The best Sherwin-Williams gray exterior paint depends on more than the color name. Your roof, brick or stone, natural light, siding, trim, and the job the color must perform all affect the result. For most homes, Agreeable Gray SW 7029 is the safest warm-neutral starting point. Repose Gray SW 7015 is a lighter, more adaptable choice; Mindful Gray SW 7016 offers a balanced medium depth; and Gauntlet Gray SW 7019 or Peppercorn SW 7674 create a deeper architectural accent.

Quick comparison: Sherwin-Williams gray exterior colors
| Color | Visual role | Undertone direction | Best use | Watch out for |

| Repose Gray SW 7015 | Light, adaptable gray | Warm, but capable of reading slightly cool | Light exterior body color and mixed materials | May look pale in bright sun or cooler in shade |
| Mindful Gray SW 7016 | Balanced medium gray | Warm-neutral | Body color when Repose Gray feels too light | Test against strongly blue or yellow materials |
| Dorian Gray SW 7017 | Deeper warm gray or greige | Brown warmth | Grounded traditional, transitional, or contemporary exteriors | Can feel heavy on a dark, shaded elevation |
| Gauntlet Gray SW 7019 | Deep warm gray | Warm greige | Gables, shutters, garage doors, and dramatic body color | May be substantially darker than expected in shade |
| Light French Gray SW 0055 | Cleaner, cooler gray candidate | Verify with a sample | Homes that support a less beige-looking gray | Do not choose it from a screen alone |

| Worldly Gray SW 7043 | Warm neutral gray | Test rather than assume | A softer alternative to a stark cool gray | Its appearance is highly dependent on fixed materials |
Sherwin-Williams’ official popular-color resource includes Agreeable Gray, Repose Gray, Dorian Gray, Gauntlet Gray, Mindful Gray, Worldly Gray, and Light French Gray as interior/exterior colors. That resource is based on 2020 rankings, so it is useful as an official popularity reference—not as a current 2026 ranking or guarantee that a color is right for your house.

- Ready to use, pre-mixed door and trim paint offers a fresh new look on interior or exterior metal, wood and fiberglass
- Water-based paint formula emits less odor and withstands fading for a long lasting finish

- Durable, chip resistant coating provides ultimate protection with modern curb appeal
- Beautiful satin door paint is available in 6 pre-mix color options for the perfect look
1. Agreeable Gray SW 7029: the safest warm greige
Agreeable Gray is the strongest all-around starting point for a gray exterior. Sherwin-Williams describes it as a best-selling color with a beige undertone and subtle warmth. That warmth helps it sit comfortably beside cream trim, warm stone, brick, wood, and established landscaping.
It is a particularly practical choice when you want the house to feel welcoming rather than stark. On a north-facing or overcast elevation, its gray side may become more noticeable. In warm afternoon sun, it can read more beige. That shift is a practical consequence of its documented beige direction and changing exterior light—not a promise that every house will show the same result.

However, place those combinations beside your roof, brick, and stone before committing. A white that looks crisp on a color card can appear too bright against warm masonry.
2. Repose Gray SW 7015: the best light, adaptable gray
Choose Repose Gray when you want a light gray without going all the way to off-white. Sherwin-Williams characterizes it as a versatile neutral with a warm undertone that can still appear slightly cool. That makes it useful for homes with a mixture of warm and cool exterior materials.
Repose Gray is often a good bridge between a warm roof or brick foundation and cooler stone, metal, or painted trim. Bright sunlight can make a light exterior gray look paler, while a shaded elevation can make it appear deeper or cooler. Test it on more than one side of the house before deciding whether it has enough visual weight.
It is also a useful reference color when comparing the rest of this list: Mindful Gray is a deeper step, while Agreeable Gray generally offers more obvious beige warmth.

Mindful Gray is the middle-ground option. It is deeper than Repose Gray without moving as far into the brown-influenced depth of Dorian Gray or the drama of Gauntlet Gray.
Sherwin-Williams includes Mindful Gray in its Renew palette of warm grays, alongside colors such as Dorian Gray, Agreeable Gray, Anew Gray, Modern Gray, and Colonnade Gray. That makes it a logical choice for homeowners who want a coordinated warm-neutral exterior scheme rather than a sharply cool gray.

