Short answer: Adobe Photoshop is the best all-round choice for professional illustration, compositing, retouching and client work; Procreate is the best iPad-first drawing app; Krita is the best free desktop painting program; Clip Studio Paint is the strongest choice for comics, manga, webtoons and 2D animation; and Rebelle 8 is the best specialist option for convincing watercolor and oil simulation.

There is no single best digital-art application for every artist. The right choice depends on what you make, which device you draw on, whether you exchange layered PSD files, and whether you prefer a subscription, perpetual license or free software. This guide is a dated 2025 snapshot: prices, mobile availability and major versions may have changed after the dates stated below.

Quick verdict: which digital-art program should you choose?

Software Best for Platforms 2025 ownership model Main drawback
Adobe Photoshop Professional mixed workflows Windows, macOS, iPad, iPhone; Android beta in 2025 Subscription Expensive over time and more complex than a painting-first app
Procreate iPad illustration and painting iPad; Procreate Pocket is separate for iPhone One-time purchase No Windows, macOS, Linux or Android version
Clip Studio Paint 4.0 Comics, manga, webtoons and animation Windows, macOS, iPad, iPhone, Android, Galaxy Perpetual license or subscription Complex interface; important features vary between PRO and EX
Krita 5.2.9 Free desktop painting Windows, macOS, Linux, Android tablets and ChromeOS Free and open source Less polished interchange and support than commercial suites
Rebelle 8 Realistic watercolor, oil and acrylic simulation Windows and macOS Perpetual license; one year of updates included Desktop-only, with the best PSD features reserved for Pro
GIMP 3.0 Free photo editing and compositing Windows, macOS and Linux Free and open source More image-editor-oriented than painting-oriented; PSD is not perfect
Adobe Fresco Free raster, vector and Live Brush drawing iPad, iPhone and Windows Free commercial app Not a full desktop Photoshop replacement
Affinity Photo 2 Subscription-free editing during most of 2025 Windows, macOS and iPad Paid perpetual V2 product during most of 2025 Its late-2025 transition makes pricing and version advice date-sensitive
Corel Painter 2023 High-end traditional-media brushes Windows and macOS Paid desktop software with a 15-day trial Expensive and unusually dated for a 2025 buying guide
Sketchbook Simple sketching and ideation Windows, macOS, iPad, iPhone and Android Varies by edition and store Not designed for advanced compositing or studio production

My default recommendations: choose Photoshop if clients, photo compositing, print, typography and PSD exchange matter more than a specialized brush experience. Choose Krita if you want serious desktop painting without paying. Choose Procreate if you already own an iPad and Apple Pencil. Choose Clip Studio Paint if your work is built around panels, speech balloons, rulers or animation.

What counts as digital-art software?

Digital art is a broad category. In this guide it means software used for raster painting and illustration, photo-based paintover and compositing, vector-assisted drawing, comics and manga, frame-by-frame 2D animation, natural-media simulation, sketching and mobile drawing. The focus is primarily 2D painting and illustration, consistent with Creative Bloq’s explanation of the category.

Dedicated 3D sculpting and modeling packages such as Blender or ZBrush, CAD tools, presentation software, template makers and AI image generators without a conventional drawing workflow are outside the main ranking. They can be useful in an art pipeline, but they solve a different problem.

Painting software versus image-editing software

The most important distinction is not the number of brushes advertised. It is whether the application is built around making marks on a canvas or manipulating existing pixels and documents.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Type Typical strengths Typical weaknesses Examples
Painting-first Brush engines, pressure and tilt response, stabilization, texture, smudge and blend behavior, drawing assistants, natural-media effects May offer weaker retouching, typography, automated compositing, color correction or production tools Krita, Procreate, Rebelle, Corel Painter, Clip Studio Paint
Image-editing-first Selections, masks, adjustment layers, retouching, compositing, typography, smart objects, broad format support Brushes may feel less specialized or less natural for a purely painterly workflow Photoshop, GIMP, Affinity Photo

Photoshop is unusual because it combines both approaches well. It is not automatically the most pleasurable choice for a painter who only wants to sketch and blend color, but it is difficult to beat when a single file must contain painted elements, photographs, masks, type, effects and client revisions. That broad-versus-specialist distinction is also reflected in Creative Bloq’s comparison of Photoshop with specialist painting applications.

