For traditional oil- or solvent-based enamel, start with a quality natural China-bristle brush: Sherwin-Williams recommends this type for oil-based paints because it supports flow and leveling. But “enamel” describes finishes made with different paint chemistries, so check the product label before choosing. Water-based enamel may call for a synthetic brush instead.

What brush should you use for enamel paint?
Match the brush to the paint’s chemistry first, then choose a shape and width suited to the surface. The word “enamel” alone does not tell you whether the coating is oil- or water-based.

- Water-based enamel: Check the paint maker’s instructions for a compatible brush; guidance for water-based coatings commonly favors synthetic fibers. Which brush shape and size work for trim?
For trim and corners, an angled sash brush can help you steer the bristles along edges. Sherwin-Williams describes the angled cut as useful for painting trim and corners. Sherwin-Williams: Selecting Brushes & Rollers.
For small spaces, tight trim, touch-ups and detail work, Sherwin-Williams gives 1 to 2 inches as a rule of thumb. That is a general sizing recommendation, not a measured performance result. For broader surfaces, consider a wider brush that covers the area efficiently while remaining comfortable to control.

How to apply enamel with a brush
- Follow the paint maker’s directions for application and cleanup.
- Use light pressure and aim for even coverage. Sherwin-Williams warns that excessive pressure can cause runs. Sherwin-Williams: Videos for Property Managers: Brush and Roller Basics.
- Choose a brush width and shape you can control on the surface; a trim brush is not automatically the right tool for a broad panel.
A brush’s fibers alone cannot guarantee a smooth finish. Paint compatibility, brush condition, surface preparation, the product’s directions and application technique all matter.

How to choose without overpaying for the wrong brush
- Read the paint label. Confirm whether the enamel is oil/solvent-based or water-based, then follow its brush guidance.
- Match the shape to the job. Choose an angled sash brush for trim and corners; select a width appropriate to the surface and the control required.
- Use a detail brush for hobby work. For models, compare brush size and fiber guidance intended for the specific paint and task.
- Check care instructions. Use the paint maker’s stated cleanup and application directions so the brush remains suitable for the coating.
There is no universal winning brush for every enamel paint and surface. These recommendations are manufacturer guidance, not an independent head-to-head test of particular brush models.
