For a busy kitchen, use a cabinet-specific waterborne enamel in satin as the default. It gives you a washable, durable surface with less glare and does a better job of disguising minor preparation flaws than shinier finishes. Choose semi-gloss when the easiest wipe-down and brighter reflected light matter more than hiding imperfections. Reserve high gloss for exceptionally smooth doors and meticulous application. Flat or matte paint is usually a poor choice for high-touch cabinet doors because it is more vulnerable to scuffs and stains and is harder to maintain.

The sheen matters, but the paint chemistry and preparation matter just as much. A cabinet enamel, thorough degreasing, sound primer adhesion, fine sanding and adequate curing determine whether the finish survives grease, repeated wiping and daily handling.

Satin cabinet enamel is the best all-around finish for most busy kitchens. It balances cleanability, durability, moderate reflection and the ability to hide small surface defects. Semi-gloss is the better choice when maximum wipeability is your first priority. High gloss can be very durable and easy to clean, but it magnifies dents, brush marks and uneven preparation. Matte and flat finishes hide defects most effectively yet generally wear poorly on doors that are touched and cleaned every day.

Satin: the practical default
Satin has enough sheen to support routine cleaning without creating the strong reflections associated with semi-gloss or gloss. Lowe’s describes satin as durable and easy to clean for drawers and cabinets, while Sherwin-Williams describes satin and eg-shel finishes as washable and appropriate for high-traffic areas. That combination makes satin a sensible default when a kitchen has frequent cooking, children, pets or visible natural light.
Satin is also more forgiving than a highly reflective finish. Minor waviness, shallow dents and small sanding marks are less conspicuous than they would be under high gloss. Satin is not a substitute for preparation, but it gives a well-prepared repaint a more forgiving visual result.
Semi-gloss: prioritize cleaning and light
Semi-gloss reflects more light and is among the easiest common cabinet sheens to wipe clean. Lowe’s identifies it as a favorite for kitchen cabinets because it is washable and resists stains, fading and chipping. Sherwin-Williams also lists semi-gloss for kitchens and describes it as easy to clean.

The stronger reflection can draw attention to dents, roller texture, brush marks and uneven edges. If your doors are in good condition and you want a brighter, more polished appearance, semi-gloss is a strong option. If the existing surfaces are slightly uneven, satin is usually more forgiving.
High gloss: only for very smooth doors
High gloss is the most reflective option. Its hard, shiny surface can be durable and easy to wipe, but every flaw becomes easier to see. Dents, brush marks, sanding scratches and uneven filler can stand out sharply under reflected light.
Use high gloss only when the doors and drawer fronts are genuinely smooth, the substrate has been carefully repaired and sanded, and the application quality will be high. It is a poor strategy for concealing damage or compensating for rushed preparation.

Matte or flat: attractive, but difficult on working doors
Flat and matte finishes minimize glare and conceal surface imperfections better than shinier sheens. Their lower reflectivity can look appealing on decorative cabinetry or lightly used areas. However, flatter surfaces are more prone to scuffs and stains and are harder to maintain on cabinet doors that are opened, touched and wiped repeatedly.

How do satin, semi-gloss, high gloss and matte compare?
The table below summarizes the practical trade-offs for a high-use kitchen. “Easiest wipe-down” refers to the relative cleaning advantage among the common cabinet sheens, not a measured cleaning-time test.
| Decision axis | Satin | Semi-gloss | High gloss | Matte or flat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cleaning | Easy to clean | Easiest wipe-down among common cabinet sheens | Easy to clean | More difficult to maintain |
| Glare | Moderate | Noticeable shine | Strong reflection | Minimal |
| Visibility of imperfections | Moderate | Higher | Highest | Lowest |
| Suitability for a busy kitchen | Best all-around default | Best when cleanability is the priority | Only on very smooth, well-prepared doors | Generally poor for high-touch doors |
Should I choose satin or semi-gloss for my cabinets?
Choose satin when you want the most balanced result: washable paint, moderate light reflection and less emphasis on minor flaws. Choose semi-gloss when grease, food splashes and frequent wiping are your dominant concerns and the cabinet surfaces are smooth enough to look good under stronger reflection.
- Choose satin for older doors with small cosmetic irregularities, kitchens with substantial daylight glare, or a softer painted appearance.
- Choose semi-gloss for households that clean cabinets constantly, areas near a range or sink, and doors that are already smooth and well prepared.
- Choose high gloss only when you are prepared to repair, prime, sand and apply with exceptional consistency.
- Avoid matte or flat on doors and drawer fronts that receive daily contact unless the area is decorative and lightly used.
Whichever sheen you select, use the same cabinet enamel system on all visible surfaces unless the product label specifies otherwise. A sheen cannot make an unsuitable wall paint perform like a purpose-made cabinet coating.
Which cabinet paint chemistry holds up best to grease and constant wiping?
Use a cabinet-specific waterborne enamel rather than an ordinary wall paint. The products described by the manufacturers below are formulated or positioned for trim, cabinetry or other high-use interior surfaces. Their claims are qualitative; no independent numeric wear or scratch results were published for a direct, apples-to-apples ranking.