How these recommendations were assessed

This is a research-based editorial comparison rather than a claim of laboratory-measured latency, crash rates or brush benchmarks. Version and platform statements are tied to the dates and vendor documentation cited in each section. Subjective claims about natural-media feel are described as editorial judgments or attributed to comparative coverage rather than presented as universal measurements.

A useful way to compare applications is to weight the factors according to the work being done:

Criterion Suggested weight What to examine
Drawing and brush quality 20% Pressure, tilt, stabilization, texture, customization, latency and blend behavior
Workflow fit 20% Painting, comics, animation, compositing, vector work or natural-media simulation
Layers and documents 15% Groups, masks, clipping, blend modes, vector layers, adjustment layers and page management
Platform and device support 15% Operating system, stylus support, mobile parity and cross-device workflow
File interchange 10% PSD, TIFF, PDF, SVG, native formats, layer preservation and color profiles
Ease of use 10% Interface clarity, onboarding, shortcuts, customization and discoverability
Cost and ownership 10% Free status, subscription, upgrades, trials and platform-specific licensing

For a genuine hands-on review, the same test pack should be used in every program: a 4,000 × 4,000-pixel RGB canvas; a short pressure-sensitive sketch; stabilized lines; textured, opaque and wet-media brushes; groups, masks, selections, transforms and blend modes; a layered PSD containing raster, text and masks; PSD, PNG, TIFF and PDF exports; a print-oriented color-profile test; large-brush performance; autosave and recovery; and animation only where animation is a stated use case. Any performance result should also record the device, operating system, application version, stylus, canvas and date.

Platform comparison

Mobile availability does not mean feature parity. Photoshop on an iPhone is not the same application as Photoshop on a desktop; Krita on an Android tablet is not necessarily equivalent to Krita on Windows; and Sketchbook maintains separate desktop and mobile experiences.

Krita’s January 29, 2025 release documentation specifically described support for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android tablets and ChromeOS, while Android phones were not supported and the Android version remained beta. Clip Studio Paint’s 4.0 announcement listed Windows, macOS, iPad, iPhone, Android and Galaxy. Adobe announced Photoshop for iPhone on February 25, 2025 and an Android beta on June 3, 2025; Adobe’s mobile requirements also document limitations, including tablet and Chromebook restrictions for the cited Android release.

1. Adobe Photoshop: best overall for professional mixed workflows

Best for: Illustrators, concept artists, designers, retouchers, agencies and freelancers who need painting, photo compositing, typography, masking and reliable client interchange in one application.

Platforms: Windows and macOS desktop; iPad and iPhone; Android mobile expansion in 2025. The desktop, web and mobile versions do not have the same feature set.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Payment: Subscription only. Adobe’s plans page lists standalone Photoshop, Photography and broader Creative Cloud options, but the final price depends on country, billing term, tax and promotion. Do not assume a price seen in one region or year applies everywhere.

Photoshop wins the overall category because it handles the awkward middle ground between art and production. Its layers, masks, selections, brushes, adjustment tools, retouching, plugins, typography and compositing make it suitable for a painted illustration that later needs photographs, editable type, color correction or client revisions. It is also a familiar handoff format in many professional workflows, although familiarity should not be confused with a guaranteed industry-wide standard or market-share statistic.

Its main weakness is that breadth comes at a cost. A pure painter may find the interface overbuilt, the subscription unattractive and the brush experience less focused than Krita, Procreate, Rebelle or Painter. Adobe-specific smart objects, adjustment layers, text and effects may not round-trip perfectly into another application even when both programs can open a PSD.

Adobe’s 2025 expansion also put Firefly-powered features such as Generative Fill, Generative Expand, object selection and removal more prominently into the workflow. Adobe says Firefly was trained on licensed content and public-domain material, but that is an Adobe position—not a universal legal guarantee. AI is useful for cleanup, exploration and production assistance, but it is not evidence that Photoshop is the best drawing application. Artists who do not want generative tools can still use Photoshop’s conventional painting and editing features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The desktop version remains the serious choice. Adobe’s web-versus-desktop comparison lists desktop-only or more advanced capabilities including fuller selections, filters, neural filters, warp tools and smart-object functionality.

Choose it if: your work moves between illustration, photography, design, print and client revisions.

Skip it if: you only want a low-cost sketchbook, a natural-media simulator or a focused comic-production application.

Use instead: Procreate for iPad drawing, Krita for free desktop painting, Clip Studio Paint for comics, Rebelle for wet media or Affinity Photo 2 for a subscription-free 2025 editing workflow.

