Most “copyright-free fonts” are not actually free of copyright. They are copyrighted typefaces released under licenses that permit commercial use. For most projects, Google Fonts is the safest starting point: its fonts are open source and available for commercial projects, although individual families may use the SIL Open Font License, Apache License 2.0, Ubuntu Font License, or another stated license.

That distinction matters when you are creating a logo, selling artwork or merchandise, building a website, making social graphics, producing videos, preparing client files, or embedding fonts in software. The recommendations below focus on attractive fonts with clear licensing and practical commercial uses.

Quick picks: the best free fonts for commercial use

Font Best for License Main limitation
Inter Websites, apps, SaaS, dashboards, modern branding SIL Open Font License 1.1 Do not sell the font by itself; modified versions may need a new name
DM Sans Interfaces, ecommerce, presentations, contemporary branding SIL Open Font License 1.1 Check language coverage; its documented coverage focuses on Latin Extended
Roboto General-purpose UI and technical products Apache 2.0 materials for the Roboto repository Keep the exact license with the downloaded files
Open Sans Readable websites, documentation, business communications Open-source; verify the downloaded family license Adobe Fonts access is governed by Adobe’s service terms
Google Sans Code Code samples, developer tools, technical branding SIL Open Font License 1.1 A specialized monospace font, not a universal body typeface
DM Serif Display Posters, packaging, editorial headings, premium branding SIL Open Font License 1.1 Designed primarily for display sizes
IBM Plex Corporate identity, technical publishing, multilingual systems Check the current family license Confirm script coverage and the license for the exact variant
Libre Baskerville Long-form editorial work and readable serif text Verify the current Google Fonts license file Primarily a serif family; pair it with a restrained sans
Source Serif 4 Books, articles, documentation, corporate publishing Verify the current family license Different distributions may have different source pages
Noto Sans and Noto Serif Projects requiring broad script support Open-source; verify the specific script package “Noto” is a large collection, not a guarantee of every language

These are recommendations by design role, not an objective ranking. The right choice depends on your medium, language, brand personality, required weights, and whether the font must be distributed inside an app or product.

What “copyright-free” means for fonts

“Copyright-free” is usually an imprecise description. A typeface’s outlines and the font software that encodes them may still be copyrighted. What matters commercially is the license attached to the font files.

  • Public-domain fonts: Copyright restrictions may have expired or been waived, but this status should be verified rather than assumed.
  • Open-source fonts: The license permits specified freedoms such as use, modification, and redistribution.
  • Free fonts for commercial use: Commercial projects are allowed, but other restrictions may remain.
  • Personal-use fonts: Free downloads may prohibit business, client, merchandise, advertising, or paid work.
  • Subscription fonts: Access is provided through a service such as Adobe Fonts and is governed by service terms.
  • Trial fonts: A free file may be offered only for evaluation or limited uses.

Use the clearer terms free fonts for commercial use, open-source fonts, or commercially usable fonts when discussing these typefaces.

Best free sans-serif fonts

Inter: the strongest all-purpose choice

Inter is a dependable choice for websites, painting portfolios, ecommerce stores, apps, dashboards, captions, and modern identity systems. Its SIL Open Font License 1.1 permits commercial use of finished designs and allows the font software to be modified, embedded, and redistributed under the license.

Do not sell Inter as a standalone font. If you modify the files, check whether the Reserved Font Name “Inter” applies and retain the required notices.

Open Sans: readable and practical

Open Sans works well for artist statements, documentation, service pages, menus, captions, and business communications. It is a useful choice when readability matters more than a highly distinctive display style.

It is also available through Adobe Fonts. Downloading or activating it through Adobe is not the same as independently owning and redistributing the font files, so follow the terms of the source you use.

Roboto: a flexible UI workhorse

Roboto suits interfaces, technical products, mobile layouts, and general web use. The current Roboto repository provides Apache 2.0 licensing materials. Do not assume that every Google Font uses the SIL Open Font License; check the exact family and version you download.

DM Sans: a contemporary geometric sans

DM Sans gives ecommerce sites, presentations, galleries, and contemporary branding a cleaner geometric feel than many default sans serifs. Its documented family description identifies Latin Extended coverage, so test every required language before using it for an international identity.