- Ready to use, pre-mixed door and trim paint offers a fresh new look on interior or exterior metal, wood and fiberglass
- Water-based paint formula emits less odor and withstands fading for a long lasting finish
- Dries to the touch in 45 minutes, up to 3X faster than traditional oil-based paints
- Durable, chip resistant coating provides ultimate protection with modern curb appeal
- Beautiful satin door paint is available in 6 pre-mix color options for the perfect look
Use Mindful Gray for traditional, transitional, and contemporary homes when the roof and masonry do not strongly pull blue or yellow. It can serve as a whole-house body color, with a lighter trim and a darker door or garage door. If your home is heavily shaded, compare it directly with Dorian Gray outdoors; the difference in perceived depth may be larger than it appears indoors.
4. Dorian Gray SW 7017: a grounded gray with brown influence
Dorian Gray is a deeper, warmer gray with brown undertones. It is better described as a warm gray or greige than as a blue-gray. That brown influence can help it coexist with natural stone, wood, dark roofing, and warm white trim.

It can also define architectural elements such as gables, dormers, or a garage while a lighter gray covers the main siding.
Because Dorian Gray has more depth, inspect it on the shadiest elevation. A color that looks substantial and elegant in full sun can appear considerably heavier beneath deep porch roofs or dense trees.
5. Gauntlet Gray SW 7019: a deep warm gray for contrast
Gauntlet Gray is one of the best Sherwin-Williams choices for a deep, warm exterior gray. Sherwin-Williams describes it as a striking dark gray with a warm greige undertone and shows it in a home-exterior example. The company lists Repose Gray SW 7015 and Eider White SW 7014 among its coordinating colors.
Gauntlet Gray can create a grounded, substantial look on a larger home with sufficient natural light. It is especially effective on gables, shutters, garage doors, porch elements, and other areas where a dark architectural contrast is intended.
Using it over the entire exterior requires more caution. On a small facade or a heavily shaded elevation, it may look much darker than the sample suggests. Test several sides of the home and assess the color alongside the roof and foundation before using it as the primary body color.
6. Light French Gray SW 0055: a cleaner gray alternative
Light French Gray is worth considering when you want a gray that does not lean as obviously beige. Sherwin-Williams includes it among its trending colors and identifies it as an exterior-capable color in its popular-color resource.
Rank #3
- Use for a variety of indoor and outdoor project surfaces including wood, metal, plaster, masonry or unglazed ceramic
- Water-based acrylic formula is low odor, resist chips and provides long-lasting protection
- Covers up to 120 sq ft and dries to touch in 30 minutes for quick project completion
- Semi-gloss finish minimizes surface imperfections, goes on smoothly and provides excellent hide
- Prior to application sand surfaces with 180/200 grit sandpaper, then wash with a degreaser, allow the surface to dry and apply paint
The available information here does not support assigning it a precise universal undertone, and exterior light can change its appearance substantially. Treat it as a candidate for homes whose roof, stone, brick, and surrounding light support a cleaner gray. Test it next to the fixed materials rather than choosing it because it looks neutral on a digital display.
7. Peppercorn SW 7674: a dramatic charcoal accent
Peppercorn is usually most successful as an accent rather than an automatic whole-house color. Sherwin-Williams describes it as a rich, dark gray that becomes more dramatic beside crisp whites.

