There is no verified, complete 1–20 order available for the list implied by “Work of art” to “Needs redoing.” Naming clubs at either end or presenting a replacement order as that original ranking would invent its central facts. What can be established is how to judge the 2023/24 crests consistently, what several of their symbols mean, and why later redesigns should not be mistaken for the badges used that season.

Why the full 2023/24 ranking cannot be verified
The available search result for Hyrra, titled “The 20 Premier League badges – ranked,” describes 2023/24 crests, but the page itself could not be fetched. Its complete order, methodology and the clubs associated with the “Work of art” and “Needs redoing” labels therefore remain unconfirmed. A separate Sports Illustrated list and a FourFourTwo ranking are accessible, but neither is established as the same article or ranking. Substituting either would answer a different question.
That distinction matters: a badge ranking is an editorial opinion, not an official Premier League assessment. Without the source list, there is no reliable basis for attributing its positions or verdicts to particular clubs.

How to judge a club badge fairly
A useful ranking should assess every crest against the same visual tests, while keeping aesthetic opinion separate from verifiable history. Simplicity alone is not a complete measure: a detailed shield may carry strong local meaning, while a compact mark may reproduce more clearly at small sizes.
- Legibility: Can the main shapes and lettering still be recognised when the badge is reduced?
- Silhouette and balance: Does the outline feel coherent, and do its elements sit comfortably together?
- Colour: Are the colours distinctive and used in a way that supports clarity?
- Distinctiveness: Can a viewer tell the crest apart from other clubs’ marks?
- Connection: Do its symbols communicate something meaningful about the club or its place?
These criteria help explain trade-offs; they do not produce an objective score or an official winner.

What several Premier League crests represent
The Premier League’s explainer, published on 20 September 2026, records histories and design details for a number of clubs. These are useful context, but later updates must be kept separate from the 2023/24 season.
- Arsenal: The current badge was introduced in 2002. Its eastward-pointing cannon refers to the munitions workers at the Royal Arsenal in Woolwich.
- Aston Villa: Villa used a circular badge in 2023/24, then unveiled an updated shield in 2024. The Premier League says the star on the updated design marks the 1982 European Cup victory.
- Bournemouth: The 2013 badge includes the silhouette of club legend Dickie Dowsett heading a ball.
- Brentford: The 2017 badge features a buff-tailed bumblebee and replaced a four-quadrant shield.
- Brighton: The club introduced its circular crest in 2011, with a white seagull in flight.
- Chelsea: The club launched its updated badge in 2005. The blue lion derives from an element of the former Metropolitan Borough of Chelsea’s coat of arms.
- Coventry City: Its current crest, introduced in 2009 as a cleaned-up version of a 1983 design, draws its elephant, castle, phoenix and eagle from Coventry’s coat of arms.
- Fulham: Unveiled in 2001, the minimalist crest uses a red monogram combining the initials FFC.
- Ipswich Town: The crest has been in use since 1995 and includes a Suffolk Punch, Wolsey Gate turrets and water lines. The Premier League describes its main element as “a white Suffolk Punch, a famous local breed of heavy workhorse.”
- Leeds United: Adopted in 1999, the shield places the White Rose of York above the LUFC letters.
- Manchester City: The current circular crest was unveiled in 2016, returning to a more traditional style after the golden-eagle design used from 1997.
- Nottingham Forest: Created in 1974 after a public design competition, the badge includes two stars marking European Cup victories in 1979 and 1980.
- Tottenham Hotspur: The club introduced a simplified badge in 2006 and simplified it further in 2024, removing the curved club-name text under the cockerel. That later version should not be shown as the 2023/24 design.
Which badges changed after 2023/24?
The season matters when comparing crests. Aston Villa’s 2024 update followed a circular badge used during 2023/24; Tottenham also made a further simplification in 2024. A retrospective ranking needs to use the designs from the season being ranked, rather than applying those later changes to earlier appearances.