2. Procreate: best iPad drawing and painting app

Best for: iPad artists who want a fast, touch-friendly illustration and painting canvas with strong Apple Pencil integration.

Platforms: iPad only for the main Procreate application. Procreate Pocket is a separate iPhone product. There is no native Windows, macOS, Linux or Android version.

Payment: One-time iPad purchase rather than a subscription, according to the official product page and App Store listing.

Procreate is the easiest recommendation when the hardware decision has already been made: an iPad and Apple Pencil. Its iPad-first interface keeps the canvas central while still providing layers, masks, blend modes, drawing guides, animation assistance, time-lapse recording, customizable Brush Studio settings and a large brush library. It feels like a drawing instrument before it feels like a desktop production suite.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Procreate supports its native .procreate format as well as PSD, JPEG, PNG, TIFF, PDF, GIF, MP4, HEVC, OBJ and USDZ, with different capabilities for importing and exporting each type. Its documented PSD export preserves layers, names, visibility, opacity and blend modes in the supported workflow. That is useful for handing an illustration to Photoshop, but it does not make Procreate a complete replacement for Photoshop’s vector, typography, retouching and compositing ecosystem.

A major file caveat is vector import. The cited Procreate documentation does not support importing AI, EPS or SVG files. If your job begins with editable logos, vector artwork or complex typography, use a vector-capable companion application or start in Photoshop, Affinity, Illustrator or another appropriate tool.

Procreate’s native format is the safer archival copy because it retains artwork data, settings and embedded time-lapse information. However, local autosave is not independent backup. Procreate warns that work stored only on the iPad can be permanently lost if the app or device storage is lost.

  1. In the Procreate Gallery, tap Select.
  2. Choose the canvases or stacks to preserve.
  3. Tap Share.
  4. Choose the native Procreate format.
  5. Save it to Files, external storage or a cloud service that you separately back up.

Layer counts are not universally unlimited. They depend on canvas dimensions, color depth, iPad hardware and available memory. A very large print canvas can provide dramatically fewer layers than a small sketch canvas.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose it if: you want the most direct iPad painting experience and can live with Apple’s hardware ecosystem.

Skip it if: you need Windows, Android, Linux, desktop typography, serious vector import or a multi-page production pipeline.

Use instead: Adobe Fresco if vector brushes and Adobe integration matter, Clip Studio Paint for comics, or Krita on a desktop or supported Android tablet.

3. Clip Studio Paint 4.0: best for comics, manga, webtoons and animation

Best for: Comic artists, manga creators, webtoon artists, illustrators who need perspective and 3D references, and animators working in a 2D production environment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Platforms: Windows, macOS, iPad, iPhone, Android and Galaxy. The application is cross-platform, but license terms, device counts and feature availability differ by plan and platform.

2025 status: Version 4.0 launched on March 12, 2025. Its updates included puppet warp, filters, line-art extraction, object snapping, 3D primitives, expanded 3D-related workflows, audio layers, subtitles, watermarking and animation improvements.

Payment: Perpetual Windows and macOS licenses were available alongside monthly and annual plans. A March 2025 perpetual PRO license was listed at US$58.50, but regional pricing, promotions and edition-specific pricing vary. A perpetual license means indefinite use of the purchased major version, not unlimited access to every future feature. Newer features require an Update Pass, subscription or later major-version upgrade under the license rules.

Clip Studio Paint’s advantage is specialized production control. Vector layers are valuable for clean inking; comic-panel tools, speech balloons, perspective rulers and 3D reference assets reduce repetitive construction work; and page management makes it much more appropriate for a book or webtoon than a simple sketching application. Animation tools and audio-layer support also make it a stronger choice than most painting apps when the work extends beyond still images.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The PRO and EX distinction matters. PRO is aimed at illustration, concept art and single-page comics. EX adds multiple-page management and professional 2D animation features. Buying PRO because it is cheaper and discovering later that a page-based comic workflow requires EX is a common avoidable mistake.

Clip Studio Paint is less immediately approachable than Procreate, and its natural-media behavior is not its main selling point. Artists seeking the physical feel of wet watercolor or thick oil should look at Rebelle or Painter instead.

Choose it if: panels, rulers, speech balloons, vectors, 3D references, page organization or animation are central to your work.