Benjamin Moore Advance Interior Paint
Benjamin Moore’s kitchen-cabinet catalog lists Advance Interior Paint in satin, semi-gloss and high gloss. Each sheen is described as providing a durable, smooth finish, allowing you to choose the appearance and reflection level without changing to a different named product.
Benjamin Moore Insl-X Cabinet Coat
Insl-X Cabinet Coat is marketed for kitchen and bathroom cabinets in satin and semi-gloss. Benjamin Moore describes it as resisting chipping, scuffing, food stains, grease and water, with an ultra-smooth, factory-like finish. Those are manufacturer claims, so follow the label for preparation, application, drying, curing and cleaning instructions.
How to interpret product claims
Terms such as “scratch resistant,” “factory-like” and “durable” describe intended performance, not a universal guarantee under every household’s conditions. The final result still depends on removing grease, establishing primer adhesion, sanding defects, applying the correct film thickness and allowing the coating to cure before heavy use. There are no independent numeric performance statistics in the available product information that would justify declaring one brand a measured winner over another.

What preparation do kitchen cabinets need before painting?
Preparation determines whether enamel bonds to the cabinet and whether a reflective sheen looks smooth. Plan to remove the doors and hardware, eliminate grease, check adhesion and repair defects before applying finish coats.
- Remove doors and hardware. Take doors and drawer fronts off their hinges and remove knobs, pulls and other hardware. This prevents paint from collecting around hinges and allows you to coat edges evenly.
- Degrease every surface. Clean the cabinet boxes, doors, drawer fronts and edges thoroughly with a degreaser to remove cooking oil, grease and embedded soil. Paint applied over residue can lose adhesion even when the surface looks visually clean.
- Test primer adhesion. In an inconspicuous area, test how the primer bonds. Dirty, damp or glossy surfaces can compromise adhesion, so correct those conditions before proceeding across the whole kitchen.
- Fill and repair defects. Fill dents, open grain and other surface defects with a suitable filler. Once repairs are ready, prime as needed, allow the primer to dry for at least 24 hours, then sand with a very fine grit and remove all sanding dust.
- Inspect before finish paint. Look across the doors under the room’s actual lighting. High gloss and semi-gloss will reveal flaws that may be difficult to see under diffuse light; repair and sand again if necessary.
Primer is especially important when the existing coating is glossy, contaminated or otherwise uncertain. The adhesion test gives you an early warning before a failure is spread over every door.
How do I apply cabinet enamel without obvious brush marks?
Use a brush for recessed details and a mini roller for broad, flat faces. This division of labor reduces visible brush marks while preserving control around profiles, corners and molding.
- Work on manageable components. Paint doors, drawer fronts and cabinet boxes in an order that lets you keep a wet working area without touching freshly coated surfaces.
- Brush recessed details first. Coat grooves, bevels, rails, stiles and other profiled areas with the brush. Keep the application even and avoid leaving heavy ridges at the boundaries between recessed and flat sections.
- Roll flat faces with a mini roller. Use the mini roller on broad panels and flat cabinet sides to reduce the brush texture that can remain visible after drying.
- Apply the selected sheen consistently. Use the cabinet enamel in satin, semi-gloss or gloss as chosen for the room. Follow the product label for application conditions, ventilation and cleanup.
- Allow the first coat to dry before recoating. The cabinet-paint guidance calls for about 24–48 hours before the second coat. Do not shorten that interval because the surface feels dry at the edges.
High-gloss finishes demand the most disciplined application because reflected light makes uneven film thickness, brush marks and sanding scratches easier to see. Satin is more forgiving visually, but it still benefits from an even coat and clean tools.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How long should cabinet paint dry before I reinstall the hardware?
Allow about 24–48 hours before applying the second coat, then another 24–48 hours before reinstalling hardware, following the product label if it specifies a longer interval. Those are drying and handling intervals, not a promise that the coating has reached its ultimate cure under every temperature or humidity condition.
Keep doors and drawer fronts protected from contact while the enamel continues to cure. Ventilation, temperature, humidity, film thickness and the specific product all affect the result, so use the manufacturer’s instructions for curing, cleanup and any respirator requirements. Reinstalling hardware early can mark a finish that has not developed sufficient resistance to pressure and abrasion.

