For fluid art, the best hair dryer is one that lets you direct gentle airflow and, ideally, has a cool setting and a low-speed option. No source establishes a winning dryer model or a universal setting. In a Dutch pour, air moves paint into blends and shapes; cells are associated with paint layers, silicone, or cell activator—not guaranteed by the dryer alone.
What to look for in a hair dryer
Choose for control rather than brand claims. The techniques described by Printex and an artist tutorial both use gentle or low airflow, while the tutorial warns that starting too close can send paint beyond the canvas. These are technique recommendations, not comparative tests of dryers.

Printex specifies cold air for its cell-activator method.
- Low-speed control: Printex calls for low speed in its method. A controllable, gentle stream makes it easier to move paint without carving deep furrows.
- Directional nozzle: A standard nozzle can direct the stream. Liquitex also lists a funnel attachment as an option for a hair dryer in Dutch pours.
- Fit for the project: Pick an air source you can guide across the work at the scale you paint. The sources provide no tested size thresholds or airflow measurements.
The available guidance does not compare models for airflow, temperature accuracy, durability, noise, or art-use safety certification, so it cannot support a brand ranking.
How to use airflow in a Dutch pour
Liquitex describes the Dutch pour as using air to move poured paint into soft blends and dramatic shapes. Air is a way to push and shape the paint, not a cell-making guarantee. Liquitex lists a hair dryer with funnel attachment, airbrush, canned air, straw, and air compressor as possible tools; it does not report a head-to-head comparison.

- Start gently and at a distance. Begin on low if your dryer offers it, and increase airflow only as needed to move the paint. In a 2018 tutorial, an artist describes this progression and cautions that starting too close can splatter paint beyond the canvas.
- Direct air where you want paint to travel. Use the stream to move paint outward and blend colors. Avoid treating one direction or distance as universal; the sources do not specify a measured setting or distance for all paints and canvases.
- Use the method-specific guidance when working with cell activator. Printex instructs artists using its cell-activator and pillow products to blow gently from the center toward the edge with a cold, low-speed dryer, preferably over the top layer without making deep furrows. Its instructions then describe stretching cells by spinning or allowing paint to flow.
The Printex procedure applies to its product method, not every Dutch pour. The artist tutorial is individual technique advice rather than controlled testing.
Does a hair dryer create cells?
Not reliably by itself. Airflow moves and reshapes paint; the cited sources connect cells with silicone or cell activator and with the way paint layers interact. Royal Talens says silicone can help separate color layers and create cells in acrylic pouring. Mont Marte discusses SuperCell or silicone oil in connection with cells, while recommending a straw or hair dryer to blow Dutch-pour paint outward.

Think of the dryer as a tool for distributing paint and influencing the pattern. Cell formation also depends on the materials and how they behave together, so a particular dryer setting cannot promise a particular cell result.
Paint consistency and medium matter
Paint fluidity affects how readily colors move when blown. Mont Marte notes that paint fluidity influences results, and Liquitex recommends experimenting with paint consistencies and fluid mediums rather than prescribing one universal recipe.

Pouring medium and cell activator have different jobs. Royal Talens describes pouring medium as making paint more fluid and self-levelling, while increasing paint-film flexibility to help prevent cracking. Silicone, by contrast, is associated with separating color layers and creating cells. The cited guidance does not establish a single ratio that works across products.

A hair dryer is one practical option, not a requirement. Liquitex lists airbrushes, canned air, straws, and air compressors alongside a dryer for moving paint in Dutch pours. Choose based on the direction and degree of control you want, what you already have, and the scale of the work. A funnel attachment is optional; no source establishes that it outperforms other approaches.
