The best pen for a beautiful letter is the one that feels comfortable in your hand, makes the line you want, and works well on the paper you plan to use. A fountain pen can give a note an expressive look; a quick-drying gel pen or ballpoint can be easier when smudging or convenience is the priority. Try your choice on the actual stationery before writing a long letter—no pen by itself guarantees beautiful handwriting.
How to choose a pen for letter writing
Start with the way you write, not with a claim that one pen is universally best. Caran d’Ache’s pen-selection guide recommends considering the ink, comfort, pen body, weight, balance and desired line. For letters, add the size of your handwriting, the paper’s response to ink, and how much drying time you can allow.

- Line and control: Choose a line that stays legible at your usual letter size. If you write small or intricate letters, try the pen on your paper first to see whether its line feels manageable.
- Grip and balance: A pen should feel natural through a full page. Weight and balance are personal preferences, so a brief writing trial is more useful than choosing by appearance alone.
- Drying and paper: Ink that remains wet can smudge, particularly if you move your hand across the line. Paper affects how a fountain pen performs, so test the pen-and-paper combination.
- Refills and upkeep: Think about whether you prefer replacing a cartridge or refill and how much maintenance you want to take on.
Which pen type suits your letter?
| Pen type | Good fit when | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Fountain pen | You want an expressive line and enjoy choosing nibs and ink. | Allow the ink to dry and use paper suited to fountain pen ink. Cartridge and refill options vary by model. |
| Gel pen | You want smooth writing with light pressure, or are looking for a quick-drying option. | Drying time depends on the formulation and conditions; a claim for one gel pen does not apply to all gel pens. |
| Ballpoint | You value quick-drying ink and practical refill use. | Writing feel and line quality vary by product, and no ballpoint suits every writer. |
Fountain pen: for an expressive, deliberate note
A fountain pen can lend letters, cards and notes a distinctive feel. LAMY’s fountain-pen guide notes that free-flowing ink needs time to settle and recommends suitable, premium paper. If you tend to turn or stack pages quickly, or your stationery absorbs ink poorly, test first and give the writing time to dry.
Gel pen: for smooth writing and a quick-drying option
Zebra describes pigment gel ink as smooth with light pressure and suitable for addressing letters in its ink FAQ. BIC recommends ballpoint or quick-drying gel pens for left-handed writers. Its FAQ says the Gel-ocity Quick Dry can dry in as little as five seconds; that is a product-specific manufacturer claim, not a guarantee for every paper, writing style or condition. See BIC’s FAQ.

Ballpoint: for quick drying and refill practicality
Zebra describes oil-based ballpoint ink as quick-drying and resistant to water and light in its ink FAQ. STAEDTLER explains how ballpoints work and says their refills generally last longer than fountain pen cartridges; this is a general manufacturer comparison, not a lifespan guarantee for every model. See STAEDTLER’s ballpoint guide.
If you write small or are left-handed
For small, intricate handwriting, look for a line that does not crowd your letters and a pen that gives you control at your usual writing pace. Product guidance does not establish a universal best pen or prove that a particular type improves handwriting, so make a few lines on the intended paper before committing to a full page.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test the pen on your stationery first
- Write a few lines on the same paper you will use for the letter, with the same ink and pen.
- Check whether the line stays clear at your handwriting size and whether the grip remains comfortable.
- Wait briefly, then pass your hand near the writing as you normally would. If ink transfers or smears, allow more drying time or try a different pen-and-paper combination.
- If you are testing a fountain pen, use paper intended to handle fountain pen ink and give the writing time to settle.
A short test helps reveal trade-offs that product descriptions cannot settle for your particular handwriting and stationery.
