For fabric, use a purpose-made manual fabric punch when the task is to make a hole; the available guidance does not establish that an ordinary power drill is safe or effective on cloth. If the material is leather, choose a leathercraft tool for the job: a stitching chisel or awl for hand-sewing holes, or a round punch for a single round hole. A sewing-machine needle is for stitching, not for making a larger opening.
First identify the material and the kind of hole you need
“Drilling through fabric” can mean several different things. The right method depends on whether you are working with textile or leather, whether you need one round opening or a line of hand-stitching holes, and whether the material will be pierced as part of machine sewing.
- Textile perforation: A manual fabric punch is a distinct tool category for perforating textile materials. The Getty Research Institute describes these punches as specialized tools, some with variable or adjustable sizes, but does not provide a selection chart for particular fabrics.
- Leather hand stitching: A stitching chisel or pricking iron makes a line of regularly spaced holes; an awl can pierce or prepare individual holes.
- One round hole in leather: A drive punch makes an individual round hole. A revolving punch offers multiple sizes.
- Machine sewing: Use a sewing-machine needle selected for the material and thread. The needle pierces as the machine stitches; it is not a substitute for a punch.
The sources describe these purpose-built manual tools and sewing needles, not power drilling through cloth. Do not assume an ordinary drill is an appropriate substitute.

Making a hole in textile fabric
A fabric punch is the tool category to consider when you specifically need to perforate textile material. Before choosing one, establish the fabric type and thickness, the intended hole size, and how the opening will be used. Getty’s Art & Architecture Thesaurus entry for fabric punches supports the category, including the existence of punches with adjustable sizes, but it does not say which design works for a particular weave, knit, thickness, or finish.
That distinction matters: the definition is not a tested recommendation for every textile. If you cannot identify a punch suited to your material and intended hole, do not treat the word “fabric punch” as proof that any punch will work. The cited guidance supplies no comparative performance results or fabric-specific instructions.

Preparing leather for hand stitching
Choose a stitching chisel or pricking iron for spaced stitch holes
For a line of hand-stitching holes in leather, Santa Clara University’s Maker Lab lists stitching chisels and pricking irons as tools for marking and punching the holes. George Fox University’s Maker Hub describes preparing leather for hand sewing with a stitching chisel or awl. Keep a chisel perpendicular to the leather so the holes line up on the reverse, and place a scrap wood block beneath the work when striking the chisel with a rawhide hammer, as George Fox recommends.

Use an awl for individual piercing or preparation
An awl is a leatherworking option for piercing or preparing individual holes. It serves a different purpose from a stitching chisel that produces a spaced line. Santa Clara University and George Fox University describe these tools in the context of leatherwork; their directions should not be generalized to delicate cloth.

Choose a round punch when the hole itself should be round
Colorado State University Extension distinguishes drive punches, used for individual round holes, from revolving punches, which provide multiple sizes. Its Leathercraft 4-H Manual recommends putting a cutting surface beneath the leather when punching. A round punch is not the same tool choice as a stitching chisel: decide whether you need a single round opening or regularly spaced holes for a seam.
Choosing a needle for machine sewing
Needle selection is a separate question from making a hole with a punch. New Mexico State University Cooperative Extension advises matching needle diameter to the fabric and thread, and identifies ballpoint needles for knits and wedge needles for leather. These are sewing-machine needle choices, not instructions for using a needle as a larger-hole punch. See NMSU’s Sewing Machine Maintenance guidance.
