For standard crayons, the clearest purpose-built option in the available product information is Elmer’s CrayonPro Electric Crayon Sharpener (model 1680). Its maker says it peels back the paper and sharpens the crayon automatically; that feature description is not an independent performance test. Before buying any sharpener, check that it fits your crayons—and check whether your Crayola box already has one built in.
What to look for in a crayon sharpener
Fit the sharpener to the crayon
Confirm that the opening is designed for the size and shape of your crayons. A claim that a sharpener works with standard crayons does not establish compatibility with jumbo, triangular, or ergonomic crayons. Kurtz Bros. lists crayon sharpeners as a category, but does not provide controlled fit or performance comparisons across models: Kurtz Bros..

Match the mechanism to how often you sharpen
For frequent shared use, an electric sharpener may be a convenient candidate; for occasional sharpening, a manual model may be sufficient. These are general category tradeoffs, not results from comparative testing. Manual sharpeners are described as quieter, while motorized models may make more noise and have larger receptacles. Check the specific model’s design and cleaning instructions rather than assuming all sharpeners behave alike.
Consider cleanup and replacement parts
Check how the shavings are collected and what cleaning the manufacturer recommends. If the sharpener uses replaceable cutters, verify the part number, compatibility, and current availability before relying on a replacement being easy to obtain.

A purpose-built electric option: Elmer’s CrayonPro 1680
The product page for the Elmer’s CrayonPro Electric Crayon Sharpener, model 1680 says it is for crayons and works with popular brands of standard crayons. It describes an automatic mechanism that peels back the paper and sharpens the crayon. The package includes a cleaning brush and one replacement blade cartridge, part 1681; additional cutters are sold separately.
Those are product-page claims, not independently verified results. The cited information does not establish sharpening speed, breakage rate, durability, noise level, or cost per use. Nor does the standard-crayon compatibility claim establish that the 1680 accepts jumbo or specialty shapes. Check the listing and manufacturer information for current fit and parts details before purchasing.

Check your crayon box before buying
Some Crayola boxes already include a built-in sharpener. Crayola says its 64-count box, introduced in 1958, was the first to include that design and that it continues to make the design in its 64- and 96-count packages. See Crayola’s crayon-box history FAQ. If you have one of those boxes, inspect it before purchasing a separate sharpener; the box feature may meet your needs.

Classroom pencil sharpeners are not automatically suitable for crayons. X-Acto describes hand-crank pencil sharpeners that can be wall-mounted or vacuum-mounted for school or home use, but that information does not establish crayon compatibility. See X-Acto’s sharpener overview.

How to choose
- Check what you own. Look for a built-in sharpener in your crayon box before buying another.
- Identify the crayon shape. Confirm that the sharpener accepts your exact size and shape, especially for jumbo, triangular, or ergonomic crayons.
- Choose manual or electric for your use. Consider how often and by how many people it will be used, along with noise, receptacle size, and cleanup.
- Confirm ongoing compatibility. For the CrayonPro 1680, check that any replacement cartridge is part 1681 and that a current listing matches the sharpener.
