The best digital art tablet depends on your computer, software, workspace and need for portability. First choose between a screenless pen tablet, a computer-connected pen display, and a standalone tablet computer; then compare models that fit that workflow. The products below are examples from 2024, not claims about what is newest or best in 2026.

Choose the device type first

Screenless pen tablets

A screenless pen tablet is an input device connected to a computer. You draw on its surface while watching a separate monitor, so it is not a self-contained art computer. It can suit someone who already owns a computer and display and wants a dedicated drawing surface without adding another screen.

WIRED’s 2024 guide included the Wacom Intuos M as a screenless example. Consider it as a dated model example, and check current availability and exact model details before buying. Read the WIRED 2024 drawing tablet guide.

Pen displays

A pen display lets you draw directly on its screen, but typically connects to a computer to run desktop art software. It may suit desk-based illustrators who prefer direct pen-on-image work, but it takes desk space and depends on the connected computer and required cables.

Examples in the 2024 sources include the Wacom Cintiq 22 and Wacom One 13 Touch. B&H describes the Cintiq 22 as a 22-inch pen display that connects by USB. Check the exact model generation, connection requirements and included accessories before purchase. See B&H’s drawing tablet guide.

Standalone tablet computers

A standalone tablet computer runs drawing apps itself, making it useful for portable work and other tasks. Its operating system determines which art apps are available, so it may not suit a workflow that depends on a particular desktop application.

WIRED’s 2024 examples included the Apple iPad Pro (2022) and Samsung Galaxy Tab S9+. Treat these as historical examples, not current rankings. Before buying, verify present availability, software support and the stylus compatible with the exact tablet model. Apple provides current references for iPad Pro technical specifications and Apple Pencil compatibility.

2024 product examples by workflow

Workflow 2024 example What to check
Computer-based drawing without a built-in screen Wacom Intuos M Whether you are comfortable looking at a separate monitor while drawing
Direct drawing at a desk Wacom Cintiq 22 Computer and USB connection requirements, desk footprint and included accessories
Smaller pen display Wacom One 13 Touch Current model generation and connection requirements
Portable iPad workflow Apple iPad Pro (2022) Current availability, app needs and compatible Pencil
Portable Android workflow Samsung Galaxy Tab S9+ Current availability, operating-system support and stylus details

These are source-backed examples from a 2024 buying guide, not a universal winner list. WIRED’s 2024 selections and B&H’s guide for creatives can help you compare options, but verify present product details with the manufacturer before ordering.

What to compare before buying

  1. Standalone or tethered: determine whether the device runs apps itself or needs a computer.
  2. Drawing surface: decide whether you want to draw on a built-in display or use a separate monitor.
  3. Workspace and portability: consider whether the device will stay on a desk, fit a compact workspace or travel with you.
  4. Software: confirm that the illustration, photo, animation or design apps you need are available for the device and operating system.
  5. Stylus compatibility: check the exact pen generation and supported tablet model in manufacturer documentation.
  6. Total setup cost: account for any computer, stand, cables, stylus or replacement nibs that are not included.

For pen displays, check the actual connection requirements rather than assuming one cable will work with every computer. For a standalone tablet, confirm that your preferred apps and stylus work with the specific model you are considering.

Does pressure sensitivity matter?

Pressure sensitivity lets supported software respond to how firmly you press, for example by varying a brush stroke. Specifications should be treated as product claims, not as a guarantee of how a pen feels in your hand.

Wacom’s December 2024 comparison brochure lists 8,192 pressure levels for several pen-display products, and B&H gives the same figure for the Cintiq 22’s Pro Pen 2. These are attributed product specifications, not independently measured performance results. See the December 2024 Wacom comparison brochure and B&H’s Cintiq 22 information.

  3. Check the exact model’s current availability, stylus compatibility and connection requirements.

  5. Compare the complete setup cost and make sure the device fits your workspace and portability needs.

Product generations, prices, bundles and compatibility can change. The 2024 models in this article are historical examples; consult current manufacturer information before treating any of them as a present-day buying recommendation.

FAQ

What is the difference between a pen tablet and a pen display?

A pen tablet has no built-in screen, so you draw on its surface while looking at a separate monitor. A pen display has a screen for direct pen-on-image drawing and typically connects to a computer.

Does a pen display work without a computer?

Pen displays typically connect to a computer to run desktop art software. Check the requirements for the exact model; a display is not necessarily a standalone computer.

Is a standalone tablet better for digital art?

It can be a better fit if portability and tablet-native apps matter most. A computer-connected device may suit you better if your work depends on desktop software. Compare your actual apps and workflow before choosing.

How do I know which stylus fits my tablet?

Check the manufacturer’s compatibility information for the exact tablet model and stylus generation. Do not assume that a pen works across every model in a product family.

Are the products in this guide the best tablets to buy now?

No. They are examples from 2024 research. Availability, model generations, prices and compatibility can change, so verify current details before buying.
