1. Procreate: best overall drawing app for iPad

Procreate is a versatile choice for iPad sketching, painting, lettering, illustration and short-form animation. Its compact interface keeps brush, layer and color controls close at hand without requiring users to navigate a desktop-style workspace.

The current iPad release is Procreate 5.4.12 and requires iPadOS 16.3 or later. Procreate is a one-time purchase rather than a subscription. Procreate’s FAQ lists the current version and requirements.

Useful Procreate paths

  • Actions: tap the wrench icon in the top menu.
  • Actions > Add > Add Text: insert editable text.
  • Actions > Canvas > Crop and Resize: change canvas dimensions or resolution.
  • Actions > Canvas > Animation Assist: open the animation timeline.
  • Actions > Canvas > Drawing Guide: enable grids, perspective and symmetry guides.
  • Actions > Share: export Procreate, JPG, TIFF, PSD, PDF, PNG, GIF or MP4 files.

Procreate is primarily a raster application, so it is not the best choice for artwork that must remain infinitely scalable and fully vector-editable. Available layer counts depend on canvas dimensions and iPad hardware; a large, high-resolution canvas can have fewer layers than a small sketch.

Text starts as vector text, but some editing operations require rasterizing it. In the Layers panel, tap the text layer and choose Rasterize. To preserve layers when importing a PSD, use Import from the Gallery. Inserting a PSD through Actions > Add > Insert a file into an open canvas flattens it.

2. Procreate Pocket: best drawing app for iPhone

Procreate Pocket is a separate app optimized for iPhone, not simply the iPad version scaled down to a phone. It includes customizable brushes, ColorDrop, QuickShape, warp transformations, adjustments, Animation Assist and time-lapse recording. It is a one-time purchase with no subscription. Procreate’s Pocket page describes its features.

Keep the product distinction in mind: buying Procreate for iPad does not mean you have bought Procreate Pocket for iPhone. They are separate apps.

Bopomofo Stylus(5 Pcs),2-in-1 Stylus Pen for Touchscreen,Capacitive Stylus
  • 【Stylus for Touch Screen】This stylus can be used on touch screen, designed to replace your fingers, the stylus can free up your fingers and provide higher sensitivity and response on the screen.
  • 【Capacitive stylus】This is a capacitive stylus (battery-free, requires no charging, and functions like a fingertip)—not an active stylus. It does not support pressure sensitivity or palm rejection. However, it allows for tapping, scrolling, note-taking, and drawing on touchscreens; if you require professional-grade drawing capabilities on an iPad, please choose an active stylus instead.
  • 【2-in-1 Stylus Pen】This stylus features two different tips: a flexible transparent disc tip and a rubber tip. Applying moderate pressure when using the rubber tip ensures full contact with the screen—especially on screens with protective films—thereby enabling stable signal transmission. The combination of the rubber tip and the disc tip offers two distinct touch experiences. Please note that the plastic piece on the transparent disc is an integral part of the tip and cannot be removed.
  • 【Works On Capacitive Touch Screens】Compatible with iPad, iPad Air/mini, iPhone, Samsung Galaxy Tab, Android tablets, Kindle and smartphones. Also works over most screen protectors — glide, no scratch. The stylus is used to replace your fingers on a touchscreen, Avoid rubbing your fingers and leaving fingerprints on touchscreen devices. If it cannot be used for writing on some devices, This may be due to limitations in the settings of touchscreen devices. • 【Multiple Usage Scenarios】Whether you are taking notes in class, reviewing documents at work, drawing creative designs, or enjoying mobile games, this universal stylus pen delivers a smooth and comfortable touch experience. 3. Adobe Fresco: best free painting app

Adobe Fresco combines three kinds of marks in one workspace:

  • Raster brushes with a Photoshop-like feel
  • Scalable vector brushes
  • Live Brushes that simulate watercolor and oil behavior

Fresco supports iPad, iPhone and Windows, and integrates with Adobe Creative Cloud. It is a good fit if your work moves between Adobe applications or you want both raster and vector brush workflows. The US App Store listing describes the free app and its Apple-device availability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Adobe’s current requirements for the iPhone and iPad release include iOS 17 or later and 5 GB of storage. Internet access may be needed for activation, subscription validation and online services. “Free” does not mean entirely independent of an Adobe account or the internet. See Adobe’s Fresco system requirements for details.

