GIMP 3.2 is no longer an upcoming release. It launched on March 14, 2026, and the official downloads page lists GIMP 3.2.4, released April 17, 2026, as the current stable version. The update is less about a dramatic interface redesign or AI features than about making GIMP more flexible and non-destructive for painting, illustration, compositing, mockups, and repeated revisions.

Its headline additions are Link Layers and Vector Layers, joined by non-destructive filters on channels, improved text and brush workflows, a new Overwrite paint mode, and broader file-format support. These changes make GIMP 3.2 a more capable painting companion—but they do not turn it into a full replacement for Photoshop, Krita, Inkscape, or professional layout software in every workflow.

The short version

GIMP 3.2 is a meaningful upgrade for painters and illustrators who build layered work, reuse external artwork, revise effects frequently, or move between raster and vector elements. It is less transformative for someone who mainly crops photographs, adjusts color, or paints on a single raster layer.

  • Most important caution: rasterizing still creates a destructive boundary, and linked files must remain available.
  • Current version: GIMP 3.2.4 is the stable version identified on the official GIMP downloads page.

Why non-destructive editing matters to painters

In a destructive workflow, an editable object is converted into ordinary pixels or merged with other layers. Once that happens, changing the original shape, source image, or effect may require undoing several later operations—or rebuilding the work from scratch.

Non-destructive editing keeps more of the underlying information available. A filter can retain its settings, a linked image can be transformed without immediately flattening the source, and a vector shape can preserve its geometry instead of becoming painted pixels. This is especially valuable when a painting is still evolving: you can change proportions, revise a title treatment, replace a reference image, or adjust an effect without discarding the structure that made the edit possible.

GIMP 3.2 moves toward a workflow conceptually similar to Photoshop Smart Objects, but the systems are not identical. GIMP’s new features should be understood on their own terms rather than as a promise of feature-for-feature parity.

Link Layers: useful for external artwork and repeated assets

Link Layers let you incorporate an external image into a composition while retaining a connection to the source file. The linked content can be transformed—scaled, rotated, and otherwise positioned—without immediately reducing it to a permanently rasterized version. When the source image changes, the composition can update as well.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a painter, imagine keeping a logo, scanned texture, character design, decorative border, or reference illustration in a separate file. You can place that asset in a GIMP composition, transform it for the current canvas, then revise the source image in its original application. The composition can reflect the updated artwork without requiring you to delete and re-import every copy.

This is particularly helpful for:

  • repeated objects in a scene;
  • logos and lettering used across several illustrations;
  • user-interface or game-art mockups;
  • reference images maintained outside the main painting;
  • textures and patterns that are updated periodically; and
  • assets created in another graphics application.

The file-management trade-off

A Link Layer is not the same as an embedded copy. The project depends on the external asset remaining available at the expected location. Moving, renaming, deleting, or transferring that source file can break the link or leave the composition unable to update correctly.

A practical arrangement is to keep the XCF project and its linked assets inside one project folder, with subfolders such as sources, textures, and exports. Before sending the project to another artist or opening it on another computer, test the links rather than assuming they will resolve automatically. A portable project should include every external image it depends on.

Link Layers are similar in purpose to an external-asset or Smart Object workflow, but they should not be advertised as a complete replacement for every Smart Object feature. Their value is greatest when you already have a disciplined asset-management habit.

Vector Layers bring editable shapes into a raster-first application

GIMP 3.2’s Path tool can create Vector Layers. Instead of immediately painting a shape as pixels, you can retain adjustable vector geometry and modify its fill and stroke settings later. The release also adds SVG export and expanded vector options in PDF export.

This matters for painters who combine illustration with graphic elements. Logos, icons, diagrams, speech bubbles, interface elements, geometric decorations, and simple lettering can remain crisp and adjustable while the painted portions of the image stay raster-based.

The distinction is important:

  • A raster layer records pixels. Painting directly onto it changes the image data.
  • A vector layer records shape information. You can revise the geometry, fill, and stroke without repainting the shape from scratch.

Vector Layers do not make GIMP a complete vector-design or desktop-publishing application. For complex logos, technical diagrams, extensive typography, sophisticated page layouts, or large collections of vector objects, a dedicated tool such as Inkscape remains more appropriate. GIMP’s improvement is that simple editable vector elements can now participate more naturally in a painting and compositing workflow.

Non-destructive filters now reach channels

GIMP 3.2 extends non-destructive filter support to channels, in addition to layers and layer groups. Filters can also be applied to Link Layers and Vector Layers. The benefit is straightforward: filter settings can remain editable instead of being permanently baked into the underlying content.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, you might apply an effect to a layer, decide later that it is too strong, and reopen the filter settings rather than reconstructing the layer from an earlier file. This is safer for experimental color treatments, texture work, glows, and other effects that are likely to change during painting.

Pass Through groups and adjustment-layer-like workflows

GIMP does not necessarily present a dedicated object called an “Adjustment Layer” using Photoshop’s terminology. However, an empty layer group set to Pass through can be used to make a filter affect layers below it, creating an adjustment-layer-like workflow.