Consider Peppercorn for a front door, shutters, garage door, gables, porch ceilings, trim, or other architectural details. It can also support a deliberately dark modern exterior when the home has strong natural light and the design includes enough contrast.
Before using it across all the siding, examine the home’s scale and exposure. Dark colors visually command attention, and a small or shaded facade can lose definition if the body color, trim, and roof are all too close in value.
8. Worldly Gray SW 7043: a warm-neutral alternative
Worldly Gray is an additional warm-neutral option for homeowners who want something softer than a stark cool gray. It appears in Sherwin-Williams’ official popular-color list as an interior/exterior color.
Because the source information does not provide detailed exterior-specific undertone guidance for Worldly Gray, the responsible approach is to sample it rather than make a universal prediction. Compare it with your roof, masonry, concrete, and trim in both sun and shade. It may be a useful alternative when Agreeable Gray feels too beige or when a cooler gray feels too crisp.
How to choose the right gray for your exterior
Start with fixed materials—not the paint deck
Examine the roof, brick, stone, concrete, metal, gutters, windows, and permanent landscaping first. These elements will remain visible after painting and can pull a gray in an unexpected direction.
A gray that appears neutral by itself may look blue beside warm brick. The same color may look beige beside a cool roof or blue-gray stone. Identify the dominant cast of the fixed materials, then choose a sample that works with them rather than trying to make every material match perfectly.