Fresco is not an Android option. Android users can consider Infinite Painter, Concepts, Clip Studio Paint or ibisPaint instead.

4. Infinite Painter: best Android-first painting workflow

Infinite Painter is a close fit for Android users seeking a focused, Procreate-like painting experience. It is also available on iPhone and iPad, and its free version lets you try the workflow before paying to unlock additional features. TechRadar’s 2025 drawing-app testing notes the free limited version and paid unlock.

It suits Android tablet owners who use a pressure-sensitive stylus and want a painting app rather than a general note-taking or design tool. The interface centers on brushes, layers, color and transforms.

Pricing and feature availability can differ between Android and iOS stores, and phone and tablet pricing may differ. Check the live listing on your device rather than relying on an old fixed price.

5. Concepts: best for infinite-canvas sketching and design

Concepts is a different kind of drawing app. Its strokes are vector-based, so you can select, move, scale and edit marks after drawing them. The infinite canvas makes it useful for product design, architecture, floor plans, storyboards, mind maps and visual exploration where the composition changes repeatedly. Concepts’ comparison with Procreate explains the distinction.

Concepts plans

Plan Reference features and price
Basics Free; infinite canvas, unlimited drawings and folders, five layers, grids, snapping, scaling and measurement
Essentials Listed at $39.99 one-time; adds selection and editing, infinite layers, custom brushes and stronger exports
Pro Listed at $4.99 per month or $29.99 per year; adds all features, packs, advanced transforms, PDF import and export, and cross-platform access

These are listed prices; store prices vary by region. The free plan is limited to five layers and JPG export. SVG, PSD, PDF and other advanced export features require a paid plan. Concepts’ pricing page lists current plan details.

For a fixed-size artwork rather than an endless planning board, open Settings > Workspace > Artboard. Two-finger dragging pans the canvas, and double-tapping the zoom value in the status bar returns to the canvas center if you lose your position.

6. Clip Studio Paint: best for comics, manga and animation

Choose Clip Studio Paint when you need comic panels, manga line art, webtoons, perspective, 3D references or animation. It is available on iPad, iPhone, Android, Chromebook, Windows and macOS, with DEBUT, PRO and EX editions. Clip Studio Paint’s manual describes its editions.

  • ⇛Compatible for all touch screens, Universal stylus, suitable for touch screen devices, A pen for all version of apple iPad/iPhone/iPod /iWatch, Samsung Galaxy Tab S7/A7, ChormeBook, Microsoft Surface, Fire HD 8 tablet, Fire HD 8 Kids Edition, Android Phone & Tablet, MatrixPad, Dragon Touch Notepad, Touch Screen Cell Phone etc

Kindly screw out the pen end, you can pour out the extra disc tip. Package also include one leather pen case for carry out.

Its depth is also a drawback: it has more panels, settings and edition differences than a casual sketchbook app, and mobile versions commonly involve plan choices rather than a simple one-time purchase.

On iPad and Android tablets, choose between:

  • Simple Mode: a reduced interface for drawing and painting.
  • Studio Mode: the full workspace with palettes, tools and command controls.

To switch modes, use Clip Studio logo menu > Switch to Simple Mode or top-right menu > Switch to Studio Mode. If the button is missing, open top-right menu > Preferences > Studio Mode/Simple Mode switch button. The tablet interface manual covers these options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For ordinary iPad painting, Procreate is quicker to learn. For multi-page comics, animation timelines or manga production, Clip Studio Paint is the more capable choice.

7. Krita: best free and open-source option

Krita offers professional brushes, stabilizers, layers, vector and filter layers, animation, onion skinning, PSD support, drawing assistants and color-management tools without a subscription or purchase price. See Krita’s feature list.