Skip it if: you want the simplest possible sketchbook or the most convincing traditional-media simulation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use instead: Procreate for uncomplicated iPad illustration, Krita for free desktop painting or Photoshop for mixed photo-and-design production.

4. Krita 5.2.9: best free desktop painting application

Best for: Artists on Windows, macOS or Linux who want a serious painting-first application without a subscription.

Platforms: Windows, macOS, Linux, Android tablets and ChromeOS. In the January 29, 2025 release documentation, Android phones were not supported and the Android build was still beta.

Payment: Free and open source.

Krita is the strongest free recommendation for a desktop painter because its priorities are brushes and canvas work rather than advertising itself as a general-purpose Photoshop clone. The 5.2 line includes brush stabilizers, assistants, customizable dockers, vector, filter, group and file layers, onion-skin animation, PSD support, color management, HDR and EXR support and Python scripting. Those tools cover painting, illustration, concept art and some animation surprisingly well for free software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The cost is polish and ecosystem. Krita’s interface can feel dense, commercial support is not comparable to Adobe or Celsys, and complex PSD documents should be tested before they become the foundation of a client pipeline. It is not the first choice for advanced retouching, Adobe-specific production automation or an agency that must preserve every Photoshop feature.

Krita is particularly compelling for Linux users because it has a native desktop release, unlike Photoshop, Clip Studio Paint, Rebelle and Painter. On supported Android tablets and ChromeOS devices it can also be useful, but do not interpret that as universal phone support or automatic parity with the desktop build.

Choose it if: you want free, capable desktop painting and are willing to learn a customizable interface.

Skip it if: your primary need is high-fidelity Photoshop handoff, advanced retouching, a polished iPad experience or a turnkey comic-page workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use instead: GIMP 3.0 for image editing, Procreate for iPad, Photoshop for client compatibility or Clip Studio Paint for comics.

5. Rebelle 8: best realistic traditional-media simulation

Best for: Traditional painters who want digital watercolor, oil, acrylic, ink, pastel, pencil, marker and airbrush behavior rather than merely textured bitmap brushes.

Platforms: Windows and macOS only. The documented minimum is Windows 10 64-bit or macOS 10.15, 4GB of RAM and a graphics card with 1GB of RAM; recommended hardware is substantially stronger, especially for large canvases and simulation-heavy brushes.

Payment: Perpetual license with one year of free updates. Later updates require a new purchase or upgrade. Check the vendor’s current download and pricing page for the relevant country and edition rather than relying on a fixed old price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rebelle is built around physical-media behavior: pigment color mixing, watercolor granulation, wet diffusion, realistic drips, impasto, paper presets, masking, rulers, symmetry and time-lapse. Comparative coverage from Creative Bloq found its wet-media simulation more convincing than Fresco’s Live Brushes. That is a judgment about the cited testing, not an objective claim that Rebelle perfectly reproduces physical paint.

Rebelle 8 Pro adds bristle brushes, RealShader, SoftShadows, NanoPixel 2, metallic materials, advanced PSD import and export, color management, Motion IO and WebSocket control. The edition split matters if you need professional file exchange or the advanced simulation features. PSD support is strongest in Pro; it should still be tested against the exact Photoshop documents your clients use.

Natural-media simulation can be more demanding than ordinary sketching. Old tablet drivers, Windows Ink versus Wintab settings, high-resolution canvases and GPU limitations can change the experience. Try the available trial on your actual computer and stylus before committing.

Choose it if: the behavior of wet watercolor, pigment, paper and impasto matters more than broad compositing.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Skip it if: you need iPad or Android support, advanced typography, a large plugin ecosystem or a universal production suite.

Use instead: Corel Painter for a larger mature brush ecosystem, Krita for free desktop painting or Photoshop for mixed production work.

6. GIMP 3.0: best free Photoshop-style image editor

Best for: Free photo editing, retouching, compositing, general graphics and artists who need a capable open-source image editor on Windows, macOS or Linux.

Platforms: Windows, macOS and Linux. There is no official iPad application or mainstream native mobile version in the cited coverage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Payment: Free and open source.

GIMP 3.0 arrived on March 16, 2025 after seven years of development. The release added non-destructive editing for many commonly used filters, improved PSD export, additional file formats, expandable paint layers, stronger text styling, multiple-layer selection and transformation, and color-management improvements. For compositing and image editing, that makes GIMP a much more credible free alternative than older comparisons suggest.

