For most interior trim and baseboards, choose paint made for doors and trim—often labeled enamel—and select satin or semi-gloss according to the look and cleaning needs you want. Check that the product suits the existing surface, and follow its preparation, primer, recoat, and cure instructions. No single brand can be called objectively best based on the manufacturer information available here; the practical choice is the product that fits your trim and project conditions.

What paint should you use on trim and baseboards?

Look for an interior paint specifically intended for doors, trim, or cabinets. Trim enamel is a common option; the label and technical data sheet should confirm that it is suitable for your substrate and intended interior use. A general wall paint is not automatically the right choice for trim.

As one product-specific example, Benjamin Moore describes its Coronado Door, Trim & Cabinet Enamel Semi-Gloss as intended for interior doors, trim, cabinets, and walls. The manufacturer’s technical sheet also describes repeated-washing durability. These are manufacturer claims, not results from an independent comparison.

Should trim paint be satin or semi-gloss?

Both are available as trim enamel finishes. Satin has a softer, less reflective appearance; semi-gloss reflects more light. More sheen can make surface irregularities easier to notice, so smooth and repair the trim rather than expecting the finish to conceal flaws. Choose based on the appearance you prefer and the product’s stated cleaning and wear properties.

Finish or product example What the manufacturer says What to consider
Coronado Door, Trim & Cabinet Enamel Satin 1203 Benjamin Moore’s technical sheet identifies it for interior doors, trim, cabinets, and walls, and specifies water cleanup. It reports 40 g/L VOC and an application surface-temperature range of 50–90°F. Optimum hardness and final sheen may take up to 30 days, depending on conditions. Manufacturer technical sheet. Consider it when you want a lower-reflectance trim finish. Check the current product directions for your surface and conditions.
Coronado Door, Trim & Cabinet Enamel Semi-Gloss 1204 Benjamin Moore’s technical sheet identifies it for interior doors, trim, cabinets, and walls, specifies water cleanup, and describes repeated-washing durability. It reports 42.1 g/L VOC and an application surface-temperature range of 50–90°F. Optimum hardness and final sheen may take up to 30 days, depending on conditions. Manufacturer technical sheet. Consider it when you prefer a more reflective finish; prepare the surface carefully because sheen can emphasize defects.
Sherwin-Williams SnapDry Sherwin-Williams says the product can be used inside and outside and can be touch-dry in as little as 1 hour. The product page is undated and was accessed October 7, 2026. Manufacturer product page. The touch-dry claim is specific to this product and is not a promise of full cure or readiness for every next step.
Behr Premium Plus Behr describes its satin finish as easy to clean and its semi-gloss as resistant to mildew, moisture, and wear. The product page calls the interior paint Zero VOC but also notes that emissions can continue after painting. Manufacturer product page. These are manufacturer descriptions; check the exact product label for trim suitability, substrate preparation, and application directions.

Product specifications are not category-wide rules: formulations, names, and directions can change. Confirm the current label and technical data sheet before buying or applying paint.

How much paint do you need, and when can you recoat?

Benjamin Moore & Co.’s 2022 Coronado Door, Trim & Cabinet sell sheet lists theoretical coverage of 400–450 sq. ft. per gallon at the recommended film thickness. It lists baseboards as an intended use. Actual coverage depends on the surface and application, so use the selected product’s current coverage guidance to estimate your project.

The same 2022 sell sheet lists satin as tack-free in 2 hours and ready to recoat in 4 hours at 77°F and 50% relative humidity. Those are product-specific conditions and figures, not a general schedule for trim paint. Dry-to-touch, recoat, and full-cure times are different milestones. Use the precise instructions for your paint and allow for temperature and humidity; Coronado’s technical sheets say cool temperatures and high humidity extend drying, recoat, and service times.

Do you need primer on trim before painting?

It depends on the existing coating, substrate, and problem areas. A sound, previously painted surface may not need the same primer as bare, glossy, oil-based, metal, or stain-prone trim. Select a primer compatible with the surface and topcoat, and follow the paint maker’s current instructions.

  • Glossy or oil-based existing paint: Clean and scuff-sand the surface; the Behr instructions suggest a stain-blocking primer over oil-based or glossy surfaces.
  • Metal: Behr advises priming metal; confirm primer compatibility with both the metal and finish paint.
  • Bare wood, stains, or filled defects: Use an appropriate primer where the product instructions call for it, including for bleeding wood or spot-priming around filled nail holes and cracks.

How to prepare trim and baseboards for painting

  1. Clean and dry the surface. Remove dirt, dust, grease, oil, soap, wax, and other contamination. The Coronado technical sheets also specify that surfaces should be free of mildew and water-soluble material.
  2. Remove failing paint and repair defects. Remove peeling or scaling paint, feather-sand the edges, and fill holes or cracks with a suitable repair material.
  3. Dull glossy areas and remove dust. Scuff-sand glossy surfaces as directed, then remove sanding dust before coating.
  4. Prime where the substrate or condition requires it. Use a primer suited to the surface and problem, such as metal, hard gloss, or potential wood stain bleed.
  5. Apply within the product’s stated conditions. The Coronado sheets caution against application below 50°F and specify a 50–90°F surface-temperature range. These limits apply to those products; check the selected paint’s own current label and technical sheet.

If old paint in an older home may contain lead, do not scrape or sand it without appropriate lead-safe controls. The Coronado technical sheets warn that disturbing old paint can create lead dust; consult applicable local lead-safe guidance before work.

How to choose the right product for your project

  • Start with the surface. Verify that the paint is for interior trim and compatible with wood, metal, or the existing coating.
  • Choose the sheen. Decide between satin and semi-gloss based on reflectivity, the condition of the trim, and the cleaning or wear claims made for the specific product.
  • Check preparation and cleanup. Confirm whether the surface needs primer and what cleanup method the product specifies. Coronado’s listed satin and semi-gloss enamels specify water cleanup.
  • Plan around the schedule. Compare product-specific recoat guidance with the project timeline, and distinguish touch-dry or tack-free from full cure.
  • Verify current documentation. Manufacturer specifications may change; use the latest label and technical data sheet for the can you are applying.
