For a first latch hook project, choose a small panel or cushion-size kit rather than a large rug. Before buying, check the finished dimensions, how the pattern is shown, whether the yarn is pre-cut, what instructions are included, and whether the latch hook itself comes in the box. What is latch hooking?
Latch hooking is a repeated process: pass a latch hook under the mesh canvas, catch a folded short length of yarn, and pull it through so it is secured on the canvas. The finished piece can be a rug, cushion cover, or wall decoration. LoveCrafts and Latch Hook Australia describe these uses.

How to choose a latch hook kit
Pick a project size you can manage
Finished dimensions are a useful guide to the project’s scale and time commitment. Latch Hook Australia’s July 2026 guide recommends 20 × 20 cm to 30 × 30 cm for small starter projects, 40 × 40 cm to 45 × 45 cm for cushion-size projects, and 60 × 90 cm or larger for large rugs. Check how the design is marked
A color-printed or otherwise marked canvas lets you follow the design on the mesh. If the canvas is plain, check whether a separate chart and color key are supplied, and whether you are comfortable matching the chart to the canvas. Find out how the yarn is prepared
Some kits provide yarn pre-cut and sorted by color; others may leave more preparation to the maker. Confirm what the exact product includes before assuming the yarn is ready to use. LoveCrafts and Latch Hook Australia advise checking this detail.
Verify the hook and instructions
“Kit” or “complete kit” does not guarantee that a latch hook tool is included. LoveCrafts says to check the individual listing, and Dimensions’ 2025 catalog states that its kits include printed color canvas, pre-cut yarn, and instructions but sell the tool separately.