It is still not simply Photoshop with the price removed. GIMP’s interface conventions and workflow can frustrate Photoshop converts, its brush-centric painting experience is less attractive than Krita’s, and PSD compatibility cannot preserve every Photoshop feature. Its CMYK workflow also needs care: GIMP has historically centered on RGB editing with conversion and soft-proof workflows rather than offering Photoshop’s same native CMYK production model. Read the project’s CMYK explanation before choosing it for a print-critical pipeline.

Choose it if: you need free open-source retouching and compositing, especially on Linux.

Skip it if: your priority is expressive brushwork, comic-page tools or natural-media simulation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use instead: Krita for painting, Affinity Photo 2 for the relevant pre-transition 2025 subscription-free workflow or Photoshop for the broadest commercial pipeline.

7. Adobe Fresco: best free raster-and-vector drawing option

Best for: Artists who want raster brushes, vector brushes and Adobe Live Brushes in one free application, especially on iPad or iPhone.

Platforms: iPadOS, iOS and Windows in the cited Adobe product information. It is not a full desktop macOS Photoshop alternative and is not available for Android.

Payment: Adobe markets Fresco as free. Adobe also describes thousands of brushes, Live Brushes, motion presets, animation tools and unlimited layers, although practical layer capacity still depends on canvas size and device memory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fresco’s distinctive feature is the combination of raster, vector and Live Brushes. That makes it more versatile than a purely raster sketchbook and useful for artists who want Adobe integration without immediately paying for Photoshop. It is a sensible beginner option on an iPad, particularly if vector strokes or simple animation matter.

Its weakness is depth. It is not a replacement for full Photoshop, and the cited Creative Bloq comparison found its Live Brushes less convincing for natural-media realism than Rebelle or ArtRage. Artists who want the most focused iPad raster experience will generally prefer Procreate; artists who want desktop production tools will generally prefer Photoshop, Krita or Affinity.

Choose it if: you want a free mobile drawing app with raster and vector options.

Skip it if: you need Photoshop’s complete desktop toolset or the strongest physical-paint simulation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Affinity Photo 2: best subscription-free Photoshop alternative for most of 2025

Best for: Raster editing, compositing and design-minded artists who wanted to avoid an Adobe subscription during the main Affinity V2 period.

Important date qualification: Affinity’s product situation changed substantially after October 30, 2025. For most of early and mid-2025, Affinity Photo 2 was a paid, subscription-free application with PSD import and export. Canva later announced a new free Affinity application that unified raster, vector and layout workflows. Therefore, do not describe Affinity as simply free or simply paid without stating which product and date you mean.

Platforms for Affinity Photo 2: Windows, macOS and iPad in the relevant V2 period.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Affinity Photo 2 is attractive for artists who need selections, masks, adjustments, retouching, layers and PSD exchange but do not want a recurring Adobe bill. It is primarily an image editor and compositor, not a dedicated painting application. Its brush workflow is less specialized than Procreate, Krita, Clip Studio Paint, Rebelle or Painter.

The late-2025 transition is a serious evergreen-guide warning. A price, license promise or feature description written for Affinity Photo 2 before October 30 should not be silently applied to the later Affinity product. Use the V2 information for the historical 2025 product and the late-2025 transition coverage for the later change.

Choose it if: you want non-subscription raster editing and your required Photoshop features have been tested in PSD round-tripping.

Skip it if: your priority is freehand painting, manga production or natural-media behavior.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use instead: GIMP 3.0 for free open-source editing, Krita for free painting or Photoshop for the widest professional compatibility.

9. Corel Painter 2023: best high-end natural-media specialist

Best for: Desktop artists who want a mature, highly customizable traditional-media brush system and are prepared to pay for it.

Platforms: Windows and macOS. The cited coverage does not list iPad or Android versions.

2025 status: Corel’s relevant product and help pages continued to identify Painter 2023 as the major edition during the period covered here. That makes Painter a specialist recommendation rather than an obvious default for a 2025 buyer.

Painter 2023 introduced Fluid Paint technology, improved selections and color-selection tools, while its broader appeal remains the depth of its traditional-media brushes and customization. It is a serious choice for artists who already understand why they want a specialized natural-media application.

The drawbacks are cost, desktop-only availability and version age. It is less suitable than Photoshop for broad compositing and less accessible than Procreate or Krita for casual drawing. Corel offers a 15-day trial through its trial page, which is particularly important here: test the brushes and performance on your own hardware before purchasing.

