The best craft shears depend on what you cut: choose fabric shears for fabric, mixed-media scissors for varied craft materials, detail or appliqué scissors for tight cuts, and serrated-edge scissors when material tends to slip. There is no source-supported universal winner, and manufacturer descriptions are product guidance rather than independent comparative testing.
How to choose craft shears
Start with the material and the shape of the cut, then check the individual model’s edge, handle, handedness, and stated capacity. Those details matter more than a broad “craft” label.
- Material: Decide whether the scissors are dedicated to fabric or need to handle several materials.
- Cut: Longer blades suit longer, continuous cuts; smaller scissors offer more control for curves, small shapes, and trimming.
- Edge: Straight edges suit general cutting. A serrated edge may help grip material that shifts, such as vinyl.
- Fit: Check handle comfort and whether the model is suitable for your handedness. Confirm any layer capacity on the exact product page.

Fabric or dressmaker shears

Keep fabric scissors for fabric rather than using them on paper. OLFA advises separating paper-dedicated scissors from fabric scissors because paper dulls blades more quickly, which can help preserve fabric-cutting performance. Mixed-media scissors
If your projects move between materials, mixed-media scissors are a more suitable category than fabric-only shears. Fiskars’ selection guide describes scissors for combinations that include paper, multiple fabric layers, cardstock, chipboard, and fiberglass cloth. Detail and appliqué scissors
Small scissors are useful for intricate shapes, close curves, tight spaces, and thread trimming. OLFA’s SCS-4 precision appliqué scissors are one model-specific example: OLFA states that they accurately cut up to six layers of fabric. Serrated-edge scissors
When a material slides as you cut, serrations may provide extra grip. OLFA describes its serrated scissors as useful for materials such as vinyl because the edge helps grip material and reduce shifting. - Blade length and whether it suits detailed work or longer cuts.
- Whether the edge is straight or serrated.
- Handle comfort and suitability for your handedness.
- Any stated capacity, such as a specified number of fabric layers.
For painting-related DIY, consider whether the shears will cut fabric, paper patterns, vinyl, or a mixture of craft materials. Do not assume a pair suitable for one of those jobs is also specified for the others.
