GIMP is the best all-around free, open-source alternative to Corel PHOTO-PAINT for layers, masks, retouching, compositing, and everyday raster editing. It is not a one-for-one replacement: photographers will usually want darktable or RawTherapee for RAW development, while artists focused on painting and illustration may prefer Krita. For many photography workflows, the most complete setup is a RAW developer plus GIMP.
The right choice depends on what you use PHOTO-PAINT for. None of these applications guarantees full preservation of Corel’s CPT files, and GIMP’s color-management tools should not be mistaken for a native-CMYK production workflow.
Which alternative should you choose?
| Your main need | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Closest general-purpose bitmap editor | GIMP | Broad coverage of layers, masks, selections, retouching, compositing, and image export. |
| Digital painting, illustration, or stylus work | Krita | Its brush and painting workflow is the standout strength. |
| RAW development plus photo organization | darktable | Designed around a non-destructive photography workflow and image-library management. |
| Detailed, technical RAW processing | RawTherapee | Offers extensive control over RAW conversion and image detail. |
| RAW photography plus pixel-level finishing | darktable or RawTherapee + GIMP | Combines RAW development with a layer-based raster editor. |
| Editable CPT projects or CorelDRAW handoff | Keep PHOTO-PAINT for those projects | Conversion may discard application-specific editability. |
These programs are not interchangeable. GIMP is the closest match for PHOTO-PAINT’s general bitmap-editing role; Krita is a painting-first application, and darktable and RawTherapee are primarily RAW photography tools.

What PHOTO-PAINT does—and what a replacement has to cover
Corel PHOTO-PAINT is a bitmap editor included with CorelDRAW Graphics Suite. Corel describes tools for retouching, masks and selections, color correction, painting, effects, typography, and output, alongside integration with the broader CorelDRAW environment. Its product page also promotes current AI-assisted features; the 2026 product announcement describes AI features including background removal and image-generation tools.
Replacing the bitmap editor does not replace the rest of that ecosystem. If your work depends on CorelDRAW handoff, shared assets, or editable CPT files, include those dependencies in your decision—not just the tools you use to retouch a JPEG.
1. GIMP: best overall replacement
GIMP is the strongest single-app choice for people who want to move everyday raster editing out of PHOTO-PAINT. It covers common layer-based work such as selections, masks, retouching, composites, color adjustments, filters, and exports, with plug-ins available to extend its capabilities. It is free and open source, and its official site describes color-management capabilities for digital and printed media.
For a former PHOTO-PAINT user, GIMP’s most important advantage is breadth: it can handle many routine jobs without requiring a separate application, from repairing a photograph to building a layered composite. It is also a useful finishing editor alongside a dedicated RAW developer.
Where GIMP is a good fit
- Layered retouching, image manipulation, and compositing
- Selections, masks, and common pixel-editing tasks
- RGB work for web, social media, and many general-purpose projects
- Finishing images developed in darktable or RawTherapee
- A cross-platform desktop workflow, subject to checking the current download for your system
Important limits
GIMP is not a dedicated RAW developer. For camera RAW files, use a workflow involving darktable, RawTherapee, or another compatible tool; GIMP’s official FAQ documents RAW integrations and color-management qualifications.

Be precise about CMYK. Soft-proofing an image or converting it for output is not the same as editing and preserving a native CMYK document throughout a press workflow. GIMP’s FAQ describes CMYK handling in terms of conversion to and from RGB as a storage format rather than a native CMYK editing workflow. If your job is press-critical, verify the precise ICC profile, export format, and printer requirements before replacing PHOTO-PAINT.
PSD support also does not guarantee perfect round-tripping. Layers or effects that rely on application-specific features may not transfer as editable elements. Treat CPT as an even greater compatibility risk: it is Corel’s format, not a dependable interchange format for other editors.

2. Krita: best for painting and illustration
Krita is a professional free and open-source painting program. It is the strongest choice here for brush-led work: digital painting, illustration, texture creation, painterly corrections, and tablet or stylus workflows. It can also work with layered raster images and common formats, so it may suit an artist who uses PHOTO-PAINT more as a canvas than as a photography tool.
Krita is not the universal answer for PHOTO-PAINT users. Its center of gravity is painting and creative artwork, not photo cataloging, RAW development, or a photography-first retouching workflow. A photographer who mainly corrects exposure, organizes shoots, or batches images is likely to be better served by darktable or RawTherapee, often with GIMP for detailed pixel edits.