Choose it if: you specifically want a mature traditional-media studio on Windows or macOS.

Skip it if: you need mobile support, a low total cost or a modern all-purpose production workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use instead: Rebelle 8 for wet-media behavior, Krita for free painting or Photoshop for mixed illustration and editing.

10. Sketchbook: best simple sketching application

Best for: Beginners, ideation, visual notes, concept thumbnails and straightforward illustration across desktop and mobile.

Platforms: Windows, macOS, iPad, iPhone and Android through separate desktop and mobile applications. The official documentation makes clear that these are separate experiences rather than one identical application everywhere.

Payment: Pricing varies by edition and store. Sketchbook is distributed through the Microsoft Store, Mac App Store, Apple App Store and Google Play; verify the listing for the device you actually use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sketchbook keeps the interface streamlined and offers layers, blend modes, customizable brushes, pencils, markers, airbrushes, paint and smear tools. It is a good choice when opening the application and drawing immediately matters more than having every production feature.

It is not the best tool for advanced photo compositing, professional comic-page management, realistic pigment simulation, complex print production or a large studio pipeline. Its simplicity is the reason to choose it, not a limitation to apologize for.

Choose it if: you want a lightweight sketchbook with versions for your computer and mobile device.

Which program is best for your workflow?

Best software for beginners

  • iPad and Apple Pencil: Start with Procreate for the clearest painting-first workflow, or Fresco if vector brushes and Adobe integration are more important.
  • Windows or macOS with no budget: Start with Krita. It has a steeper interface than a simple sketchbook, but it gives a beginner room to grow without a subscription.
  • Android tablet: Choose Krita for painting, Clip Studio Paint for comics or Sketchbook for a simpler experience. Confirm that your device supports the relevant application and stylus features.
  • Phone only: Use a phone-first application such as ibisPaint or Sketchbook, but expect a smaller canvas, less comfortable ergonomics and mobile-specific limits. A phone is convenient for studies and sketches, not automatically a substitute for a desktop setup.
  • Traditional-media painter: Try Rebelle’s trial before buying. The correct choice depends heavily on whether its simulated water, pigment mixing and paper behavior feel right to you.

Do not recommend Photoshop automatically to every beginner. Its range is valuable, but a novice who only wants to draw may learn faster in Procreate, Krita, Fresco or Sketchbook.

Best free drawing software

Choose Krita for free desktop painting, especially on Windows, macOS or Linux. Choose GIMP 3.0 for free image editing, retouching and compositing. Choose Adobe Fresco for a free raster-and-vector mobile drawing experience. These are different types of “free,” but all three are more useful than treating a short trial as a long-term free solution.

Best software for Windows

Windows has the broadest choice. Photoshop is the safest professional generalist; Krita is the strongest free painter; Clip Studio Paint is the specialist choice for comics; Rebelle and Painter suit traditional-media simulation; and Sketchbook is the lightweight option. A screenless Wacom, Huion or XP-Pen tablet can work well with desktop applications, but pressure behavior depends on the tablet driver, operating-system settings and application configuration.

Best software for Mac

Photoshop is the most complete mixed-workflow choice. Procreate is not a Mac application despite being Apple-focused—it requires an iPad—so Mac users wanting a painting-first program should look at Krita, Clip Studio Paint, Rebelle, Painter or Sketchbook. GIMP and Affinity Photo 2 provide free or subscription-free editing alternatives for the relevant 2025 period.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best software for iPad

Procreate is the default iPad painting recommendation because its interface, brushes and Apple Pencil workflow are designed around the device. Choose Fresco if vector brushes, Live Brushes or Adobe integration matter. Choose Clip Studio Paint if you need comic tools, page management or animation. Photoshop for iPad is useful for selected editing tasks, but it should not be confused with the full desktop application.

Best software for Android tablets

Clip Studio Paint is the broadest specialist choice for comics and illustration on Android. Krita is appealing for free painting on supported Android tablets and ChromeOS devices, but its Android release was beta in the cited January 2025 documentation. Sketchbook is the simpler choice. Android phone and Android tablet support are not interchangeable, so check the store listing for the exact device.

Best software for comics, manga and webtoons

Choose Clip Studio Paint. Vector layers, panel tools, speech balloons, perspective rulers, 3D reference assets, page management and animation features address the repetitive production work that a general painting program leaves to manual workarounds. Buy the correct edition: EX is the important option for multiple-page management and more professional animation features.