Decide whether the color is for the body or an accent
Light and medium grays are generally easier to use across an entire facade because they provide more visual flexibility. Deep grays such as Gauntlet Gray and Peppercorn can be more effective on selected features:
- Shutters and front doors
- Garage doors
- Gables and dormers
- Porch columns and architectural trim
- Foundation walls or lower-level details
A deep color is not automatically wrong as a body color, but the home’s scale, exposure, roof, and design need to support it.
Evaluate every important exposure
View the samples in morning light, afternoon light, bright sun, cloud cover, and shade. North-facing elevations may appear cooler or deeper than sunlit walls; bright sun can wash out light colors; warm late-day light can emphasize beige or brown influence.
This is a practical evaluation method, not a claim that Sherwin-Williams has tested each color under every possible exposure. Your own house is the relevant test environment.
Check neighborhood rules
Before ordering paint, review your homeowners association or local neighborhood guidelines. Sherwin-Williams’ color-exploration guidance also directs homeowners to consider HOA color restrictions. Some communities limit body colors, trim contrast, or dark roof-and-wall combinations.
Trim and accent combinations
Trim should be selected in relation to the gray, roof, windows, and masonry—not in isolation. Sherwin-Williams’ official coordinating information identifies several lighter colors that may work with these gray families:
- Extra White SW 7006: a crisp option to create clear contrast with Agreeable Gray.
- Incredible White SW 7028: a softer light partner listed with Agreeable Gray.
- Eider White SW 7014: listed as a coordinating color for Gauntlet Gray.
Use these as starting points, not guaranteed pairings. If your brick is strongly warm, a very crisp white may look disconnected. If your roof and stone are cool, a warm white may appear yellow. Paint a large enough sample area that includes the trim, siding, and nearby masonry so you can evaluate the relationship rather than isolated swatches.
How to test an exterior gray before buying gallons
- Buy or create physical samples. Digital color representations can differ from the actual coating. Sherwin-Williams recommends viewing a physical sample before confirming a color. Peel-and-stick paint samples can make it easier to compare multiple colors without coating the wall, but they are for visual evaluation—not proof of how the final whole-house paint system will look.
- Test more than one color. Place your leading options together, such as Agreeable Gray, Repose Gray, and Mindful Gray, or Mindful Gray, Dorian Gray, and Gauntlet Gray. Seeing the progression of depth is more useful than viewing one sample alone.
- Use several elevations. Test the front, side, and shadiest visible wall. Include areas near brick, stone, rooflines, windows, and trim.
- Observe the samples over time. Check them in morning and afternoon light, on sunny and cloudy days, and from the street. A small card viewed indoors cannot show how the color will read at curb distance.
- Assess the complete scheme. Look at the body color with the roof, gutters, windows, foundation, front door, and landscape. The goal is not for every element to be the same temperature; it is for the combination to feel intentional.
- Confirm the product and sheen. The same color can appear different in different coatings and sheens. Confirm the exact exterior product, finish, and color before purchase.
Exterior coating and sheen: color is only part of the result
Sherwin-Williams’ Emerald Rain Refresh Exterior Acrylic Latex is one premium exterior coating option. The product is marketed with self-cleaning technology, UV and weather protection, VinylSafe color capability, and a lifetime limited warranty. Listed sheens include flat, satin, and gloss.
Best Value
- Use for a variety of indoor and outdoor project surfaces including wood, metal, plaster, masonry or unglazed ceramic
- Water-based acrylic formula is low odor, resist chips and provides long-lasting protection
- Covers up to 120 sq ft and dries to touch in 30 minutes for quick project completion
- Flat finish provides a fresh new look for surfaces, goes on smoothly and provides excellent hide
- Prior to application sand surfaces with 180/200 grit sandpaper, then wash with a degreaser, allow the surface to dry and apply paint
That does not make it automatically the best paint for every home. Product selection should account for the substrate, existing coating, exposure, budget, local availability, and the product label. Warranty language is not a guarantee that every project will have identical performance; proper preparation and application remain essential.
In general, Sherwin-Williams describes flat as useful for minimizing the appearance of surface imperfections. Gloss is intended for durable areas such as windows and doors, where added reflectivity can highlight details. Satin may provide a practical balance for some exterior surfaces, but follow the selected product’s label and the recommendations for your specific substrate.
Exterior preparation and application checklist
Even the right gray can fail visually if the surface is dirty, unsound, or poorly prepared. Sherwin-Williams says the surface should be dry and sound, with mildew, oil, dust, dirt, loose rust, peeling paint, and other contamination removed for adhesion. Its contractor guidance states that inadequate preparation can account for up to 80% of coating failures.
- Clean the substrate: Remove dirt, dust, mildew, oil, chalk, loose rust, and other contamination using methods appropriate for the surface.
- Let it dry: Do not paint over a damp substrate or assume that a surface is dry simply because the rain has stopped.
- Remove failing paint: Scrape and prepare peeling or loose areas. Feather rough edges where appropriate.
- Repair defects: Address cracks, holes, damaged wood, failed caulk, and other defects before painting.
- Prime when required: Use the primer specified for the substrate, exposed areas, stains, or selected coating system.
- Check the weather window: Avoid exterior painting immediately after rain, during fog, when rain is predicted, or below 50°F unless the chosen coating is specifically rated for lower temperatures.
- Follow the label: Confirm surface preparation, application temperature, recoat timing, spread rate, and cleanup instructions for the exact product.
- Test an inconspicuous area: Check adhesion, coverage, sheen, and appearance before proceeding across the full exterior.
These precautions do not guarantee longevity, but they reduce avoidable problems and help ensure that the color you selected is judged on the actual coating rather than on an unstable surface.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the most popular Sherwin-Williams gray for an exterior?
Agreeable Gray SW 7029 is the best broad-use starting point in this shortlist and is described by Sherwin-Williams as a best-selling color. Sherwin-Williams’ popular-color resource is based on 2020 rankings, however, so it should not be presented as a current 2026 popularity ranking.
Is Agreeable Gray too beige for an exterior?
It can look beige in warm afternoon light because Sherwin-Williams identifies a beige undertone. It may read grayer in overcast or cooler conditions. Test it beside your roof, brick, stone, and trim before deciding.
Which Sherwin-Williams gray is best for a dark exterior accent?
Peppercorn SW 7674 is a dramatic charcoal choice for doors, shutters, garage doors, gables, and trim. Gauntlet Gray SW 7019 is another deep option and may be more suitable when you want a warm gray with greige influence.
Should I use a dark gray on the entire exterior?
You can, but the home’s scale, natural light, roof, and surrounding materials must support it. Gauntlet Gray or Peppercorn may look substantially darker on a small or shaded facade, so test multiple elevations first.
What sheen is best for exterior gray paint?
The correct sheen depends on the substrate, product, and desired appearance. Sherwin-Williams describes flat as useful for minimizing surface imperfections and gloss as a durable choice for areas such as windows and doors. Follow the label for the specific exterior coating.
The Bottom Line
Start with Agreeable Gray SW 7029 if you want the most forgiving warm-neutral direction, Repose Gray SW 7015 for a lighter adaptable exterior, Mindful Gray SW 7016 for a balanced medium gray, or Gauntlet Gray SW 7019 and Peppercorn SW 7674 for deeper contrast. The final choice should be made with physical samples on several elevations, next to the roof and masonry, after checking local color restrictions and the coating manufacturer’s preparation requirements.
