There is no universally best printer for both waterslide decals and artwork. For decals, choose the paper first and match its printer technology, feed path, and finishing instructions; for artwork, compare print size, ink system, media handling, color workflow, and running costs.
The reviewed Alizarin waterslide paper is for inkjet printers and requires varnish before water transfer. An artwork printer’s specifications do not by themselves establish compatibility with decal film, so check the exact paper and printer instructions before buying or printing.
Quick comparison
| Need | Evidence-led direction | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Small craft decals | Use waterslide paper made for your printer technology. The reviewed Alizarin product is described for inkjet printers. | Exact paper and printer compatibility, sheet thickness, feed path, film type, and varnish instructions. |
| Large or fine-art prints | Consider a photo printer sized for your intended output. Epson’s P900 is a documented 17-inch pigment-ink example. | Current availability, media support, profiles, running costs, and whether decal film is explicitly supported. |
| Frequent photo printing | Compare tank-based photo printers with cartridge models for total running costs. | Print volume, quality, media support, and replacement-ink costs. |
| Protected decal finish | Follow the decal-paper maker’s specified varnish process. | Varnish compatibility, drying and cure times, receiving surface, and use-specific limitations. |
Match the waterslide paper to the printer
Waterslide paper is not interchangeable across printer technologies. The reviewed Alizarin clear and opaque products are described for inkjet printers; the maker lists examples of compatible printer models, but those examples are not a universal compatibility guarantee. Check the exact paper’s current instructions and your printer’s supported media path and thickness before printing.

Choose clear or opaque film for the project
The reviewed Alizarin product is offered in clear and opaque variants. The right choice depends on the project’s background and how visible the film should be. The available evidence does not establish one option as best for every substrate, so consult the product instructions and test on the intended surface.
Choosing a printer for artwork
Artwork selection is a separate decision from decal-paper compatibility. Epson’s buying guide recommends considering print volume, output size, style, and future needs. It notes that A3+ or larger may suit portfolio or professional work, pigment ink can help with archival longevity, and ICC profiles for selected papers can support color accuracy. These are manufacturer recommendations, not independent comparative test results.

Epson SureColor P900: a documented large-format example
Epson identifies the P900 as a 17-inch printer with 10-color archival pigment ink and sheet-media support up to 1.5 mm. Epson also states display-permanence ratings of up to 200 years for color and 400 years for black-and-white prints under its specified conditions. These are Epson’s model-specific claims, not a guarantee for an individual print or evidence that the printer supports a particular waterslide sheet. Check current availability, paper profiles, media requirements, and costs before purchase.
Frequent printing and total cost
Epson’s guide recommends considering tank photo printers for high-volume printing because they can lower running costs. Compare the full workflow—printer, ink, paper, and software—rather than judging by the purchase price alone. Canon describes its imagePROGRAF PRO line as pigment based and its PIXMA PRO family as dye based; verify the exact model rather than generalizing across a product family.

- Check the printer’s media path and supported thickness, then load the sheet as the paper maker directs.
- Print using the maker’s recommended settings and allow the print to dry as instructed.

- Does the printer support the sheet’s thickness and feed path?
- Do I need clear or opaque film for my project?
- What output size do I need for artwork, and how often will I print?

- What varnish, drying, and transfer directions does the paper maker specify?
FAQ
Can laser waterslide paper be used in an inkjet printer?
Do not assume it can. Match the paper to the printer technology and follow the paper maker’s instructions. The reviewed Alizarin instructions cover inkjet decal paper, not laser-paper compatibility.
Does inkjet waterslide paper need to be sealed?
For the reviewed Alizarin inkjet paper, yes: the manufacturer says it is not waterproof and instructs users to spray varnish after printing and before transfer. Other products may have different directions, so check the exact paper’s instructions.

How long should a transferred decal dry?
Alizarin’s instructions specify at least 48 hours after transfer. This is a manufacturer instruction for its workflow; follow the directions for your own paper and test the finished result.
Does a photo printer’s media specification prove waterslide compatibility?
No. Specifications for photo media establish the stated media capabilities, not compatibility with every decal film. Check both the printer’s supported media path and the waterslide-paper maker’s directions.
Are printer-ink permanence claims a guarantee for my artwork?
No. Epson’s stated P900 display-permanence figures apply under the manufacturer’s specified conditions. They do not guarantee the life of an individual print or establish how a print will perform on a particular paper or surface.
