The best free AI image generator in 2024 depended on the job. For most people making images in a browser, Ideogram 2.0 was the strongest all-round recommendation—particularly when the image needed readable words. But an Adobe user, an occasional ChatGPT user, a Canva designer, and a technically confident painter building a local reference workflow each had a better-fitting choice.

That positioning mattered most when an image was only one stop in a production process: generating an early concept, refining it in Photoshop, placing it in an InDesign layout, and handing the result into an established client or publishing workflow. For painters and illustrators, it could be a useful sketchboard for composition, light direction, prop studies, or editorial concepts before making the final work themselves.
Constraint: “designed to be commercially safe” is not a blanket legal clearance. Free Firefly access was allocation-based and changed over time. Review the applicable terms, the final output, and the rights or policy requirements of the place where the work will appear.
3. ChatGPT Free with DALL·E 3 — best for occasional, low-friction creation
On August 8, 2024, OpenAI began rolling out DALL·E 3 image creation to ChatGPT Free users. The stated allowance was up to two images a day. That is a meaningful limit, but it made ChatGPT a useful option for someone who already worked in a chat: describe an idea, refine the brief in conversation, and make a quick illustration, slide visual, greeting-card concept, or explanatory image.

How to get better images without relying on a “perfect” prompt
