A hands-free headband magnifier is a practical starting point for painting miniatures because it leaves both hands free for the brush and model. Donegan Optical’s OptiVISOR is one manufacturer-documented example, with several magnifications and working distances. If you also need light at the work surface, consider a desk-mounted magnifying lamp instead. There is no established one-size-fits-all winner: choose by the distance and posture at which you normally paint.
Headband magnifier or desk lamp?
The main choice is whether you want magnification to move with your head or stay fixed above your desk.

The lamp specifications are a catalog description, not a comparative test. Neither option has been shown here to outperform the other for miniature painting.

OptiVISOR magnification and working distances
Donegan Optical lists six OptiVISOR configurations. The figures below are manufacturer specifications, not independent assessments of comfort, field of view, or painting performance.

As magnification increases across this range, the stated focal distance gets shorter. A stronger lens therefore calls for working closer to the subject according to the manufacturer’s figures; it is not automatically the better choice. How to choose a magnifier for your painting posture
- Check your natural working distance. Sit or stand as you normally paint and note how far your eyes are from the miniature. Compare that distance with the product’s stated focal or working distance.
- Choose movement or a fixed setup. A headband magnifier moves with you and keeps your hands free; a desk lamp stays in place and may suit a stable workstation better.
- Decide whether you need built-in lighting. If your task light already illuminates the miniature well, magnification alone may be enough. If you want light directed at the work area, a magnifying lamp combines the two.
- Check glasses compatibility. Donegan says the OptiVISOR can be worn over prescription or safety glasses. For other products, confirm fit with the manufacturer or seller rather than assuming compatibility.
- Try comfort and visibility in use when possible. Field of view and comfort are important, but comparable measurements are not established for these options. Check whether the view and posture suit the way you paint.
What the available specifications can—and cannot—tell you
Product figures help compare magnification and working distance, but they do not identify a universally best magnifier for painting miniatures. No independent comparative test or relevant market statistic is established here. The OptiVISOR numbers come from Donegan Optical’s product specifications; the lamp figures come from a Micro-Mark catalog description. Treat them as starting points for matching a tool to your own working distance, not as proof of painting results.
