Value is how light or dark a color or tone appears. In painting and visual design, arranging light and dark values creates contrast and emphasis, helps model form and suggest depth, and can influence a work’s mood.
Value is an attribute of color and tone; its placement and contrast contribute to design principles such as emphasis and movement. This distinction helps explain both what value is and how artists use it.
What is value in art and design?
In color, value means how light or dark a color appears. In a broader discussion of visual art, it also describes the artwork’s organization from light to dark, which can be considered without its hues by looking at a grayscale version.

Value is one characteristic of color, alongside hue and intensity. Hue is the color family; intensity describes how bright or dull a color is. Two different hues can have similar values, and a single hue can be shifted toward lighter or darker values.
Value and the principles of design
Value itself is an element or characteristic of art. The Getty Museum Education Department’s Understanding Formal Analysis explains that principles of design describe how artists use elements of art in a work. Value contrasts and their placement can contribute to emphasis and movement, among other compositional effects.
Light-dark contrast can make a focal area stand out. Concentrating contrast in one area may emphasize it, while distributing contrasts around a work can guide the viewer’s eye from place to place.
How value works in a painting
Contrast, emphasis, and legibility
Adjacent light and dark values create contrast. That contrast can attract attention, distinguish shapes, and help a composition read at a glance without relying on color differences alone. Notice where contrast is strongest and whether it directs attention to the intended area.

Modeling form
Changes from light to shadow can make a flat shape appear three-dimensional. The Boise Art Museum gives the example of a circle becoming a sphere when value is added: the value changes help describe the form.
Suggesting depth
Value can help suggest spatial depth. One useful landscape convention is to show distant objects lighter and foreground elements darker. This is an approach, not a universal rule; lighting and the conditions depicted can call for other value relationships.
Mood and interpretation
Value patterns can contribute to mood. The Open University notes that darker paintings may feel gloomy or sombre, mid-range values soft or harmonious, and light-dominated paintings optimistic or cheerful. These are possible interpretations, not fixed effects: the subject and context of the whole work matter.
How to observe value in an artwork
- Identify the lightest and darkest areas, then describe the overall range from light to dark.
- Look for adjacent light-dark contrasts. Which area attracts your attention first?
- Notice how values are distributed. Are contrasts concentrated in one zone or repeated throughout the work?
- Ask whether value changes model volume, suggest depth, or establish emphasis.
- Describe the mood as an interpretation, and point to visible value choices that support it rather than treating the mood as a formula.
When looking at light and shadow, also consider how many light sources seem to be present and whether the transitions are even or sharply contrasting. These questions are among the Princeton University Art Museum’s prompts for analyzing paintings.

A beginner value exercise
The Boise Art Museum suggests using one graphite pencil and paper to explore value. The exercise below applies that simple approach without requiring specialized supplies.
- On paper, make a series of pencil marks, moving from light pressure to darker pressure.
- Choose a simple object or draw a sphere.
- Observe where light reaches the form and where it falls into shadow.
- Use changes in pencil value to show those light and shadow areas.
- Step back and check whether the value changes help the object read as a form.
Comparing value in two paintings
To compare how two paintings use value, look at the width of each work’s light-to-dark range, where its strongest contrasts occur, and how light and dark areas are distributed. Then consider how those choices model form, suggest depth, establish emphasis, or contribute to mood.

How does value create form and depth?
