For most children, the Fujifilm Instax Mini 12 is the best instant camera to buy. Its automatic exposure, automatic flash adjustment, simple lens-twist close-up mode, selfie mirror, and automatic film ejection mean a beginner can take photographs without learning photographic settings first.
Choose the Polaroid Go Generation 3 instead if portability and selfies matter most, the Fujifilm Instax Mini Evo if you want to preview and save photos before printing, or the Kodak Mini Shot 3 Retro if your family specifically wants square prints and phone printing.
The most important distinction is that these cameras do not all work the same way. The Mini 12 and Polaroid Go are traditional analog instant cameras: every shutter press uses a sheet of film. The Mini Evo and Mini Shot 3 Retro are digital camera/printer hybrids, so they let you choose which images to print.

Best instant cameras for kids at a glance
| Camera | Best for | Print format and process | Main advantage | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fujifilm Instax Mini 12 | Most children and first-time users | Instax Mini analog film | Very simple automatic operation | Every shot consumes film |

| Fujifilm Instax Mini Evo | Children who dislike wasted film | Instax Mini film; digital camera and printer | Preview, save, edit, reprint, and print from a phone | More expensive and menu-heavy |
| Kodak Mini Shot 3 Retro | Square prints and phone printing | 3-by-3-inch dye-sublimation prints | Prints selected camera or smartphone photos | Heavier, app-dependent, and stock may be limited |
Prices and availability change, so they should not determine a permanent ranking. More important are the camera’s controls, consumable costs, print format, and how much supervision the child will need.
1. Fujifilm Instax Mini 12: best overall for most kids
Fujifilm Instax Mini 12 is the safest default recommendation for a child receiving a first instant camera. It removes most of the technical decisions that can make photography frustrating: the camera automatically adjusts exposure and flash brightness, and the child does not need to choose a shutter speed, aperture, or focus setting.
#1 Best Overall
- Compact and cute design. Easily twist the lens to turn on and off
- Built-in selfie mirror for easy selfies Close-up mode with parallax correction
- Features automatic exposure and flash control for bright photos that are not “washed-out”
- Prints out high-quality, 2” x 3” INSTAX MINI instant photos in approximately five seconds (Development time thereafter is approximately 90 seconds). Uses INSTAX MINI instant film, which is sold separately.
- Includes: Hand strap, user manual, (2) AA batteries and 1-year limited warranty
To use its close-up mode, the child twists the lens. The mode is designed for subjects approximately 30–50 cm away, and the built-in selfie mirror helps with framing. After the shutter is pressed, the exposed print ejects automatically. Fujifilm says the image develops in approximately 90 seconds, although development time varies with ambient temperature.
- Weight: 306 g without batteries, strap, or film.
- Dimensions: 104 mm × 66.6 mm × 122 mm.
- Power: two AA alkaline batteries.
- Film: Fujifilm Instax Mini film.
- Useful controls: automatic exposure, automatic flash adjustment, close-up mode, selfie mirror, film counter, and film-pack confirmation window.
The Mini 12 is particularly suitable for parties, holidays, family outings, and younger school-age children using it with adult supervision. Its controls are simple enough that a child can concentrate on choosing a subject and composing the frame.
The trade-off is the analog workflow. There is no preview screen and no way to cancel a badly framed shot. The flash fires automatically, with its brightness adjusted by the camera, so children cannot deliberately turn it off for a more natural-looking photograph. The image is also the small credit-card-style Instax Mini format, which is less useful than a square or wide print for large group portraits.
Explain before handing it over that the shutter is not a digital-camera button: one press uses one sheet of film. That small lesson prevents a child from rapidly emptying a film pack while experimenting.
2. Polaroid Go Generation 3: best small camera for older kids and selfies
Polaroid Go Generation 3 is the better choice for a tween or teenager who values portability, selfies, and the recognizable Polaroid-style analog experience. Polaroid describes it as its smallest instant analog camera. Its design includes a selfie mirror, self-timer, double-exposure mode, a stronger flash, and a lens intended to produce sharper, more zoomed-in selfies.
- Weight: 251.9 g without a film pack.
- Power: internal rechargeable lithium-ion battery.
- Lens: fixed focus.
- Included practical feature: wrist strap.
- Film: Polaroid Go film exclusively.
The small body is convenient in a jacket pocket or travel bag, and the self-timer makes it easier to include the photographer in a group picture. It is a good fit for a child who is likely to carry the camera around and take self-portraits rather than a very young beginner who needs the most obvious controls possible.
There are two important caveats. First, the prints are very small. That makes the camera highly portable but limits its usefulness for wall displays or large group shots. Second, Polaroid Go film is a proprietary format for this camera; standard Polaroid film and Instax Mini film are not substitutes.
Rank #2
- Wearable and take anywhere-able: As the Polaroid’s smallest instant camera, the Polaroid Go fits in almost every bag, tote, pocket and pack. So you can capture real life wherever, whenever.
- Takes clearer, brighter, even nicer pictures: Thanks to the large aperture range, precise light sensor and on-point-exposure settings, the Polaroid Go Generation 2 image quality is better than ever.
- Built-in selfie mirror: Say cheese to yourself in the Polaroid Go’s reflective viewfinder – aka ‘selfie mirror’.
- Double-exposure and self-timer modes: Take photos so nice you shot them twice with double-exposure mode. Or set up the perfect self-portrait with the touch of the self timer button.
- Shoots pocketable Polaroid Go film and shoots 15 film packs with a single charge.
The research identifies Generation 3 as the newest Go model and dates its launch to June 2, 2026. Because shopping results may continue to show older Generation 2 listings, check the exact generation before comparing prices or ordering accessories.
3. Fujifilm Instax Mini Evo: best for avoiding wasted film
Instax Mini Evo is not a purely analog camera. It is a digital camera that can print photographs onto Instax Mini film. That distinction makes it useful for children who become upset when a photograph comes out poorly or who tend to use film too quickly.
The Mini Evo has a 3-inch LCD screen, autofocus, a 2- or 10-second self-timer, 10 lens effects, and 10 film effects. It stores approximately 45 images internally, supports microSD and microSDHC cards, and includes Bluetooth smartphone functions. Fujifilm says it can print an image in approximately 16 seconds. Images in the print history can also be reprinted, and the camera can print selected photographs from a phone.
For a child, the practical workflow is straightforward:
- Take a photograph.
- Review it on the LCD.
- Print only the images worth keeping.
- Save digital copies or reprint a favorite later.
That workflow can substantially reduce accidental film waste compared with the Mini 12 or Polaroid Go. It also gives the child more creative control through effects and makes the camera useful for printing family photographs taken on a smartphone.
The cost of that flexibility is complexity. Menus, storage, effects, Bluetooth functions, and charging create more opportunities for confusion than the Mini 12’s lens-twist controls. The digital screen also changes the character of the activity: the child gets a preview and multiple chances rather than the one-shot anticipation of traditional instant film. Choose the Mini Evo for an older or more technically confident child, not simply because it has more features.
4. Kodak Mini Shot 3 Retro: best hybrid for square prints
Kodak Mini Shot 3 Retro combines a built-in digital camera with a Bluetooth photo printer. It is the strongest option in this group for families who specifically want square photographs and the ability to print selected smartphone images.

