Choose the print format first: Instax mini makes compact prints, SQUARE gives you a square frame, and Instax WIDE is twice as wide as mini. For a straightforward analog camera, the Fujifilm Instax mini 13 is a sensible starting point; for larger group or landscape pictures, look at the Instax WIDE 400. If you want to preview or select images before printing, consider a hybrid camera instead. There is no single best instant camera for every kind of photograph.
Start with the print you want
Instant cameras are tied to particular film formats, so choosing a camera also means choosing the shape and size of the prints you will keep. Fujifilm lists mini, SQUARE, and WIDE as separate film and camera families. Its WIDE format is twice as wide as mini, which can suit group shots and broader compositions; SQUARE is the choice for a square frame. See Fujifilm’s current camera lineup and film-format information for the models and film available in your market.
- Instax mini: compact prints and a broad choice of analog and hybrid cameras.
- Instax SQUARE: a square composition, with SQUARE-format cameras and film.
- Instax WIDE: a larger, landscape-friendly print; Fujifilm describes it as twice as wide as mini.
Polaroid Go is another compact analog option, but it uses its own film family. Do not assume Polaroid and Instax film—or different Instax formats—will fit one another.
Decide whether you want fully analog or hybrid
Analog: expose film as you take the picture
An analog instant camera exposes a sheet of film directly. You get the immediacy of a physical print, but there is no digital image selection step before the exposure. Fujifilm groups its analog models separately from hybrid cameras on its lineup page.

Hybrid: capture digitally and print selectively
Fujifilm’s hybrid cameras combine digital capture with instant printing, providing a different workflow from a camera that exposes film directly for every shot. That can be useful if you want to choose which images to print. Check the current model page for the features and format of a particular hybrid; the word “instant” alone does not mean every camera works the same way.
Which instant cameras suit different priorities?
| Camera or range | Best fit | What the manufacturer highlights |
| Fujifilm Instax mini 13 | Simple analog shooting and compact mini prints | Fujifilm’s U.S. product listing highlights simple operation, selfie mode, and a self-timer. These are manufacturer descriptions, not comparative test results. |
| Fujifilm Instax WIDE 400 | Larger prints, groups, and wider scenes | Fujifilm lists a self-timer, close-up lens, and camera-angle adjustment. It uses WIDE film. |
| Polaroid Go | A compact Polaroid analog camera with creative modes | Polaroid’s U.S. store describes its Go family as having a selfie mirror, self-timer, and double-exposure mode. It requires Go-format film. |
| Polaroid Now+ | More hands-on creative control | Polaroid positions the Now+ range as its advanced option, with features including aperture priority and remote controls. Check the specific model and app requirements before buying. |
These are options for different priorities, not a universal ranking. Fujifilm’s lineup and naming can vary by region; check the official product page for your country before relying on local availability or features. Fujifilm currently groups cameras under analog, hybrid, and digital categories, and lists the Pal 2 separately as a digital camera that does not use film.

- Wearable and take anywhere-able: As the Polaroid’s smallest instant camera, the Polaroid Go fits in almost every bag, tote, pocket and pack. So you can capture real life wherever, whenever.
- Takes clearer, brighter, even nicer pictures: Thanks to the large aperture range, precise light sensor and on-point-exposure settings, the Polaroid Go Generation 2 image quality is better than ever.
- Built-in selfie mirror: Say cheese to yourself in the Polaroid Go’s reflective viewfinder – aka ‘selfie mirror’.
- Double-exposure and self-timer modes: Take photos so nice you shot them twice with double-exposure mode. Or set up the perfect self-portrait with the touch of the self timer button.
- Shoots pocketable Polaroid Go film and shoots 15 film packs with a single charge.
Account for framing, selfies, and close-ups
A viewfinder does not always show exactly what the film will capture, especially at close range. The official Instax UK beginner guide warns that viewfinder framing may differ from the resulting image. This parallax is more noticeable when the subject is near, so leave a little extra room around it rather than framing tightly against the edge. For close-ups, use the camera’s close-up feature or lens as directed in its manual. Fujifilm’s UK guide distinguishes the WIDE 400’s close-up and larger-moment use from the hybrid features of the WIDE Evo: Instax UK beginner guide and product information.

Check film compatibility and what comes in the box
Film must match the camera’s format: mini film works with mini cameras and printers, SQUARE with SQUARE devices, and WIDE with WIDE cameras or the WIDE printer, according to Fujifilm’s film guidance. Before checkout, confirm the format on both the camera and film packaging. Fujifilm also says cameras do not come with film, so check whether a retailer’s bundle actually includes a pack—especially when buying a gift.
Work out the ongoing cost before choosing
The total cost is more than the camera price. Compare the camera, any film included in the box, the local price of compatible packs, and how often you expect to shoot. Film prices and bundles change by retailer and market, so a dated local listing is more useful than a general per-print estimate. If you expect to take many pictures, the cost and availability of the format you choose can matter as much as the camera’s initial price.

A quick decision path
- Choose the print: mini for compact prints, SQUARE for a square image, or WIDE for a print twice as wide as mini.
- Choose the workflow: analog for direct film exposure, or hybrid if digital capture and choosing images to print suit you better.
- Match features to use: consider the mini 13 for simple mini-format shooting, WIDE 400 for larger compositions, Polaroid Go for its compact analog format and listed modes, or Now+ for the additional controls Polaroid advertises.
- Verify the purchase: check the exact model, local availability, film format, and whether the box or bundle includes film.
For further model context, Digital Camera World’s 2026 instant-camera guide labels the mini 13 its budget recommendation, while Tom’s Guide’s instant-camera guide describes the mini 12 as an accessible point-and-shoot with limited controls and no digital storage. Rankings depend on each publication’s criteria; neither designation makes one model best for every reader.
