The Fujifilm Instax Mini 99 is an instant film camera that lets you shape a picture as it is made, using physical controls for color effects, brightness, and vignetting. Its six color effects come from LEDs inside the camera exposing the selected color onto instax mini film—not from applying a digital filter to a stored image. That makes the Mini 99 a camera for deliberate, in-camera choices; it does not offer the preview, undo, or editing flexibility of digital capture.
What makes the Instax Mini 99 different?
The Mini 99 puts creative adjustments in the exposure process. You choose a color effect and brightness setting on the camera, and can add a vignette with a manual switch. Fujifilm describes the color mechanism as internal LEDs exposing the chosen color onto the film. The effects are therefore part of the physical instant photograph, rather than editable overlays on a digital file. Fujifilm’s feature description is available on its Instax Mini 99 feature page.
This approach rewards deciding what you want before pressing the shutter. The trade-off is that the camera does not provide digital-style flexibility to preview, change, or remove an effect after capture. Fujifilm’s published specifications do not establish how consistently the effects render in different scenes, so the listed functions should not be treated as a guarantee of a particular look.

Other exposure controls and modes
Color effects work alongside five brightness settings and a manual vignette switch. The camera also provides Indoor, Sports, Double Exposure, and Bulb modes. Fujifilm describes Indoor mode as helping illuminate interior scenes and Sports mode as reducing blur from moving subjects; these are intended uses, not independently measured performance results.

Does the Instax Mini 99 use film?
Yes. It uses FUJIFILM instax mini instant film, which is sold separately. Each picture has an image area of 62 × 46 mm. After exposure, Fujifilm estimates development takes about 90 seconds; actual time varies with ambient temperature. These figures are manufacturer specifications on Fujifilm’s New Zealand specification page.
Because the Mini 99 makes a physical print rather than relying on a digital image library, film is an ongoing requirement. Fujifilm’s specifications do not state a current local film price or guarantee availability in every market.

The Mini 99 uses a retractable two-element 60 mm f/12.7 lens and automatic exposure. Instead of autofocus, you select one of three focus ranges, so choosing the appropriate range for your subject distance is part of taking the picture.
| Control or specification | What Fujifilm lists |

| Shutter speed | 1.8 seconds to 1/400 second outside Bulb mode |

The viewfinder is a 0.37× real-image type with macro parallax correction. A self-timer runs for about 10 seconds. The LCD indicates selected modes and remaining film; exposed film ejects automatically, and the camera has a tripod mount. What are the practical limits to plan around?
Film, power, and development
The camera takes one NP-70S battery. Fujifilm estimates approximately 10 instax mini film packs per battery, with actual capacity dependent on use. The maker’s estimate of about 90 seconds for film development also depends on ambient temperature. Neither figure is a guaranteed result for every shooting pattern or environment.
Choosing the Mini 99 over digital capture
The Mini 99’s analogue controls make the effect and print part of the act of taking a picture. In exchange, each exposure uses film, and the selected color treatment is exposed onto that film rather than preserved as a readily editable digital filter. The camera’s listed LCD is for mode and remaining-film information; the specifications do not describe a digital preview or a built-in way to save digital copies. Fujifilm’s instax UP! app scans prints for collecting and sharing, which is a separate scanning workflow rather than digital capture in the camera.

What this review can—and cannot—establish
Fujifilm’s published material establishes the camera’s mechanisms, modes, and listed specifications. It does not establish hands-on image quality, exposure consistency, durability, ease of use, current price, local stock, or value compared with other cameras.
