For brushing interior walls, choose a 3- to 4-inch flat brush with synthetic nylon or polyester bristles for typical water-based latex paint. Use an angled sash brush for corners, ceiling lines and trim. For broad, uninterrupted wall surfaces, a roller is usually more practical than a brush.
Choose bristles to match the paint
For water-based interior paints, synthetic bristles are the practical choice. Sherwin-Williams says nylon/polyester blends combine nylon’s durability with polyester’s shape retention, and notes that polyester brushes hold their shape and stiffness in latex paint (Sherwin-Williams). Benjamin Moore likewise recommends synthetic bristles for water-based interior paint; soft nylon/polyester bristles are flexible and can help reduce brush marks (Benjamin Moore).

Natural bristles are generally suited to oil-based paints and finishes, rather than water-based latex. Sherwin-Williams recommends natural China bristle for oil-based paint, stains and varnishes. Benjamin Moore identifies White China bristles for woodwork, enamels and marine applications. Check the brush label against the paint and finish you plan to use.

Flat brushes for broader sections
A flat, square-cut brush holds more paint and covers more area than a small detail brush. It is useful for brushing a broad flat section, paneling or a touch-up where a roller is not suitable. For typical interior latex paint, a 3- to 4-inch synthetic flat brush is a reasonable starting point; manufacturer guidance varies by brand and task rather than establishing one universal best width.

Angled sash brushes for edges and corners
The slanted bristles of an angled sash brush give more control along corners, ceiling lines, trim and other edges. Sherwin-Williams describes this shape as useful for cutting in at the ceiling and painting trim; Benjamin Moore recommends angled sash brushes for corners, woodwork, molding and detailed surfaces.
Choose a width that balances coverage and control
A wider brush carries more paint and covers more area, but a narrower brush is easier to maneuver in tight spaces. The published size ranges differ by guidance and intended use:

| Task | Published brush-width guidance | Shape or use |
|---|---|---|
| Small spaces and detail work | 1–2 inches, per Sherwin-Williams contractor guidance | Smaller brush for control |
| Trim and corners | 2½–3 inches, per Sherwin-Williams contractor guidance | Often an angled sash brush |
| Large flat surfaces such as walls | 3–4 inches, per Benjamin Moore | Flat brush |
| Larger areas such as walls or paneling | 4–5 inches, per Sherwin-Williams contractor guidance | Flat brush with more coverage |
These are selection ranges, not competing claims that one exact width is best for every wall, painter or paint. Choose the largest brush you can guide comfortably through the area without losing control at edges.
Use a roller for most broad, flat wall coverage
A brush can handle edges, details, touch-ups and areas a roller cannot reach, but it is seldom the most practical tool for coating an entire large, flat wall. Benjamin Moore recommends a roller cover for large, flat surfaces such as walls and ceilings, and a brush for raised, recessed or finer details. If you specifically prefer to brush, a flat synthetic brush is the relevant choice; for a typical room, use a brush where precision matters and a roller across the open wall.

A named example: Purdy XL Swan
Bob Vila’s product review names the Purdy XL Swan Flat Paint Brush as its best-for-walls pick and describes it as a 3-inch, square-cut brush with nylon/polyester bristles. The publication reports assessing its comfort and coverage; that is Bob Vila’s review, not a universal performance guarantee. Its size and synthetic bristles make it an example of the kind of brush to consider for brushing wall sections, not a definitive choice for every paint, task or painter (Bob Vila).