Which finish is easiest to clean after grease and food splashes?
Semi-gloss generally offers the easiest wipe-down among common cabinet sheens, while satin provides nearly as practical a surface with less glare. A cabinet-specific enamel is more important than choosing the shiniest possible finish: the coating must adhere and cure properly before it can resist routine cleaning.
For product-specific claims, Lowe’s describes semi-gloss as washable and resistant to stains, fading and chipping. Benjamin Moore markets Insl-X Cabinet Coat as resistant to food stains, grease and water in satin and semi-gloss. These statements describe the manufacturers’ intended performance; use the cleaning method and waiting period on the label rather than assuming every household cleaner is suitable.
What are the most common cabinet-painting failures and how do I fix them?
| Symptom | Likely cause | Corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| Paint peels or scratches easily | Grease, moisture or a glossy surface prevented sound adhesion | Stop, remove loose coating, degrease and dry thoroughly, then test primer adhesion in an inconspicuous area before recoating. |
| Brush marks remain visible | The brush was used across broad flat faces or the finish was overworked | Use a brush for recessed details and a mini roller for flat faces; sand only after the coat is dry and remove dust before recoating. |
| High-gloss doors look uneven | Dents, sanding scratches or inconsistent preparation are emphasized by reflection | Repair and fill defects, prime as needed, sand with very fine grit and reassess under the kitchen’s actual lighting. |
| Edges collect paint around hinges | Doors or hardware were left installed during painting | Remove doors and hardware, then coat edges and hinge areas separately. |
| Hardware leaves marks in the new coating | Hardware was reinstalled before the recommended handling interval | Wait the additional 24–48 hours specified for hardware reinstallation, or longer if the product label requires it. |
| Flat finish shows scuffs and stains | The sheen is too low for a high-touch, frequently cleaned surface | Use a cabinet enamel in satin or semi-gloss on future coats; reserve matte or flat for decorative, lightly used areas. |
What safety precautions apply when sanding old cabinets?
Sanding or scraping old paint can create lead dust or fumes. If the existing coating may contain lead, use appropriate respiratory protection, containment and cleanup practices, and consult local guidance before disturbing it.
Regardless of lead risk, follow the product label for ventilation, drying, curing, cleanup and respirator requirements. Keep the work area controlled so sanding dust does not settle on freshly cleaned surfaces or migrate into food-preparation areas.
What should be on my cabinet-painting checklist?
- Cabinet-specific waterborne enamel in satin, semi-gloss or high gloss, selected for the kitchen’s traffic and the condition of the doors.
- Degreaser capable of removing cooking oil and residue.
- Primer appropriate for the existing surface, used after an inconspicuous adhesion test when needed.
- Filler for dents and other defects.
- Very fine sanding sheets and a method for removing dust completely.
- An angled or detail brush for recessed profiles.
- A mini roller for flat faces.
- Ventilation and the protective equipment specified on the product label.
- Enough time for at least 24 hours of primer drying, approximately 24–48 hours before recoating, and another 24–48 hours before reinstalling hardware, unless the label calls for longer.
If you want one decision rather than a long comparison, choose a satin cabinet enamel. Move to semi-gloss when wipeability and reflected light outweigh the need to disguise minor flaws; use high gloss only on exceptionally smooth, carefully prepared doors.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a clear topcoat over cabinet enamel?
The product descriptions for the cabinet enamels discussed here emphasize the enamel’s own durability and smooth finish; they do not establish a universal requirement for a separate clear coat. Follow the specific product label rather than adding an unapproved topcoat that could change sheen or adhesion.
Are there independent numbers proving one cabinet paint lasts longer?
No independent numeric wear, scratch or cleaning results were published in the available product information. The comparisons are based on manufacturer descriptions of resistance, adhesion, flow, leveling and intended use, not on a standardized head-to-head laboratory score.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCan the same cabinet coating be used in a bathroom?
Some products are marketed for both kitchens and bathrooms. Benjamin Moore positions Insl-X Cabinet Coat for kitchen and bathroom cabinets, but the label remains the authority for surface preparation, ventilation, drying and cleaning.
Is a lower-traffic cabinet enamel acceptable for a kitchen?
Sherwin-Williams positions ProClassic Waterborne Interior Acrylic Enamel as a good choice for lower-traffic cabinetry because of its adhesion, smooth finish and easy cleanup. For doors exposed to constant handling and cleaning, compare that positioning with a product specifically described for frequently cleaned kitchens.
