“Knitted earbud covers” can mean three different projects: a removable cover for over-ear headphone pads, a cozy for a wireless earbud charging case, or a pouch for storing loose earbuds. Choose the object first; the shapes, materials, and instructions are not interchangeable.
Which kind of knitted earbud cover do you need?
| Project | What it covers | Pattern details |
|---|---|---|
| Over-ear earpad covers | The padded cups of over-ear headphones | Daniel Rosenne’s ARRL instructions use mercerized cotton, double-pointed needles, and elastic to make a removable cover. |
| Wireless earbud case cozy | The charging case | Sara Stewart’s Wireless Earbud Cozy was designed for an AirPods 3 case and can be adapted to other dimensions. |
| Earbud pouch | Loose earbuds in storage | Mary Keenan’s Earbud Pouch is a seamless, top-down pouch pattern. |
If you mean a knitted layer that fits over the cushions you wear on your head, follow the over-ear instructions below. If you want to protect or store the small earbuds themselves, use a case cozy or pouch pattern instead.

Gather the materials
- 100% mercerized cotton yarn: the ARRL project lists one 50-gram ball.
- Five 3 mm (US 3) double-pointed needles.
- About 70 cm (28 inches) of 4 mm (1/4-inch) elastic for two covers.
- A yarn needle, stitch markers, and scissors.
The materials and method come from the ARRL pattern by Daniel Rosenne, published May 14, 2021. The pattern specifies cotton and elastic for this project; those choices should not be treated as universal requirements for every kind of earbud cover.
Work the cover from the center outward
- Cast on nine stitches, divide them across three double-pointed needles, join in the round without twisting, and mark the beginning of the round.
- Increase by knitting into the front and back of stitches so the fabric grows outward from the center. Add needles as the circumference widens.
- Keep comparing the growing piece with the actual headphone pad. The pattern provides a sequence of rounds, but no universal pad-size chart; fit depends on the device and the knitter’s gauge.
- When the piece is large enough, work the turned hem described in the pattern. Sew the live stitches to the inside to form a casing.
- Thread the narrow elastic through the casing and secure it so the cover sits on the pad. Check that it is secure without covering controls or interfering with intended use.
Follow the full round-by-round shaping and finishing instructions in the ARRL article; the outline here explains the construction, not a substitute stitch chart.
#1 Best Overall
- 【Protection】Crafted from a breathable knit cotton blend, these Knit Headphone Ear Covers act as a barrier against sweat, dust, and makeup residue. The wrap-around design fully covers ear pad edges, helping guard against scrapes from nails or jewelry and extending the headphone's lifespan.
- 【Universal Fit】Designed to fit ear pads ranging from 8cm (3.1in) when relaxed to 13cm (5.1in) when stretched, these Washable Ear Pad Covers feature an elastic edge that offers a secure grip on both round and oval earcups. The design prevents slippage during workouts or active use while maintaining sound clarity.
- 【Durable Fabric】Made of soft and elastic knit cotton, these Washable Ear Pad Covers balance comfort with stretchability. The fabric remains breathable to reduce ear heat during extended wear and adapts snugly to various ear pad sizes without losing shape.
- 【Year Round Comfort】The moisture-wicking cotton layer in these Knit Headphone Ear Covers absorbs sweat during exercise, while the lightweight fabric prevents overheating in warm conditions. In cooler settings, the covers provide a thin insulating layer without bulk, enhancing comfort during long listening sessions.
- 【Easy Maintenance】These Washable Ear Pad Covers are machine washable in cold water (30°C) with mild detergent to remove sweat and odors, then air-dried for reuse. The covers retain shape and elasticity after repeated washing. For stubborn stains, spot clean with a soft brush and air dry flat. Store conveniently in a mesh pouch.
Use gauge and weight figures as project references
In the 2021 ARRL article, contributor Zippi Rosenne reported a project gauge of 23 stitches by 35 rows per 10 cm (4 inches). The yarn manufacturer’s stated gauge was 26 stitches by 36 rows per 10 cm. Rosenne also reported that one finished cover weighed 11 g including its elastic. These figures describe that project, not guaranteed results for another knitter or headphone model.
Rosenne described the covers as removable and washable and reported a snug fit and pleasant texture. The article does not report controlled wash, comfort, sound-quality, hygiene, or durability testing, so treat those points as the contributor’s experience rather than tested performance.

Patterns for a charging-case cozy or storage pouch
Wireless earbud charging-case cozy
Sara Stewart’s free Wireless Earbud Cozy listing, published in February 2022, specifies roughly 15 yards of Aran-weight yarn and recommends making a fairly dense fabric. It was designed for an AirPods 3 charging case and can be adapted to other dimensions. The pattern begins with Judy’s Magic Cast-On and closes with Kitchener stitch; a draw-through finish is also described.
Earbud storage pouch
Mary Keenan’s free Earbud Pouch listing, published in September 2014, describes a seamless, top-down pattern using sport-weight yarn and 2.5 mm needles. It gives a gauge of 34 stitches by 48 rows per 4 inches and calls the size suitable for most earbuds. That is the listing’s description, not a verified fit guarantee for every earbud.

How to choose and check the fit
- Measure the right object: use the headphone pad’s dimensions for an over-ear cover, the case for a cozy, or the earbuds and storage needs for a pouch.
- Match the retention method: an elastic hem holds an over-ear pad cover; the case cozy and pouch patterns use their own shaping and finishing.
- Consider fabric density and stretch: the cited patterns use different yarn weights and construction methods. Do not assume one yarn or needle size suits all three.
- Test against the device as you knit: for headphone pads, check placement and clearance around controls and other parts. No cited pattern establishes a cross-model sizing standard.
- Check pattern availability: free pattern listings and downloads can change over time.
Another option is Lion Brand Yarn’s Knitted Headphone Covers listing, marked easy/beginner+ and using DK/light yarn. It lists a gauge of 24 stitches and 32 rows per 4 inches and approximate dimensions of 3.45 by 3.25 inches. Those dimensions are for the listed pattern; they do not establish fit for every headphone.
