What Apple Pencil support should mean
“Supports Apple Pencil” can mean little more than drawing a line. For serious work, look for pressure sensitivity, tilt response, palm rejection, low-latency ink, finger-versus-pencil gesture handling and shortcuts such as double-tap or squeeze. Hover can preview a brush or cursor on compatible iPad and Pencil combinations; Scribble enables handwriting in text fields.
#1 Best Overall
- WHY APPLE PENCIL - With pixel-perfect precision, tilt sensitivity, and low latency, Apple Pencil (USB-C) makes note-taking, signing documents, and drawing easy at an affordable price. It pairs and charges via USB-C and can magnetically attach to your iPad.
- COMPATIBILITY - Apple Pencil (USB-C) works with iPad Pro 13-inch (M4 and M5); iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th generation); iPad Pro 11-inch (M4 and M5); iPad Pro 11-inch (1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th generation); iPad Air 13-inch (M2, M3, M4); iPad Air 11-inch (M2 and M3); iPad Air (4th and 5th generation); iPad (A16), iPad mini (A17 Pro), iPad mini (6th generation); and iPad (10th generation).
- EASY AND NATURAL - Write, sketch, and draw with pixel-perfect precision. Apple Pencil (USB-C) does it all with low latency and tilt sensitivity. Apple Pencil pairs and charges via USB-C and features a flat edge that attaches magnetically.
- TRANSFORMS IPAD INTO A CANVAS - Draw, sketch, color, take notes, and mark up documents. Use built-in apps like Notes and Freeform, or choose from over a million more apps available on the App Store. And for pros, use Apple Pencil hover on iPad Pro and iPad Air to preview your mark before you make it.
- WHAT'S IN THE BOX - Apple Pencil (USB-C)
Apple Pencil USB-C, first-generation, second-generation and Apple Pencil Pro are not interchangeable. Check your exact iPad-and-Pencil combination in Apple’s compatibility table before buying an app or expecting pressure, hover, magnetic charging or squeeze features.
Best art and drawing apps
1. Procreate — best overall digital art
Procreate is the strongest default for painting and illustration on iPad. Its raster engine combines layers and blend modes with more than 300 vendor-made brushes, QuickShape, StreamLine, Drawing Assist, Page Assist and 3D texture painting. It supports common exports including PSD, PNG, JPEG, TIFF and PDF, alongside its native project format. The official iPad page states that the app has no subscription.
- Best for: illustration, painting, lettering and finished raster artwork.
- Trade-off: raster canvases do not replace a vector or desktop-publishing workflow.
- Apple Pencil: pressure and tilt are central to its brush system; available behavior still depends on your hardware.
2. Adobe Fresco — best free art app
Adobe describes Fresco as free, with thousands of brushes, vector brushes, Live Brushes, animation and unlimited layers. It is particularly attractive if you already move files between Photoshop and Illustrator. The free Fresco app is not the same thing as free Adobe Creative Cloud: broader storage and desktop services may require a paid plan.

- Compatibility: The stylus pencil only works with iPads from 2018 onwards, including iPad Air 11 inch (2026-2024, M4/M3/M2), iPad Air 13 inch (2026-2024, M4/M3/M2), iPad Pro 11 inch (2025-2024, M5/M4), iPad Pro 13 inch (2025-2024, M5/M4), iPad A16/11th (2025), iPad 10th Gen (2022), iPad Pro 11 inch (2022-2018), iPad Pro 12.9 inch (2022-2018), iPad Air 5th/4th/3rd, iPad Mini A17 Pro/7th/6th/5th, and iPad 9th/8th/7th/6th. Please verify your model in [Settings > General > About] before purchasing.
- Tilt Sensitivity: The iPad Stylus features tilt sensitivity, allowing you to create varying line thicknesses and shadows by adjusting the angle of your pencil for apple ipad 10th generation.
- Palm Rejection: You can comfortably rest your hand on the screen without gloves while using the stylus pen for ipad.
- Magnetic Adsorption: The iPad pencil 10th generation magnetically attaches to iPads released from 2018~2026 just like 2nd generation for Apple Pencil. Note: Does not support magnetic charging.
- Type-C Fast Charging: Fully charges the ipad pencil in just 15 minutes for up to 9 hours of use. Note: Sleeps after 5 minutes of inactivity to save power.
- Best for: natural-media effects, animation and Adobe handoff.
- Trade-off: users seeking Procreate’s mature, one-purchase ecosystem may prefer Procreate.
3. Affinity Designer 2 — best for vector design
Affinity Designer 2 is built for scalable logos, icons, illustrations and layout-oriented graphics. Its iPad workflow supports precise curves and shapes, Apple Pencil pressure and tilt, and broad import/export options. Current comparative coverage describes a one-time-purchase model; confirm the App Store price for your country before buying.
- Best for: vector illustration and production graphics.
- Trade-off: its professional interface takes longer to learn than a sketchbook app and is not aimed at watercolor-style journaling.
4. Clip Studio Paint — best for comics and manga
Clip Studio Paint provides comic panels, speech balloons, perspective rulers, screentones, line-art tools and animation. It behaves more like desktop production software than a casual sketchbook. Its plan-based pricing and dense interface make it excessive for occasional doodling, but valuable for comic and manga production.
5. Sketchbook — approachable general sketching
Sketchbook offers a broad brush and drawing toolkit without Procreate’s full production complexity. It suits learners and experienced sketchers who want a conventional canvas. Verify the current iPad free and paid feature split before downloading.

