The best cord for a bracelet depends on how it is made: use elastic for a clasp-free stretch bracelet, flexible beading wire for a strand finished with a clasp, and waxed cotton or hemp when visible cord and knots are part of the design. Before buying, check the smallest bead hole and how you plan to finish the bracelet.

Which cord works for a stretch bracelet?
Elastic cord is designed for clasp-free bracelets that stretch over the hand. Fire Mountain Gems and Beads lists its Powercord elastic in 0.5 mm, 0.8 mm, 1 mm, 1.5 mm, and 2 mm sizes in its Flexible Bracelet Stringing Materials guide. Choose a size that passes through the smallest bead hole; do not assume the thickest option is best if it will not fit or makes the bracelet difficult to string. Follow the cord maker’s directions for securing and finishing the ends.
When should you use beading wire?
For a beaded strand that closes with a clasp, choose flexible beading wire rather than stretch elastic. Fire Mountain recommends Accu-Flex as a flexible wire for bracelet stringing. Match the wire and finishing components to the beads and closure you intend to use; the cited guidance does not establish a single wire size or finishing method for every bracelet.

When is cord part of the design?
Waxed cotton and hemp
Waxed cotton and hemp are options for knotted or macramé bracelets where the cord remains visible. Their texture and appearance affect the finished design, so compare them for the look and flexibility you want, as well as the bracelet’s likely exposure to water. Nylon and braided beading thread
For fine beadwork or projects that call for stitching or knotting with thread, consider nylon or braided beading thread. Confirm that the thread can pass through the smallest bead hole and suits the technique. A general-purpose bracelet cord may not be the right choice for stitched beadwork.

Check bead holes before buying
Measure or check the smallest hole in the actual beads you plan to use, not just the largest or most common beads in the strand. Then compare that opening with the cord diameter and account for any additional passes required by your design. - For a clasped strand, get flexible beading wire and the findings and finishing supplies needed for the closure you have chosen.
- For a knotted or macramé design, choose waxed cotton or hemp in a texture and thickness that suit the pattern.
- For fine beadwork, choose nylon or braided thread appropriate to the stitching or knotting method.