Best software for animation

Clip Studio Paint is the strongest all-round recommendation among this list when animation is tied to illustration, comics or 2D production. Krita also includes animation and onion skinning at no cost. Procreate and Fresco offer animation assistance and motion tools suitable for short sequences and social content, while a dedicated animation package may be more appropriate for a large studio production.

Best software for realistic oil and watercolor

Start with Rebelle 8 for watercolor diffusion, pigment mixing, granulation and wet-media behavior. Consider Corel Painter 2023 if you want a mature, highly customizable traditional-media brush library. Both are desktop applications. Procreate, Fresco and Krita can create convincing painterly images, but they are not the same as choosing an application designed around physical-media simulation.

Best software for professional client work and print

Photoshop is the safest single choice when the brief combines painting, photographs, masks, text, retouching, plugins and client revisions. Before committing to any application, test the client’s actual template and confirm color-profile, PDF, font, transparency and layer requirements. “Supports PSD” does not guarantee that adjustment layers, masks, vector data, text, blend modes or smart objects will survive unchanged.

Best subscription-free option

For painting, choose Krita. For image editing during most of 2025, choose Affinity Photo 2 if its features and platform match your work. For natural media, consider Rebelle 8, remembering that its perpetual license includes one year of updates rather than every future major version. Clip Studio Paint also offered a perpetual license, but its purchased version is not the same as lifetime access to all later features.

File formats: the PSD warning every artist should read

PSD compatibility is not binary. An application may open a PSD as a flattened image, preserve raster layers but discard masks, retain blend modes but rasterize text, or export a file that Photoshop opens while rendering differently. The risk increases with adjustment layers, smart objects, vector layers, clipping masks, embedded profiles, complex typography and application-specific effects.

Before changing software for paid work:

  1. Obtain the exact PSD template or client sample.
  2. Open it in the proposed application.
  3. Check layer names, visibility, groups, masks, blend modes, text, vectors and color profiles.
  4. Make a controlled edit and export it back to PSD.
  5. Reopen the result in Photoshop, if Photoshop is part of the client pipeline.
  6. Keep a native copy in the application that created the file.

Procreate is a good example of the nuance. It can import and export layered PSD files, and its documented export preserves several important layer properties, but AI, EPS and SVG are not supported for import in the cited documentation. Krita advertises PSD support and color management, but complex documents still deserve testing. GIMP 3.0 improved PSD export without becoming a perfect Photoshop replacement. Rebelle’s strongest PSD interchange is in the Pro edition. Affinity Photo 2 supported PSD import and export, but the relevant license and product identity depend on the 2025 date.

Ownership, subscriptions and long-term cost

“Cheap” can mean cheap to start, cheap over five years, or simply free of a recurring bill. Compare these separately:

  • Free and open source: Krita and GIMP. There is no purchase price, but you may trade commercial support and ecosystem integration for community-driven development.
  • Free commercial application: Fresco is marketed as free, while its Adobe account and ecosystem may still matter to your workflow.
  • One-time purchase: Procreate is a one-time iPad purchase. Rebelle provides a perpetual license with one year of updates. Perpetual Clip Studio licenses provide indefinite use of the purchased major version.
  • Version-locked purchase: A perpetual license does not necessarily include future major versions or features. Clip Studio’s Update Pass and Rebelle’s update policy make that explicit.
  • Subscription: Photoshop requires a subscription. It can be worthwhile when you need ongoing updates and Adobe integration, but the cost continues even during periods when you create little.
  • Date-sensitive transition: Affinity Photo 2 was a paid subscription-free product during most of 2025, while Canva announced a new free Affinity application on October 30, 2025. Treat those as different product states.

Also check whether one license covers Windows, macOS, iPad and mobile simultaneously, whether cloud documents remain editable after cancellation, whether local files continue to open, and whether fonts, plugins or linked assets remain available.

Print, color and large documents

A digital painting can look correct on screen and still fail a print workflow. For professional output, check ICC profiles, soft proofing, RGB-to-CMYK conversion, bleed and trim, PDF/X export, transparency, embedded fonts and spot-color requirements. GIMP deserves particular caution because its workflow has historically been RGB-centered rather than identical to Photoshop’s native CMYK model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Large canvases also change the practical ranking. Layer limits depend on canvas dimensions, color depth, device RAM, application architecture, animation frames and embedded references. A claim such as “unlimited layers” should be read as a description of the software’s model, not a promise that every device can hold unlimited layers. Test a canvas at the dimensions and color depth you actually intend to deliver.