The Android version is still beta and intended for tablets and Chromebooks, not phones. Its desktop-derived interface can feel crowded on smaller displays. Desktop users will generally get the most complete Krita experience on Windows, macOS or Linux. Krita’s release notes describe the Android build.

If a stylus behaves incorrectly on Android, open Settings > Tablet Settings > Tablet Tester to check input. Xiaomi styluses may need the workaround that treats page-up/page-down keys as right- and middle-mouse buttons. See Krita’s tablet settings documentation.

8. ibisPaint X: best free phone and manga app

ibisPaint X is a practical choice for drawing on an Android phone or iPhone, especially for manga-style line work, coloring and social-media illustrations. It is also available on iPad. The free edition is supported by advertising and includes brushes and drawing tools. The official product page lists its mobile products.

The naming and payment options are easy to misread:

  • ibisPaint X: free edition with advertisements.
  • ibisPaint: separate paid app with ads removed.
  • Ad Removal Upgrade: a one-time purchase for ibisPaint X.
  • Premium Membership: recurring plan with extra tools and storage.

The official US comparison lists 64 MB of cloud storage for free ibisPaint X and 20 GB for Premium Membership. Premium features include unlimited vector-tool use, advanced vector features, animation of any size, premium filters and CMYK export. How to choose the right drawing app

  1. Start with the device. iPad users can compare Procreate, Fresco and Clip Studio Paint. Android phone users can consider Infinite Painter or ibisPaint X. Krita’s Android version is for tablets and Chromebooks, not phones.
  2. Decide whether your work is raster or vector. Digital painting and textured illustration suit Procreate, Fresco, Infinite Painter and Krita. Logos, diagrams and endlessly scalable planning sketches suit Concepts or a dedicated vector application.
  3. Check the payment model. Procreate and Procreate Pocket are one-time purchases. Fresco is listed as free. Concepts and Clip Studio Paint have multiple paid structures, while ibisPaint offers separate free, paid and membership products.
  4. Match the app to the finished file. If you need PSD, PDF, SVG, CMYK, animation or layered export, confirm that your chosen edition and plan include it before starting a large project.
  5. Test stylus support and canvas limits. Reliable pressure, palm rejection and enough layers for your usual canvas size matter. Increasing resolution can reduce Procreate’s available layer count.

Apps that are easy to misdescribe

  • Procreate is not available on Android. Procreate for iPad and Procreate Pocket for iPhone are separate products.
  • Adobe Fresco is listed as a free app, not subscription-only, though account and online-service requirements apply.
  • Krita’s Android build is beta and intended for tablets and Chromebooks, not a phone-first alternative.
  • Concepts is a vector-based infinite-canvas app, not a conventional raster sketchbook.
  • ibisPaint X and ibisPaint are separate listings with separate purchase entitlements.
  • Procreate is primarily raster-based, so it is not ideal for infinitely scalable logos.

FAQ

What is the best drawing app for an iPad in 2025?

Procreate is a strong general-purpose choice for most iPad artists. It combines a focused interface, brushes, layers, lettering, guides, animation tools and export support in a one-time purchase. Adobe Fresco may suit you better if you need Adobe integration or vector and Live Brushes.

What is the best free drawing app for a tablet or phone?

Adobe Fresco is a strong free option on iPhone and iPad, with raster, vector and Live Brushes. Android users can try Infinite Painter or ibisPaint X. Krita is a free, open-source choice for desktop and Android tablets, but its Android version is beta and not intended for phones.

Is Procreate available for Android phones?

No. Procreate’s mobile products are Procreate for iPad and the separate Procreate Pocket app for iPhone. Android users seeking a similar painting workflow can start with Infinite Painter.

Which drawing app is best for logos and scalable artwork?

Concepts is a strong choice for editable, vector-based sketching and design planning. Procreate is primarily raster-based, so it is better for painting and illustration than artwork that must remain infinitely scalable. For production logos, a dedicated vector design application may be more appropriate.