This format is more suitable than Instax Mini or Polaroid Go for a small scrapbook, refrigerator display, or square photo wall. Since it can print from a phone, parents can also use it as a compact family photo printer rather than limiting it to pictures taken by the child.
It is heavier than the Mini 12 and Polaroid Go Generation 3, and it needs charging plus Bluetooth/app involvement. The official Kodak product page showed the model as sold out during the research period, so check stock and return terms before buying. The same page displayed a small number of mixed customer reports, including mentions of jams and out-of-box problems. Those are user reports rather than independent testing, so they are a reason to check the retailer’s return policy—not proof that every unit is unreliable.
Which instant camera is right for your child?
Choose the Instax Mini 12 for a first camera
Pick the Mini 12 when the priority is simple operation. Automatic exposure, automatic flash adjustment, close-up mode, a selfie mirror, and automatic ejection give a beginner fewer ways to get stuck. It is also the easiest recommendation when the child wants the tactile experience of receiving a physical photograph immediately.
Choose the Polaroid Go Generation 3 for selfies and travel
Pick the Go Generation 3 for an older child who will value a compact camera, selfie mirror, self-timer, wrist strap, and double exposures. Confirm that the child and family are comfortable buying the camera’s dedicated Go film.
Choose the Mini Evo when film waste is the main concern
Pick the Mini Evo when the child wants to experiment freely but the family does not want every experiment printed. Previewing, internal storage, digital copies, reprints, and phone printing justify the extra complexity for a capable older child.
Choose the Kodak Mini Shot 3 Retro for square prints
Pick the Mini Shot 3 Retro when square 3-by-3-inch prints and smartphone printing are more important than the lightest body or the simplest controls. Verify availability first.
For large group portraits, consider a different category
None of these four models is an ideal large-format instant camera. The Mini 12 and Go use small formats, while the Kodak produces 3-inch square prints. If the main purpose is large group photographs or wall-sized display prints, a separate wide-format comparison is more appropriate than forcing one of these kid-friendly cameras to fill that role.

