The best printer for art prints depends first on the size and paper workflow you need; the research available here does not establish a tested overall winner. For a 13-inch pigment-ink workflow, consider the Epson SureColor P700; for 17-inch output, compare the Epson SureColor P900 and Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-1100. The Canon PIXMA PRO-200S is a 13-inch dye-ink option with panorama support.
Quick comparison
| Printer | Width and workflow | Ink system | Useful fit | Caveat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Epson SureColor P700 | 13-inch class; roll and cut-sheet handling | UltraChrome PRO10 pigment inks | Artists whose routine work fits a 13-inch workflow and want standard roll-media handling | Confirm current local availability and paper profiles |
| Epson SureColor P900 | 17-inch class; roll adapter optional | UltraChrome PRO10 pigment inks | Artists who need wider output and prefer the Epson workflow | Roll support requires an optional adapter |
| Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-1100 | 17-inch class; borderless output up to 17 × 22 inches | 11 pigment-based inks plus Chroma Optimizer | Artists considering a 17-inch Canon pigment system | Specifications do not establish comparative quality or operating cost; verify availability |
| Canon PIXMA PRO-200S | 13-inch class; borderless output up to 13 × 19 inches and panorama up to 13 × 39 inches | Eight dye-based inks | Artists prioritizing a dye-ink workflow and panorama capability | Not a pigment printer; check paper requirements and intended display conditions |
Choose by print size and workflow
Start with the largest size you produce regularly, then check whether you need rolls, cut sheets, or both. The Epson SureColor P700 supports roll widths up to 13 inches; the P900 supports roll widths up to 17 inches. Epson lists cut-sheet widths up to 24 inches for the P700 and 36 inches for the P900, one sheet at a time; those are supported sheet widths, not claims about borderless printable width.
Epson says roll handling is standard on the P700 and optional on the P900. If you are considering the P900 for panoramic work, account for the adapter and confirm the current setup requirements. For either model, check the actual feed path, paper dimensions, thickness, and profile for the media you plan to use.

Pigment or dye ink?
The P700, P900, and PRO-1100 use pigment-based ink systems; the PRO-200S uses dye-based inks. That distinction can help narrow a shortlist, but it does not by itself establish which printer is best for every artwork, paper, or display situation. Match the ink system to your print goals, the exact paper, and the conditions in which the work will be displayed.

Epson’s 2020 announcement quoted preliminary or expected permanence ratings of up to 200 years for color and 400 years for black-and-white prints for the P700/P900 ink system. Epson said actual stability varies with paper, image, lighting, humidity, and other conditions, and that it does not guarantee longevity. Treat those figures as qualified manufacturer-reported claims, not a guaranteed lifespan or a head-to-head comparison across brands.
Check paper compatibility before buying
Paper size and thickness, feed path, media setting, and profile all matter. Epson’s cited support specification lists roll-media thickness of 0.08–0.7 mm and cut-sheet thickness of 0.08–0.3 mm for the P700/P900; cut sheets are fed one at a time. Epson cautions that it cannot guarantee the quality of third-party paper and recommends testing a sample before a large purchase or print job.

How to choose a printer for selling art prints
- Choose the width. Compare the printer’s roll width and cut-sheet dimensions with the largest sizes you produce routinely.
- Choose the feed workflow. Decide whether you need roll media, cut sheets, or both, and check whether an adapter is optional.
- Match the ink system to the work. Identify whether the candidate uses pigment or dye ink; do not assume that ink type alone determines quality or longevity.
- Verify your paper. Check thickness, feed path, profile, media settings, and borderless support for the exact model and stock.
- Check purchase details locally. Current price, inventory, warranty, ink cost per print, and operating costs were not verified in this research, so confirm them with current manufacturer or retailer information before purchasing.
