × target PPI by print height × target PPI
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11For example, a 12 × 18 inch print at 300 PPI requires 3,600 × 5,400 pixels. Upscaling far beyond the required dimensions does not automatically improve the print; it can increase processing time, file size, and visible artefacts.
ON1 Resize AI is particularly useful when the job includes print presets, gallery-wrap margins, tiling, or batch output. Topaz Gigapixel is the more direct choice when the main concern is reconstructing detail. In either case, inspect a representative crop at the intended print size before ordering an expensive canvas, mural, or gallery print.
Local desktop or cloud browser?
| Prefer local processing when… | Prefer cloud processing when… |
|---|---|
| The photographs are unpublished, confidential, client-owned, journalistic, legal, or personally sensitive | Your computer lacks a capable GPU or enough RAM |
| You have a large archive or repeated batch work | A particular generative model is available only through the cloud |
| Your internet connection is slow or unreliable | You want a browser workflow with no installation |
| You need control over where source files remain | Convenience matters more than local control and upload time |
Local does not mean every feature is local. Topaz supports local and cloud rendering depending on the model, operating system, and hardware; some models may still require cloud processing. Similarly, a desktop editor can include online generative services. Check each model’s current requirements and the provider’s privacy and retention terms rather than judging only from the app’s platform label.
Common failure modes and fixes
The result has waxy skin
Reduce denoise and face-recovery strength, process the face separately, and compare with the original at normal viewing size. If skin texture has been removed, sharpening cannot reliably recreate it.

The eyes or facial features look wrong
Disable or reduce face recovery, try a conservative model, and retain the original face layer if your editor supports layers. A sharper face is not a successful restoration if the person’s identity has changed.
The logo or text is plausible but wrong
Do not increase creativity. Use a text-preserving or conservative model, then manually verify every character. For critical text, reconstruct it in an editor instead of trusting the generated pixels.

Edges have bright halos or ringing
Reduce sharpening, avoid stacking several sharpeners, and inspect against a neutral background. Denoise and upscale only as much as the output requires.
The image looks detailed but artificial
You probably selected a generative model or set creativity too high. Choose a conservative or precision mode for factual work, or accept the result only as a creative interpretation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe application runs out of memory or becomes extremely slow
Reduce output dimensions, process smaller batches, close other GPU-heavy applications, allow additional disk space for model and temporary files, or use a cloud workflow. Topaz Gigapixel’s published requirements specifically distinguish ordinary and very large upscales and recommend more RAM and VRAM for generative work.
Upscayl fails to process the image
Check that the graphics driver is current, confirm that the discrete GPU is selected, and inspect the GPU ID in the logs. A computer without a suitable Vulkan-compatible GPU may be unable to run Upscayl efficiently even though the application itself is free.
A cloud tool consumes credits faster than expected
Check the output megapixel tier before processing a batch. In Adobe, Generative Upscale credit costs vary by model and output size; in Let’s Enhance, usage is credit-based. Test one representative image first and confirm whether retries or alternate versions consume additional credits.
Privacy, provenance, and professional use
Cloud enhancement is convenient, but uploading a client portrait, unpublished painting, family archive, legal record, or documentary photograph may have consequences. Before using a browser or mobile app, check what is collected, whether files are retained, whether uploads may be used to improve services, and how deletion works.

Do not describe invented texture or reconstructed facial detail as recovered fact. If the image is edited, disclose that clearly where the context requires it.
Adobe’s Content Credentials can record creator and editing provenance, including AI use, in supported workflows. They are useful for transparency, but they do not make a generated image factual and should not replace preservation of the original file.
Why simple online rankings can mislead
Many lists place denoisers, mobile beautification apps, restoration tools, full editors, and creative image generators in one ranking. That approach hides the most important distinction: a tool that makes an illustration more dramatic may be a poor choice for a product label or historical photograph.
Vendor comparisons can help identify models and test categories, but they are not neutral proof when a company includes its own products. For example, Topaz publishes a useful 2026 upscaler comparison, but it should be read as a vendor-produced comparison. PetaPixel’s current comparison also contains a sponsorship disclosure involving Aiarty; it may offer workflow context, but its ranking should not be treated as an independent laboratory result. See the comparison and disclosure.
Older pages also commonly repeat obsolete Topaz perpetual pricing, ignore the June 25, 2026 Adobe acquisition agreement, or treat generated detail as recovered detail. Always check the current product page, plan, model, and output limits before purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AI photo enhancer recover detail that was never captured?
No. It can estimate plausible detail between existing pixels, but it cannot establish the original appearance of missing texture, unreadable text, a face, or a damaged object. Generative models may make the result look convincing while inventing information.
Should I use an AI enhancer before or after editing?
For a noisy RAW file, denoise early. Make normal colour and tonal corrections before the final enlargement, then upscale near the end. Adobe recommends denoising before Generative Upscale, and Topaz recommends using only the models that match the actual defect rather than applying every enhancement automatically.
What is the best AI enhancer for an old family photo?
Topaz Photo is the strongest desktop starting point because it combines restoration, denoise, sharpening, face recovery, and upscaling. Remini is more convenient on a phone, but its face-focused processing can alter identity, so retain the original and compare results carefully.
Is a free local tool better for private photographs?
Upscayl keeps processing local and avoids a subscription or per-image fee, making it attractive for privacy-conscious users. It needs a compatible Vulkan GPU for practical performance and may be less capable than premium tools on difficult faces, severe blur, and professional print work.
Which enhancer should I use for a painting or illustration?
Use Topaz Photo or ON1 Resize AI when the goal is a faithful reproduction of brushwork, signatures, canvas texture, or edges. Magnific can be better for creative artwork when invented texture is welcome, but it may repaint details and should not be used for an exact archive or catalogue reproduction.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Start with Topaz Photo for serious photographic enhancement, but choose by the defect rather than by the word AI. Use DxO for noisy RAW files, Adobe for complete editing, ON1 for a perpetual all-in-one workflow, ON1 Resize AI or Gigapixel for large prints, Upscayl for free local processing, and Magnific only when creative invention is acceptable. Preserve the original, upscale late, inspect faces and text at 100 percent, and never confuse a plausible generated detail with a recovered fact.