Best serif fonts

DM Serif Display and DM Serif Text

DM Serif Display is suited to large titles, packaging, posters, artwork labels, and premium-feeling branding. Use it at its intended display sizes and pair it with a simpler sans for supporting information. DM Serif Text is the more practical option when serif text must remain readable at smaller sizes.

Libre Baskerville

Libre Baskerville is a restrained choice for essays, artist biographies, editorial pages, and other long-form text. Pair it with Inter, Open Sans, or another quiet sans rather than combining it with several decorative faces.

Source Serif 4

Source Serif 4 works well for books, articles, documentation, and corporate publishing. Before delivery, verify the license and version in the current Google Fonts or Adobe source repository.

Best monospace fonts

Google Sans Code

Google Sans Code is a newer specialized monospace option for code samples, developer tools, technical graphics, and technology-focused branding. It is released under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. It is not usually the best choice for paragraphs or a complete brand system.

IBM Plex Mono and Roboto Mono

IBM Plex Mono is a strong fit for technical publishing and corporate systems. Roboto Mono is useful for code, tables, and technical interfaces. Check the current license file for the exact family and distribution before bundling either one.

Best fonts for multilingual projects

Noto Sans and Noto Serif are sensible starting points when a project needs more than English. The Noto collection covers many scripts, but no single selection should be assumed to support every language. Check the specific script package, glyph coverage, punctuation, currencies, and fallback behavior.

IBM Plex and Source families may also suit multilingual corporate or editorial systems, provided the required scripts are actually supported. Test accented European text, Vietnamese, Cyrillic, Greek, Arabic, Hebrew, Devanagari, CJK text, and specialist symbols when relevant.

Useful font pairings

These pairings are design suggestions, not additional licensing claims:

  • Inter + DM Serif Display: practical interface text with expressive headings.
  • DM Sans + DM Serif Text: contemporary branding with a softer editorial contrast.
  • Open Sans + Libre Baskerville: highly readable business or editorial layouts.
  • IBM Plex Sans + IBM Plex Serif: a coherent corporate and technical system.
  • Roboto + Roboto Slab: familiar UI text with a sturdy display accent.
  • Source Sans 3 + Source Serif 4: flexible publishing and documentation.

Font licenses: what you are allowed to do

SIL Open Font License 1.1

The SIL Open Font License generally permits you to use, study, modify, embed, and redistribute the font. Commercial products containing the font—such as books, logos, websites, videos, packaging, posters, and software—are allowed.

The font software itself cannot be sold alone. When you redistribute the font, retain its copyright and license notices. Modified versions remain under the OFL, and a Reserved Font Name may require you to rename the modified family. Ordinary finished artwork generally does not require an attribution line, although the license still governs the font software.

Apache License 2.0

Some Google Fonts families use Apache 2.0 rather than OFL. Apache 2.0 generally permits commercial use, modification, and redistribution subject to its license and notice conditions. It is not interchangeable with OFL: read the actual license file for the family and version you use.

Proprietary free-commercial-use licenses

A font can be free for commercial artwork while restricting web hosting, app embedding, font-file redistribution, editable templates, merchandise, modifications, or trademark use. A directory’s “commercial use” filter is not a substitute for the license on the font’s own download page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to verify a downloaded font

  1. Download it from the official family page, designer, foundry, or reputable distributor.
  2. Unzip the package and locate OFL.txt, LICENSE.txt, LICENSE, README, or the repository’s license section.
  3. Confirm that the license names the exact family and version.
  4. Check Reserved Font Names, attribution or notice requirements, app-embedding rules, webfont restrictions, template terms, and resale restrictions.
  5. Save the license file beside your project source files.
  6. Record the download date and source URL.
  7. For client work, note the font name, version, license, and source in the handoff documentation.

The Google Fonts repository stores family metadata and license information in the relevant family directories and advises users to read the license for every font they use.

How to use Google Fonts on a website

The simplest method is to copy the current embed code from the font’s Google Fonts page. A generic Inter example looks like this:

<link rel="preconnect" href="https://fonts.googleapis.com">
<link rel="preconnect" href="https://fonts.gstatic.com" crossorigin>
<link href="https://fonts.googleapis.com/css2?family=Inter:wght@400;500;600;700&display=swap" rel="stylesheet">
body {
  font-family: "Inter", sans-serif;
}

For version control, privacy, or uptime control, download the official files and self-host them with @font-face. Keep the license and copyright notices in your repository. Load only the weights you need, use font-display: swap, test fallback layout shifts, and verify that subsetting has not removed required characters.

