The right dip pen depends on what you want to write: choose a flat broad-edge nib for italic or Gothic lettering, a pointed nib for pressure-varied calligraphy, or a stub for a smaller flat-tip effect. A dip pen uses a separate, removable nib and ink, so check that the nib fits its holder and suits your ink and paper before buying.

How to choose a dip pen for writing
Unlike a fountain pen, a dip pen does not store ink in an internal reservoir. You dip its removable nib into separate ink, write until the ink runs low, then dip again. That simple setup makes nib shape the main choice: the nib’s edge and flexibility affect the marks you can make.

- Check the holder fit. Nibs and holders are not universally interchangeable. Confirm the shank and holder specifications for the exact pieces you plan to use.
- Consider paper, ink, and upkeep. Smooth paper helps practice strokes; ink compatibility depends on the nib and manufacturer’s instructions. Clean and dry the nib after writing.

Examples to consider—and what they do not prove
Art Noise presents Speedball C-series steel nibs as a budget example for broad-edge work and Hunt 101 for pointed-pen styles. It also names Brause and Leonardt as intermediate examples, and Gillott 404/303 as premium options. Those are the retailer guide’s recommendations, not results from a controlled product comparison.
The Pen Company notes that beginners may find it easier to buy a holder and nib sold together, while still advising buyers to check compatibility. Set up and use a dip pen
- Confirm the fit. Check the nib shank against the holder and follow the makers’ instructions for installation.
- Prepare smooth practice paper. Begin with simple strokes and a light touch; excessive pressure can make control difficult.
- Load the nib conservatively. Art Noise suggests beginning with a shallow dip of about one-third of the nib and tapping off excess ink. The Pen Company advises covering the reservoir opening without submerging the whole nib. Nib designs vary, so follow the specific maker’s guidance.
- Practice with the nib’s intended action. For broad-edge scripts, keep the edge angle consistent. With a pointed nib, practice light upstrokes and controlled pressure rather than forcing the nib.
- Clean and dry it after the session. Art Noise recommends rinsing the nib with water and storing it dry.
Ink, paper, and care
Dip pens can accommodate a wider range of inks than many fountain pens, including some pigmented, waterproof, or shellac inks, according to The Pen Company. That does not mean every ink works equally well with every nib: check the nib maker’s and ink maker’s instructions, especially for specialty formulations. Use smooth practice paper, and rinse and dry the nib after writing to help prevent residue from remaining on it.
What to buy first
For a first setup, look for a holder and nib sold as a compatible pair, or verify the fit of separate pieces before ordering. A “dip pen calligraphy starter set” is one way to search; check the listing itself for the included nibs, holder, and other contents, since those details vary. If you prefer to choose components separately, the relevant basics are a compatible holder, one or more replacement nibs suited to your script, appropriate ink, and smooth practice paper.

Choose the nib for the writing you want to do, not a headline claiming a universal winner. Broad edge, pointed, and stub nibs make different marks; fit and care matter just as much as the example model.