Meanwhile, the ergonomic pen grip helps you avoid the strain that comes from hours of using a mouse.
Choose Krita if your most-used PHOTO-PAINT tools are brushes and painting tools, or if illustration and stylus support matter more than photo management.
3. darktable: best for RAW photography and image-library workflow
darktable is a photography workflow application and RAW developer, not a direct replacement for a layer-based bitmap editor. Its strengths include non-destructive image adjustments, photo organization, color management, and processing workflows suited to working through a collection of images. Its feature overview describes color management and GPU acceleration through OpenCL where supported.
In a non-destructive workflow, adjustments are kept separate from the original image rather than permanently painted into it. This makes darktable a natural starting point for RAW photographs and batch-oriented work. It is less suited to elaborate multi-image composites, typography, painting, or detailed manual retouching. Export a developed image and bring it into GIMP when you need extensive pixel-level finishing.
Choose darktable if you mean RAW development and photo-library workflow when you say “photo editor.” Pair it with GIMP if you also need PHOTO-PAINT-style compositing.
4. RawTherapee: best for technical RAW control
RawTherapee is another free, open-source RAW developer. Its official materials highlight a non-destructive workflow, a 32-bit floating-point processing engine, advanced demosaicing, HDR DNG support, and tools for detailed image correction. It is suited to photographers who want precise control over RAW conversion, detail, and color, and to batch-oriented development. The project’s GitHub repository provides project information and licensing details.

RawTherapee is not a general bitmap-compositing editor. It is not the right sole replacement if you need PHOTO-PAINT-style layers, painting, typography, or complex selections. A practical workflow is to develop a RAW file in RawTherapee, export a suitable intermediate such as TIFF, then use GIMP for retouching, compositing, or final pixel edits.
The RawTherapee site identifies version 5.12 as released on May 28, 2025, but that dated version information should not be treated as a guarantee that it is the latest release. Check the official download page for the current version and system support.
Choose RawTherapee if technical control over RAW development is your priority, and use a separate raster editor for finishing work.

Everyday bitmap editing: GIMP
Install GIMP, open a copy of your image, and do layered edits rather than changing the only original layer. Save the working project in GIMP’s native format, then export a separate delivery file in the format your recipient needs. Keep the untouched source so you can return to it if the edit or export does not meet requirements.
RAW photography: darktable or RawTherapee + GIMP
- Import or open the camera RAW files in darktable or RawTherapee.
- Make development adjustments such as exposure, white balance, color, lens, noise, and detail corrections.
- Export a high-quality intermediate suited to the next step.
- Open it in GIMP for cloning, healing, compositing, typography, or other detailed pixel edits.
- Export a delivery copy for web or print, retaining the editable working files.
Use darktable when an organized photography workflow and image-library management are important. Use RawTherapee when you prefer its technical RAW controls. Neither replaces every PHOTO-PAINT function by itself.

Painting and illustration: Krita
Keep painting, correction, and texture work on separate layers in Krita, then export a flattened copy for delivery while preserving the editable Krita project. If your artwork also needs extensive photo retouching or compositing, GIMP can fill that role; choose the application that best fits each stage rather than expecting one tool to excel at both.
Moving CPT and print projects safely
The biggest migration risk is often not whether a file opens, but whether it remains editable. Corel’s CPT documentation notes that CPT files can contain different bitmap color modes and may retain structures such as masks, floating objects, and lenses. Other application-specific effects or behavior may not translate when a project moves to another editor.
- Keep an untouched copy of every original CPT file. Do not make your only copy the test conversion.
- Choose an export based on the next use. A flattened PNG or TIFF can work for ordinary image use; a layered PSD may be useful for handoff, but test it in the receiving application.
- Inspect editability, not just appearance. Check layers, masks, effects, text, color mode, and any feature the project must preserve.
- Test a representative project. A simple image will not reveal losses in a complex file with masks, floating objects, or lenses.
- Retain PHOTO-PAINT where full Corel editability is required. An export can preserve the visible image while losing the structure needed for later editing.
Print work needs a separate check. Confirm the printer or production partner’s required color space, ICC profile, resolution, and file format. Soft-proofing, converting to a CMYK output, and editing a native CMYK document are different capabilities. Export a test file and confirm how the receiving workflow interprets its profile before migrating a production job.

Open-source software removes a license purchase from the equation, but switching can still mean learning new terminology and tool behavior, rebuilding shortcuts or presets, finding plug-in replacements, converting projects, and testing color and output workflows. Some current PHOTO-PAINT features—particularly Corel’s marketed AI-assisted tools—also do not have guaranteed feature-for-feature equivalents in these alternatives.
Before committing, try your own representative files and hardware. Check each project’s official download information for current operating-system support, and verify camera, graphics hardware, and tablet compatibility where they matter. A program that is free and open source can still be a poor fit if it disrupts a production workflow you depend on.
If full CPT compatibility, CorelDRAW integration, production continuity, or Corel’s current features are essential, retaining PHOTO-PAINT for those jobs may be more practical than migrating everything. The CorelDRAW Graphics Suite product page describes the broader bundle. That is a trade-off for users who need the Corel ecosystem—not an open-source alternative.
Bottom line
Start with GIMP if you want the closest all-purpose open-source replacement for PHOTO-PAINT. Choose Krita for painting and illustration, darktable for a photography workflow, and RawTherapee for hands-on RAW development. For many photographers, a RAW developer plus GIMP is the most realistic replacement. Keep original CPT files and validate CMYK and print output before moving production work.