6. Linea Sketch — quick, guided sketches
Linea Sketch deliberately keeps the toolset small. Layers, shape assistance, split-screen support and standard export formats make it a welcoming choice for visual notes and studies when a fixed canvas is preferable to an infinite board.
7. Concepts — precision on an infinite canvas
Concepts combines an infinite canvas with precision tools, making it useful for product ideas, diagrams, architecture and visual planning. A free tier is available with paid upgrades. Choose it for spatial thinking rather than page-by-page journaling.

9. Notability — best for recorded lectures
Notability links audio recordings to the point where you write, while also handling slides and PDFs. That makes it especially useful when replaying a lecture matters more than elaborate notebook customization. It has a free tier and paid plans; check current pricing rather than relying on older reviews.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems10. MyScript Notes — best handwriting-to-text conversion
The former Nebo is now MyScript Notes. Its focus is recognition: handwriting can become typed text, mathematical notation or clean shapes, and documents and PDFs can be annotated and exported. Recognition varies with language, writing style and document type. Keep the original ink and test the export before relying on conversion for exams or archives.
11. Microsoft OneNote — best for Windows and Microsoft 365
OneNote is the practical choice when an iPad is only one device in a Windows, Mac or Android workflow. Its free app provides sections and pages, while Microsoft 365 can add storage and broader Office value. It is less Apple-native than Goodnotes or Notability but often wins on institutional compatibility.

12. Apple Notes — best frictionless free option
Apple Notes is already on the iPad, syncs through iCloud and supports handwriting, sketches, scans, document markup and quick capture. It is ideal when you do not want another account or subscription. It is not a replacement for a specialist art studio or a deeply structured notebook app.
13. Apple Freeform — best Apple-native visual board
Freeform provides an infinite collaborative canvas for images, links, sticky notes, diagrams and loose handwriting. It works well for brainstorming and mood boards, but its spatial model is less suitable for sequential lecture notes or finished illustration.
Best PDF and professional workflows
14. LiquidText — best for research reading
LiquidText is designed for active reading. You can annotate PDFs, Word and PowerPoint files and web pages, pull passages into a workspace, connect evidence and rearrange excerpts. It is a research tool, not simply a highlighter. A free download and paid features are reported in comparative coverage; confirm the current plan directly.
15. PDF Expert — best for polished document administration
PDF Expert focuses on markup, form filling, signing, file management and professional review. Pick it when the deliverable is a completed or signed document. For extracting and comparing evidence, LiquidText is the better fit; for course notebooks, Goodnotes or Notability may be simpler.
16. Astropad Studio — best iPad-as-Mac graphics tablet
Astropad Studio sends Apple Pencil input into Mac creative applications. It is a bridge, not a standalone iPad notebook or painting studio, and requires a Mac-based workflow. Its subscription only makes sense for professionals who regularly need that connection.
Choose by workflow, not by feature count
- Painting and raster illustration: start with Procreate; choose Fresco if free entry, animation or Adobe handoff matters.
- Logos and scalable graphics: choose Affinity Designer 2 rather than a raster painting app.
- Comics: choose Clip Studio Paint for panels, rulers and screentones.
- Searchable handwritten notebooks: choose Goodnotes; choose Notability when linked lecture audio is essential.
- Handwriting conversion: choose MyScript Notes and verify language and export behavior first.
- Windows or Microsoft 365: choose OneNote and test synchronization on every device.
- Research papers: choose LiquidText for extracting and connecting passages; choose PDF Expert for forms, signatures and delivery.
- No recurring fee: begin with Procreate, Affinity Designer 2, Apple Notes or Freeform, subject to each app’s current price and features.
Common problems to prevent
- Wrong Pencil: compatibility is determined by the iPad model and Pencil generation, not by the app listing alone.
- Recognition errors: language support, stylized writing, paid tiers and imported PDFs can limit conversion. Preserve the original handwriting.
- Sync conflicts: identify whether the app uses iCloud, vendor cloud, OneDrive or manual export; use one account everywhere and test offline edits.
- Older iPad limits: canvas dimensions, layer counts, animation frames and 3D content can overwhelm hardware. Check the app’s compatibility guidance for your model.
- Subscription cancellation: export important files before cancelling and verify what remains editable or viewable under the vendor’s current policy.
- “Free” misunderstandings: distinguish free download from free export, storage, device access, registration and useful capacity.
A sensible app setup
Most people need one art app, one notes app and—only if necessary—one PDF specialist. A painter might use Procreate plus Apple Notes; a student might use Goodnotes plus LiquidText; a Windows-based student might choose OneNote instead. Fewer overlapping subscriptions mean simpler backups, exports and renewals.
