There is no single polyester beading thread that is best for every project. For bead crochet, MIYUKI Crochet Thread #8 is a clearly documented option at about 0.45 mm. For finer bead stitching, weaving, or embroidery, Fire Mountain Gems’ chart lists WildFire and WildFire Ultra in smaller diameters. Choose by technique and bead-hole clearance—not by strength figures alone.
Which polyester thread fits your project?
These products serve different kinds of beadwork. MIYUKI’s polyester crochet thread is intended for bead crochet, while the supplier chart places WildFire and WildFire Ultra in finer beadwork applications. Their different diameters make them poor substitutes for one another in many designs.

How to choose thread for beadwork
- Start with the technique. Choose a thread intended for the construction method: MIYUKI Crochet Thread #8 is designed for bead crochet; WildFire products are listed for stitching, weaving, and embroidery. Product descriptions are available from MIYUKI and Fire Mountain Gems.
- Check bead-hole and needle clearance. A finer thread may leave room for more passes through small beads. A thicker thread can be unsuitable even if its stated strength looks appealing. If stitching becomes difficult, BeadFX advises adjusting thread size: BeadFX guide to beading thread.
- Consider the structure and finish you want. The feel and construction suited to a supple fringe or embroidery surface may differ from what works for a firm woven design. The available product descriptions distinguish techniques, but do not establish an independent comparison of flexibility or finished results.
- Choose a color with visible thread in mind. Match it to the beads and design where thread will show. The available information does not establish a controlled colorfastness comparison among these polyester products.
What strength ratings do—and do not—tell you
Fire Mountain Gems’ chart reports 10 lb for WildFire at 0.15 mm, 15 lb for WildFire at 0.2 mm, and 9 lb for WildFire Ultra at 0.1 mm. The chart does not report test conditions, so these should be treated as supplier specifications rather than independent laboratory results or a promise about how much a finished piece can hold. Knots, construction, abrasion, and bead edges also affect a finished piece; no independent comparative test is established here.
Check the material before buying
Several beading threads with similar uses are not polyester. MIYUKI Dura-Line is polyethylene, about 0.12 mm or 0.15 mm; MIYUKI describes it as strong and abrasion-resistant and recommends it for bead stitching with repeated passes.
