Cotton is a reliable starting point for everyday heat transfer vinyl (HTV) projects. Polyester and cotton-poly blends are also supported by many common products. Nylon and stretchy activewear require more careful matching: choose an HTV whose manufacturer explicitly lists the fabric, then follow that product’s pressing instructions. No fabric name guarantees success across every brand, finish, or garment, so test an inconspicuous sample when in doubt.
Which fabrics work best with heat transfer vinyl?
The right choice depends on both the textile and the specific HTV. Siser lists 100% cotton, polyester, and cotton-poly blends for its EasyWeed and EasyWeed Extra products. Those materials make practical options for many shirts, totes, and other common projects, provided you use the instructions for the product you bought.

How to choose HTV for the fabric
Start with the fiber content
Read the garment label rather than relying only on its appearance or product category. A “performance” shirt may contain different fiber proportions from another shirt sold under the same description. For mixed-fiber fabrics, Stahls recommends choosing material based on the highest fiber content, but the HTV maker’s own compatibility list should guide the final choice.
Account for stretch, weight, and intended use
Fabric type is only one selection factor. Stahls identifies durability, flexibility or weight, and fabric type as considerations when choosing heat-transfer material. For activewear that needs to stretch, Cricut positions SportFlex as a lightweight option made to flex with the garment; its stated restriction on high-cotton blends makes checking the fiber ratio especially important.

Treat coatings and unusual surfaces as separate cases
Two fabrics made from the same fiber can behave differently because of their weave, dye, coating, or finish. Stahls’ Material/Fabric Selection Chart notes that textile combinations, weaves, coatings, and dyes vary, and recommends testing samples. This is particularly useful for coated garments, unusual blends, and specialty substrates.

There is no single temperature, pressure, or pressing time that applies to every HTV. Follow the instructions for the product in hand and use the manufacturer’s heat guide where available. For example, Siser’s EasyWeed Extra directions specify a heat press at 305°F/150°C with medium pressure for 10–15 seconds. They also call for preheating the garment for 2–3 seconds and covering the design with multipurpose paper or a heat-transfer cover sheet. Those values apply to EasyWeed Extra, not to HTV generally.

Cricut says its Autopress can be used with cotton, polyester, cotton-poly blends, wool, felt, nylon, silk, and more, and directs users to its Heat Guide for tested materials and project instructions. The broad list is not a substitute for checking that a particular iron-on product suits the particular fabric.

Prepare and care for the garment
- Cricut recommends pre-washing the fabric base without fabric softener.
- Wait 24 hours before washing an embellished item, following the directions for the specific iron-on and garment.
- For uncertain fabrics, test the intended HTV and application method on a sample before committing to the finished piece.
