There is no verified list establishing which five colors the headline refers to, or evidence that homeowners are divided over those specific colors. A separate designer-favorite roundup offers five Benjamin Moore whites worth comparing: Simply White, Cloud White, White Dove, Swiss Coffee, and Chantilly Lace. Their differences in warmth, undertone, and brightness help explain why a paint that looks appealing in one room may not feel right in another.
What the five-color claim can—and cannot—tell you
The five whites below come from Posh Pennies’ roundup, updated March 8, 2024; they are not a verified match for the colors in the headline. The roundup describes designer preferences and color characteristics, but it does not document homeowner disagreement or establish a ranking. Treat these as examples to consider, not a definitive list of five colors that all designers favor.
Paint names also do not guarantee a fixed appearance. The roundup notes that exposure and lighting can change how a white reads in a room. Its descriptions are useful starting points, not predictions of how a color will look in your home. Read the Posh Pennies roundup.

How the five whites differ
| Paint | How the roundup describes it | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Simply White OC-117 | Warm white with subtle yellow undertones. | Its warmth may be more noticeable beside a cooler white or in a room where the light emphasizes yellow. |
| Cloud White OC-130 | Warm and soft, with yellow and taupe notes; described as brighter and somewhat warmer than White Dove. | Compare it directly with White Dove if you want to judge the difference in brightness and warmth in your own room. |
| White Dove OC-17 | Soft warm white with gray and yellow notes; the roundup also mentions green undertones. | The mix of notes makes a real-room sample especially useful if you are sensitive to subtle shifts in white. |
| Swiss Coffee OC-45 | Creamy and warm; the roundup says its undertones may read gray, green, or yellow depending on exposure. | The article reports that designer Shea McGee used it at 75% strength. That is an account of one application, not a universal formula. |
| Chantilly Lace OC-65 | Crisp and bright. | The roundup says it can feel cool or gray in a north-facing room. |
Why a popular paint can feel divisive
“Divided” is not supported here as a measured homeowner response to these five whites. But people can reasonably prefer different results: one person may want a crisp, bright white, while another finds a softer or creamier white more comfortable. Even the same paint can appear different as the room’s exposure and lighting change.
That makes the choice less about finding the universally best white and more about deciding what you want the room to feel like. Consider perceived warmth, undertone, brightness, the room’s light, and whether the color will go on walls or trim. A color name alone cannot settle those questions.

How to choose a white for your room
- Decide what you want to see. Choose whether you are aiming for a crisp, bright white or a softer, warmer one before comparing specific names.
- Compare likely candidates side by side. For example, the roundup describes Cloud White as brighter and somewhat warmer than White Dove, while Simply White is noted for subtle yellow undertones.
- Test the color in the intended room. Use a paint sample pot or a peel-and-stick sample, then look at it in that room’s light. Sampling can help reveal how exposure affects the appearance; it does not guarantee the finished result.
- Judge the color where it will be used. Check it on the wall if you are painting walls, and compare it with nearby trim or other fixed finishes. The roundup discusses wall-versus-trim use as a relevant distinction, but does not prescribe one of these five for either application.
Dark colors are a separate, current design conversation
A different question is whether to use dark, saturated paint. In an article published December 27, 2025, Homes & Gardens reported differing designer opinions about whether dark colors would remain fashionable in 2026. The article discusses dark blues, burgundy, deep greens, and charcoal, and suggests smaller or transitional rooms—such as foyers, powder rooms, and formal dining rooms—as possible places to use them. It also describes balancing darker areas with lighter ones. These are attributed design views and trend reporting, not measured homeowner preferences or universal rules.
Interior designer Hannah Blumenthal of Studio Olivine said, “While a new year always invites a fresh start, I believe that deep, rich paint colors are here to stay for quite a while.” Designer Roger Higgins of R. Higgins Interiors offered a different emphasis on composition: “You really need both dark colors and light colors to create balance in the home.” Those statements reflect the designers’ opinions, not an agreed forecast.