Budget for the film or print media
The camera is only the initial purchase. A child who enjoys instant photography can use consumables quickly, especially during a party or holiday. Before choosing a model, decide whether the family is comfortable with the ongoing cost and availability of its exact media.

These formats are not interchangeable. Do not assume that any small instant-film pack will fit any camera. Match the exact camera name and generation to the film or cartridge listing, particularly when shopping for the Polaroid Go.
With an analog camera, teach a simple “look, frame, press” routine. Have the child check that the subject’s face is in the frame, look for bright backlighting, and decide whether the photograph is worth one sheet of film. The goal is not to turn a child into a technical photographer; it is to make each print a deliberate choice.

A small bundle is often more useful than buying the camera alone. Consider Instax Mini 12 case protection, an Instax Mini photo album, and a starter supply of the correct film. Fujifilm lists a Mini 12 camera case, Mini album, and Instax Mini film among its accessories.
The Mini 12 requires two AA alkaline batteries, so AA alkaline batteries are a practical addition. The Mini Evo and Polaroid Go Generation 3 use internal rechargeable lithium-ion batteries and need an appropriate charging cable or charged battery before an outing. The Go Generation 3 includes a wrist strap; do not buy a separate strap unless the child wants a replacement or different style.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →A case is sensible because a child’s camera has exposed lenses, viewfinders, film doors, and print slots. It is not evidence that the camera is drop-proof, shockproof, waterproof, or childproof. Choose a case that fits the exact model and leaves the lens, film ejection path, and controls unobstructed.
Safety and supervision
The manufacturer information establishes operating and battery details but does not establish a universal minimum age for these cameras. Do not treat a retailer’s informal age suggestion as an official age rating. Instead, consider the individual child’s ability to handle the camera, strap, film packs, batteries, and charging equipment responsibly.
- Supervise younger children around straps, especially during active play.
- Keep film packs and loose accessories away from children who may put small objects in their mouths.
- Explain that film should not be opened or pulled from the camera after loading.
- Keep rechargeable cameras and charging cables away from water and inspect cables for damage.
- Never let a child play with loose batteries.
The Mini 12 uses two AA alkaline batteries, while the Mini Evo and Polaroid Go Generation 3 use internal rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. Rechargeable does not mean risk-free. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warns that swallowed coin or button batteries can cause severe injury or death and states that products containing them must meet performance and labeling requirements under Reese’s Law. Keep any loose coin-cell batteries in the home away from children and seek urgent medical help if one may have been swallowed.

Do not confuse thermal-print toy cameras with instant cameras
Many inexpensive children’s cameras use thermal paper. They may be entertaining and inexpensive to operate, but they do not create the same chemically developed photographs as Instax or Polaroid film. Other products, including the Mini Evo and Mini Shot 3 Retro, are digital cameras that print through a different process—Instax film in the Mini Evo and dye-sublimation in the Kodak.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThat does not make a thermal-print camera useless. It simply belongs in a different category: a toy digital camera or low-cost printer, not a traditional instant-film camera. If the appeal is the physical photograph developing after the shutter press, choose the Mini 12 or Polaroid Go. If the appeal is selecting, editing, and printing images, choose a hybrid such as the Mini Evo or Mini Shot 3 Retro.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the easiest instant camera for a child?
The Fujifilm Instax Mini 12 is the easiest choice for most beginners. It automatically adjusts exposure and flash brightness, has a simple lens-twist close-up mode, includes a selfie mirror, and ejects the exposed film automatically.
Are Instax Mini film and Polaroid Go film interchangeable?
No. Instax Mini film is for compatible Fujifilm Instax Mini cameras such as the Mini 12 and Mini Evo. Polaroid Go Generation 3 uses Polaroid Go film exclusively. Always match the consumable to the exact camera.
Is the Instax Mini Evo a real instant camera?
It creates instant physical prints, but it is a digital camera and printer rather than a purely analog instant camera. Its LCD, storage, preview, reprint history, and phone-printing features let the user choose which images to print.
How long does Instax Mini film take to develop?
Fujifilm states that an Instax Mini image develops in approximately 90 seconds, subject to ambient temperature.
Which camera wastes the least film?
The Fujifilm Instax Mini Evo wastes the least film in normal use because the child can preview and save photographs before printing. The Mini 12 and Polaroid Go are analog cameras, so every shutter press uses a sheet.
The Bottom Line
Buy the Fujifilm Instax Mini 12 for most children. It offers the clearest first-camera experience with the fewest controls to learn. Move to the Polaroid Go Generation 3 for a smaller selfie-and-travel camera, the Instax Mini Evo for previewing and reprints, or the Kodak Mini Shot 3 Retro for square smartphone prints. Whichever model you choose, budget for its exact film or print media and check compatibility before ordering.
