You can build a collectible-monster character in ChatGPT Images without copying an existing franchise. The reliable approach is to design from traits—silhouette, anatomy, palette, habitat, personality, and powers—then refine one visual feature at a time. Treat the first generation as a concept sketch, not the finished painting.
For anything you plan to publish, describe the result as an original creature-collecting game concept or monster-game-inspired creature. Do not use Pokémon names, logos, characters, Poké Balls, or recognizable copied designs.
1. Open ChatGPT Images
In ChatGPT, start a chat, select More, then choose Images. Enter your prompt there, or describe the image in any normal conversation. ChatGPT Images 2.0 is available on the web, iOS, and Android across ChatGPT tiers.

If you are developing an illustration or painting, begin with a simple character portrait. A clean studio background makes the silhouette, markings, and color relationships easier to inspect before you place the creature in a scene.

2. Design the creature before writing the prompt
A vague instruction such as “make a cute monster” usually produces a generic result. Decide on a few concrete design constraints first:

Combining several unrelated references is safer and more distinctive than asking for a creature that resembles a particular famous character. Change the proportions, facial structure, markings, colors, and abilities until the design has its own visual logic.

3. Use a specific original prompt
OpenAI recommends describing the subject, action, setting, visual style, framing, lighting, and constraints. It also advises using generic or ownable designs and avoiding brand references and logos. Read OpenAI’s image-generation guidance.
Paste and adapt this prompt:
Create an original collectible monster for a fictional creature-collecting adventure game.
Creature name: Brambletusk
Elemental affinity: moss and static electricity
Body: a small, round mammal with oversized leaf-shaped ears, dark slate fur, pale green moss growing along its back, and one short ivory tusk
Personality: curious, brave, slightly mischievous
Pose: standing in a three-quarter view, alert and friendly
Style: polished original game concept art, clean silhouette, expressive face, soft cel shading, bright natural colors
Background: simple pale cream studio background
Do not include Pokémon, Nintendo, Game Freak, Poké Balls, existing Pokémon designs, logos, trademarks, copied characters, or text.
The useful structure is subject, action or pose, setting, visual style, framing, lighting, and restrictions. You do not have to use the sample name or creature; replace every part that does not fit your own concept.

4. Refine one feature per revision
Do not ask for a complete redesign after every generation. Large changes make the creature drift. Instead, preserve the approved design and alter one variable at a time, repeating the most important constraints because broad revisions can change other details. OpenAI’s image-generation guidance recommends small, targeted revisions.

For example:
Keep the same creature, silhouette, colors, pose, and background. Make the ears 20% smaller and give the creature a longer tail. Change nothing else.
Other useful revisions include:
Keep the composition unchanged, but make the colors less saturated.
Preserve the creature’s identity and markings. Show a front view, side view, and rear view in three separate panels.
Keep the same design. Create a clean creature reference sheet with the name, height, habitat, and three facial expressions.
For painters, a reference sheet is often more valuable than a dramatic final scene. It gives you a stable record of the body shape, pattern placement, and expression before you interpret the design in your own medium.
5. Edit a specific area
When only one detail is wrong, edit the image rather than regenerating the whole creature:
- Select the generated image.
- Open the editor and choose Select.
- Highlight the area to change.
- Describe the replacement in the text box.
- Choose Save and inspect the result.
The editor also includes Aspect ratio, Undo, Redo, and Cancel. You can sometimes describe a location directly in the conversation without using the selection tool. See the OpenAI Help Center for the current editor workflow.

Selection is not perfectly precise. An edit can alter pixels just outside the highlighted area, so check nearby eyes, markings, edges, and shadows after every change. If too much changes, select a smaller area and repeat the instruction with fewer requested modifications.
6. Generate views for a painting reference
Use the aspect-ratio control or state the desired format in the prompt:
- Create a square 1:1 character portrait.
- Create a wide 16:9 scene of the creature in its habitat.
- Create a vertical 9:16 image suitable for a phone wallpaper.
Changing the ratio regenerates the composition, so the pose and cropping may change. A square portrait is useful for a character card; a wide image gives you room for environmental studies; a vertical version suits a phone screen or poster. The OpenAI Help Center explains the aspect-ratio control.

7. Ask for a transparent background
For a cutout reference or compositing workflow, use an explicit instruction:
Keep the creature exactly as designed and remove the background. Make the background transparent. Do not add a shadow, border, text, or extra objects.
Check the resulting file for pale halos, stray shadows, or background-colored pixels around fur, ears, and thin appendages. Transparency is especially worth checking before importing the image into a layout or using it as a reference layer. The OpenAI Help Center describes image-generation features.
8. Add lettering only after the artwork is stable
Once the creature itself is approved, you can try a card or encyclopedia entry:
Turn this into a fictional creature encyclopedia card. Add only:
“BRAMBLETUSK”
“MOSS / STATIC”
“HEIGHT: 0.6 M”
Do not add any other words or symbols. Use a clean bold sans-serif font.

Put required wording in quotation marks or uppercase, specify its placement, and spell unusual names clearly. AI-generated lettering can still be misspelled, duplicated, or replaced with invented symbols. If the name must be exact, create the image without text and add the typography in an image editor or layout program. OpenAI’s image-generation guidance recommends explicit text instructions; dense text layouts may still need polishing in a design application.
9. Keep the creature consistent across images
For a sequence of poses, upload one approved image as the design reference. Then identify the features that must not change:
Use the uploaded image as the exact design reference for Brambletusk. Preserve its face, ear shape, moss pattern, tusk, colors, proportions, and markings. Show it leaping over a shallow stream at sunrise. No new accessories and no text.

A later generation may still change the face, proportions, colors, or markings. Repeating “preserve the identity and all existing markings” improves the result but does not guarantee pixel-perfect continuity. OpenAI’s guidance recommends clearly explaining how reference images relate to one another.

Images created in ChatGPT are saved under Images. Open an image to use:
- Copy to place it on the clipboard
- Save to download it
- Share to send it to another app
If you need to remove an image from My images, delete the conversation that created it. On the web, hover over the conversation title, select the ••• menu, and choose Delete. See the OpenAI Help Center instructions.
Save more than the final PNG if the design matters. Keep your written character notes, sketches, prompt revisions, discarded versions, selected alternatives, compositing files, paintovers, and final edits. Those records show where your creative decisions entered the work.

This is not a substitute for legal advice, but the practical approach is clear:
- Do not prompt for “a new Pokémon,” a named Pokémon, or a specific franchise design.
- Do not include Pokémon, Nintendo, Game Freak, Poké Balls, logos, or trademarked project associations.
- If the result resembles an existing character, discard it or redesign the silhouette, face, palette, markings, accessories, and abilities.
- Do not market the result as “official Pokémon,” “new Pokémon,” “from the Pokémon universe,” or “Pokémon-approved.”
- Describe it as an original creature-collecting RPG concept only when the design and branding are genuinely independent.
Pokémon Support says it cannot authorize use of Pokémon intellectual property, including its characters, names, and designs, and asks users not to use or associate that material with a project. Starting from original design properties is therefore better both creatively and commercially. Read Pokémon Support’s guidance.

Can I ask ChatGPT to make a new Pokémon?
You should not. Create an independent creature using original traits and avoid Pokémon names, characters, logos, Poké Balls, and recognizable franchise designs.
How do I keep the same AI creature in several images?
Upload one approved reference image, identify the features that must remain unchanged, and describe only the new pose, expression, or setting. Consistency can improve but is not guaranteed.
Can ChatGPT Images make a transparent background?
