There is no single best paint for every outdoor sign. Choose by sign material and application: a sign-specific enamel is a sensible starting point for hand-painted lettering; a professional acrylic polyurethane system may suit demanding architectural work; and wood, metal, plastic, or masonry signs need a coating explicitly approved for that surface. Before buying, check the exact product’s current technical data sheet and label for surface preparation, primer, application conditions, and safety directions.

An exterior label alone does not prove that a paint is suitable for every sign. Confirm that the specific product is approved for the substrate, and follow its directions for cleaning, preparation, primer, and application. Also account for how the paint will be applied: hand lettering, broad background coverage, and aerosol touch-ups may call for different products.

- Plastic: Check compatibility with the exact plastic type and any existing coating or printed layer; do not assume a general-purpose paint or lacquer will adhere safely.

Use a professional coating system for demanding architectural work
PPG describes Matthews Paint as an acrylic polyurethane sign-paint line used for architectural, commercial, amusement, and outdoor applications. Its professional positioning makes it a distinct route from a general-purpose DIY paint. The cited product information does not establish a service-life comparison against sign enamels, so select it based on project requirements and the manufacturer’s system guidance, not an assumed longevity advantage.

Take extra care with plastic signs
Plastic formulations vary, and compatibility can depend on the precise substrate and what is already on it. PPG describes Lacryl as a fade-resistant acrylic lacquer for plastic signs, including polycarbonate and acrylic; that is a product-specific description, not blanket approval for all plastics or lacquers. For other coatings, follow the surface-specific primer and compatibility advice. Dupli-Color, for example, recommends selecting primer for the surface and testing compatibility in an inconspicuous area.

Prepare and apply the paint using its own instructions
- Identify the substrate and existing finish. Determine whether the sign is wood, metal, plastic, or masonry, and whether it has an existing coating or printed layer.
- Confirm product approval. Read the current technical data sheet and label to verify that the exact paint is specified for that material and use.
- Follow the specified preparation and primer steps. Do not substitute a primer or assume that an exterior product needs no primer; requirements vary by surface and product.
- Check application conditions. Use the product’s temperature, humidity, coat, and cure directions. For example, Krylon’s 55–75°F and below-60% humidity guidance applies to OSHA Colors, not paints generally.
- Observe safety directions. Follow the label and safety documentation for handling and application.
- Verify clear-coat compatibility before adding one. Do not apply a generic clear coat unless the coating manufacturer confirms it is compatible with the underlying sign system.