Installing fonts on a computer

  1. Download the official package.
  2. Install the supplied .otf or .ttf files through your operating system’s font installer.
  3. Restart the design application if the family does not appear.
  4. Remove or avoid duplicate versions downloaded from different sources.
  5. Keep the original package and license for future verification.

Using fonts in commercial projects

Logos and artwork

With an OFL font, creating a logo, poster, painting title, label, or other artwork is generally permitted. The finished artwork is not itself font software. Do not sell the font file as the logo asset, and do not imply that the type designer endorses your brand.

Outlining lettering is not the same as modifying and redistributing the font. Trademark registration is a separate question governed by the logo and applicable jurisdiction; the font license alone does not guarantee registration.

Websites, print, social graphics, and video

OFL fonts are generally suitable for websites, printed products, packaging, social-media graphics, PDFs, books, and videos, including paid commercial work. Keep the relevant license when the font software itself travels with the project. Confirm the exact terms for any proprietary font.

Client work and handoff

Prefer downloadable open-source fonts when a client, printer, developer, or collaborator must continue editing or self-hosting the work. A subscription-activated font may render correctly in a delivered PDF or image without giving the recipient permission to install or redistribute the font.

Editable templates

Templates create a common licensing trap. If buyers must install a font, link them to the official download and include the license. Avoid bundling font files unless redistribution is clearly permitted. Also check whether the template marketplace’s terms permit commercial resale.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apps, games, and software

Embedding a font in software is different from using it in a graphic. OFL fonts generally allow embedding and bundling, but the license and notices must accompany redistributed font software. Modified files must remain under the OFL, and Reserved Font Names may require a new family name.

Do not assume that ordinary Adobe Fonts activation covers independent app embedding or redistribution. Review Adobe’s licensing guidance and its product-specific terms.

Where to download more commercially usable fonts

Google Fonts

Google Fonts is the best general-purpose source for downloadable files, web projects, self-hosting, open-source workflows, and client handoffs. Its developer documentation explains web embedding, while the repository provides family-specific files and license information.

Adobe Fonts

Adobe Fonts is convenient for people with an active Creative Cloud subscription who work in Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere Pro, or other Adobe applications. Adobe describes commercial coverage for many design, website, PDF, video, and broadcast uses, subject to its service and font-specific terms.

It is a poor fit when you need independent font-file redistribution, long-term self-hosting without a subscription, or guaranteed continued activation after ending Creative Cloud. Adobe distinguishes finished artwork from distributing the font files themselves.

Font Squirrel and Fontshare

Font Squirrel can help discover fonts advertised for commercial use, but inspect each family’s actual license. Fontshare offers another source of contemporary free typefaces; review each family’s current terms rather than assuming that every typeface has identical rights.

For high-value branding, also look for the type designer’s or foundry’s official website, GitHub repository, or download page. An authorized source is more reliable than an unfamiliar site hosting a supposedly free copy.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Calling every free font copyright-free.
  • Assuming every Google Font is OFL-licensed.
  • Trusting a directory filter without opening the license.
  • Using a personal-use, trial, donationware, or noncommercial font in paid work.
  • Confusing finished artwork with permission to redistribute font files.
  • Bundling a font in an app, game, ebook, or template without checking embedding terms.
  • Assuming universal language coverage.
  • Installing duplicate or outdated releases from different sources.
  • Assuming Adobe Fonts access is equivalent to owning a perpetual, independently distributable font license.
  • Modifying an OFL font without checking Reserved Font Name requirements.

Commercial-use checklist

Before publishing or delivering the work, confirm:

  • ☐ You have the exact font family, files, and version.
  • ☐ You downloaded it from an authorized source.
  • ☐ You read the included license.
  • ☐ The license permits your specific use: logo, website, print, social, video, PDF, template, app, game, or software.
  • ☐ You checked attribution, notice, and Reserved Font Name requirements.
  • ☐ You know whether font files may be modified, embedded, bundled, or redistributed.
  • ☐ You saved the license and source URL with the project.
  • ☐ You documented the font details for your client or team.

For a normal logo, painting, poster, website, packaging design, or social graphic, an appropriately licensed OFL font is usually the simplest route. For apps, editable templates, subscription fonts, high-value branding, or unusual redistribution, read the complete license and obtain professional advice where the financial or legal risk justifies it.