AI: useful feature, not a drawing-quality score

AI can speed up object selection, cleanup, expansion and exploratory compositing, but it should not decide which painting application is best. Ask four separate questions:

  • Are generative tools optional or central to the workflow?
  • Does the plan impose generative-credit or usage limits?
  • Can the artist avoid or disable those tools?
  • What provenance, client-consent and commercial-use requirements apply to the project?

Photoshop’s 2025 Firefly integration makes it attractive for production assistance, especially Generative Fill and Generative Expand. Adobe says Firefly was trained on licensed content and public-domain material; treat that as an attributed Adobe claim, not a universal legal guarantee. For an artist who wants a direct, non-generative painting experience, Procreate, Krita, Rebelle or Painter may be a better philosophical and practical fit.

Buyer warnings before you install

  • Mobile is not desktop: Compare the exact feature list for the device you own.
  • PSD is not a guarantee: Test the layers, masks, text, vectors, blend modes and profiles you need.
  • Procreate backup is your responsibility: Export native files to an independently backed-up location.
  • Perpetual does not mean forever-updated: Check major-version and Update Pass rules.
  • Subscription cancellation matters: Confirm what happens to cloud documents, local files and editability after cancellation.
  • Print requires color planning: RGB PNG export is not the same as a press-ready PDF/X workflow.
  • Hardware changes the experience: Test large canvases, high bit depth, GPU-heavy brushes and tablet drivers on your own machine.
  • Affinity advice needs a date: Separate Affinity Photo 2’s early/mid-2025 status from the later free Affinity announcement.

Final decision tree

  • Have an iPad and Apple Pencil? Start with Procreate. Choose Fresco if vector brushes and Adobe integration matter more.
  • Need free desktop painting? Choose Krita.
  • Need manga, comics, webtoons or illustrated animation? Choose Clip Studio Paint, and check whether you need PRO or EX.
  • Need the broadest professional image-and-art workflow? Choose Photoshop if the subscription is acceptable.
  • Need realistic watercolor or oils? Trial Rebelle 8 first; consider Painter if its mature desktop brush system better suits you.
  • Need free photo editing and compositing? Choose GIMP 3.0.
  • Need subscription-free compositing during most of 2025? Consider Affinity Photo 2, then verify which Affinity product and pricing applies to your date.
  • Need a lightweight sketchbook? Choose Sketchbook.
  • Use Linux? Start with Krita for painting or GIMP for image editing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Photoshop the best digital-art software for everyone?

No. Photoshop is the strongest general-purpose choice for professional mixed workflows involving painting, compositing, retouching, typography and client files. Procreate is better for many iPad artists, Krita is better for free desktop painting, Clip Studio Paint is better for comics, and Rebelle is better suited to natural-media simulation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is PSD support the same in every art application?

No. One application may preserve raster layers while another loses masks, adjustment layers, text, vectors, blend modes or smart objects. Test the exact client document and reopen the exported PSD in Photoshop before relying on it for paid work.

What is the best free drawing program in 2025?

Krita is the best general free desktop painting recommendation. GIMP 3.0 is stronger for free image editing and compositing, while Adobe Fresco is a useful free raster-and-vector option on supported iPad, iPhone and Windows devices.

Does Procreate automatically back up my artwork?

Procreate autosaves locally, but local autosave is not an independent backup. Export native .procreate files to Files, external storage or a separately backed-up cloud location. The native format best preserves layers, settings and time-lapse data.

Does a one-time purchase include all future updates?

Not necessarily. Procreate uses a one-time purchase model for the iPad app, while Clip Studio Paint perpetual licenses are tied to a purchased major version and Rebelle includes one year of updates before later upgrades may require payment. Always check the application’s current upgrade policy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

The best digital-art software is the one that matches the handoff, hardware and marks you actually make. Photoshop is the safest all-round professional recommendation, but it is not the automatic winner for pure painting. Procreate is the best iPad canvas, Krita is the best free desktop painter, Clip Studio Paint is the best comic-production tool, and Rebelle 8 is the most focused choice for digital watercolor and oils. Before buying, test your real stylus, canvas size and client PSD—not just the feature list.