That distinction matters. The technique can be useful, but it is a workflow arrangement rather than proof that GIMP has an identical adjustment-layer system. Layer groups, masks, rendering behavior, and filter interactions should be tested on important work—especially in early projects created after a major version change.

Keep four separate ideas in mind:

  1. Non-destructive layer filters: the filter settings remain available on a layer.
  2. Non-destructive channel filters: channel-based edits can also remain revisable.
  3. Pass Through groups: a group can help apply an effect across content below it.
  4. Rasterization: converting content to pixels creates a more destructive editing boundary.

Rasterize and Revert Rasterize: useful safeguards, not unlimited history

Non-raster layer types sometimes need to become raster content before certain destructive edits can be made. GIMP 3.2 adds a more deliberate workflow around this transition, including a Rasterize option in the Layer menu and Revert Rasterize for clearing destructive edits made after rasterization.

Rasterizing preserves the visible result as pixels, but it discards the same level of direct editability you had before. A Vector Layer may no longer behave as an adjustable vector object; a Link Layer may no longer function as an external, transformable source in the same way; and text-related editability can be limited after conversion.

Revert Rasterize should not be treated as an unlimited time machine. It is not equivalent to recovering every unrelated edit made later, and it is not a substitute for saving project versions. Before rasterizing an important layer, save an XCF copy or create a versioned file such as painting-v07-before-rasterize.xcf. That simple habit is still the safest fallback.

Painting improvements

MyPaint brushes respond better to zoom and rotation

GIMP 3.2 adds 20 new MyPaint brushes and makes the MyPaint Brush tool automatically adjust to canvas zoom and rotation. This is more significant for illustrators and tablet users than for photographers who rarely paint by hand.

Brush behavior that remains usable while you zoom into a detail or rotate the canvas can reduce interruptions during line work, texture painting, and cleanup. The new brushes are additional resources, not evidence of a completely new brush-engine architecture or Photoshop-style brush parity. Artists should judge them according to the marks they need to make rather than assuming that a larger brush library solves every painting limitation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Overwrite mode helps with pixel art

The new Overwrite paint mode replaces color values without normal alpha blending. GIMP specifically recommends using it with the Pencil Tool, making it useful for pixel art, hard-edged sprites, and other work where predictable single-pixel replacement matters.

Ordinary painting often blends new color and alpha with the existing pixels. A hard brush can produce a firm edge, but it does not necessarily change the compositing behavior in the same way. Overwrite mode is intended for replacing values rather than softly combining them.

Use it carefully in ordinary painting. Applying Overwrite with the wrong tool, brush, or transparency settings can produce unexpected color or alpha changes. For soft brushwork, normal painting modes are usually the safer choice.

Text editing is less awkward

The on-canvas Text Editor can be moved around the canvas and supports more common shortcuts, including bold text and pasting unformatted text. Unformatted paste is particularly useful when copying words from a browser or document and removing unwanted styling before continuing to design.

Text Outline also gains more control over outline direction, which can help with display typography, labels, posters, and title treatments. These are practical workflow improvements rather than a complete typesetting system.

Before using GIMP for production typography, test the fonts and scripts you actually need. Font rendering, right-to-left text, vertical text, and complex typography can introduce requirements that are better handled by dedicated layout software. GIMP is increasingly useful for text inside artwork, but that does not make it a full replacement for a professional page-layout application.

File-format support: broader, not universal

GIMP 3.2 improves support for several formats and workflows, including:

  • DDS BC7 export;
  • additional PSD layer styles;
  • PSB support for large Photoshop documents;
  • SVG export;
  • expanded vector options in PDF export; and
  • additional image and palette formats highlighted in the release-candidate notes.

These additions are valuable, but “opens the file” does not mean “preserves every feature.” Import and export are separate capabilities. Improved PSD support does not guarantee perfect round-tripping of complex typography, masks, layer effects, adjustment structures, Smart Objects, or application-specific metadata. A PSB may open while some editable structures or effects do not survive a return trip.

The same caution applies to SVG and PDF. Vector export is useful, but it does not mean that every part of a GIMP project remains a fully vector-native document. If a file is part of a production pipeline, open, edit, export, and reopen a representative sample before relying on it.

Small interface and workflow improvements

Several changes are modest individually but helpful in daily use:

  • Brush thumbnails can use theme colors for previews.
  • Images can be dragged onto the image tab to open them.
  • Shear and Flip tools gain keyboard shortcut support.
  • A System color scheme can follow the operating system’s theme.
  • The CMYK color selector now displays Total Ink Coverage, useful in prepress-oriented work.
  • A GEGL Filter browser helps script and plug-in developers find filters.

The CMYK coverage display is mainly relevant to print and prepress workflows. The filter browser is especially useful to developers and advanced users who need to identify GEGL filters for scripts or plug-ins. The drag-and-drop image opening, shortcuts, theme behavior, and brush previews are more likely to affect everyday users.

What GIMP 3.2 still does not fix

Plugin and script compatibility

A major version transition can expose incompatibilities. Do not assume that a plug-in compiled for GIMP 2.10 or an earlier GIMP 3.x build will work in 3.2. Confirm support for GIMP 3.x and test important plug-ins, scripts, and batch jobs before upgrading a production machine.

Photoshop compatibility

GIMP 3.2 improves selected PSD and PSB workflows, but it is not a guarantee of perfect Photoshop-document fidelity. If your work depends on Smart Objects, adjustment structures, specialized layer effects, or complex type, keep Photoshop—or another verified part of the pipeline—involved until you have tested the exact files you use.

Vector and layout work

Vector Layers are a welcome addition for shapes inside a painting. They do not replace a dedicated vector editor for complex artwork, and GIMP remains a raster-first application. Likewise, improved text handling does not make it a full layout tool.

Linked-file management

Link Layers add flexibility and responsibility at the same time. A broken path can leave a project incomplete. Store linked sources with the project, document dependencies, and test transferred projects on a second machine when collaboration matters.

The learning curve

More powerful layer behavior also means more concepts to understand: linked versus embedded content, vector versus raster layers, non-destructive filters, Pass Through groups, and rasterization. GIMP 3.2 is more capable, but not automatically simpler.

Should you upgrade?

User Recommendation Reason
GIMP 2.10 user Upgrade if you can test first The non-destructive and file-format improvements may justify the move, but plugins and older workflows need checking.
GIMP 3.0 user Upgrade for the new layer workflows Link Layers, Vector Layers, channel filters, and painting improvements are the clearest reasons.
Illustrator or painter Strong candidate Brush improvements, editable shapes, and reversible effects fit iterative artwork.
Photographer Workflow-dependent It is worthwhile for layered composites and repeated revisions, less essential for basic corrections.
Pixel artist Worth considering Overwrite mode and the Pencil Tool provide a useful hard-edged workflow.
Plugin-heavy user Test before switching Compatibility is specific to each plugin, script, and automation setup.
32-bit Windows user Check compatibility carefully GIMP 3.2.0 was the final 32-bit Windows release; 3.2.2 and later do not provide a 32-bit Windows version.

How to download and upgrade safely

  1. Download GIMP from the official downloads page, not an unverified third-party mirror.
  2. Select the package for your operating system and architecture. GIMP 3.2 is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux, with relevant Intel/x86-64 and ARM64 builds.
  3. Back up important XCF files before upgrading.
  4. Copy or organize every linked source asset alongside the project.
  5. Open representative PSD, PSB, and other production files in a test installation.
  6. Check each essential plugin, script, and batch workflow.
  7. Keep the previous installation or a rollback plan until your critical projects have passed testing.

Linux users may encounter AppImage, Flatpak, or Snap options. Requirements vary by package and distribution; the official downloads page currently warns that its AppImage requires Debian 13 or a newer distribution. On Windows, the Microsoft Store package has a Windows build requirement of 20348 following a change intended to address a potential data-loss issue. That requirement does not automatically apply to every Windows installation method.

The GIMP project also noted that its GIMP 3.2 documentation was not ready at the initial release and recommended continued use of the GIMP 3.0 documentation while documentation work continued. For exact behavior, consult the GIMP 3.2 release notes and the current downloads page. The July 2026 development update described 3.2.6 as upcoming; do not confuse that development status with a confirmed stable release.

How GIMP 3.2 compares with alternatives

  • Photoshop: better suited to users who need Adobe’s commercial ecosystem, broad industry adoption, extensive third-party support, and established Photoshop-specific workflows. It requires a subscription and is a poor fit for readers specifically seeking free, open-source software. See Adobe’s Photoshop page.
  • Affinity Photo: a polished commercial desktop editor for users who want advanced photo editing without Adobe’s traditional subscription model. Verify current platform and licensing details before buying. See Affinity Photo.
  • Krita: often the more natural choice for digital painting, comics, and animation-oriented work. GIMP remains attractive for broad raster compositing and format workflows. See Krita.
  • Inkscape: the stronger choice for serious vector artwork, logos, and diagrams. GIMP 3.2 is better viewed as a raster editor with improved vector support. See Inkscape.
  • Paint.NET: a simpler Windows raster editor for users who value a focused interface over cross-platform and advanced workflows. See Paint.NET.
  • Photopea: a browser-based editor emphasizing convenience and Photoshop-style format familiarity. Consider browser dependence and privacy requirements. See Photopea.
  • Canva: better for templates, social graphics, presentations, and quick collaborative marketing content than for precision painting, masking, or complex layer work. See Canva.

GIMP itself remains freely available, with donations supporting development. Whether it is the best tool depends on the work: GIMP 3.2 is strongest when you want a free, cross-platform editor that combines painting, compositing, external assets, and increasingly editable structure in one application.

Final verdict

GIMP 3.2 is a substantial structural upgrade rather than a cosmetic one. Link Layers and Vector Layers make iterative illustration and compositing more practical, while non-destructive channel filters, improved brushes, Overwrite mode, text refinements, and expanded format support fill in useful gaps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is not “GIMP with Photoshop Smart Objects,” a complete vector editor, or a universal PSD compatibility solution. The best upgrade strategy is to install the current stable release—GIMP 3.2.4 according to the official downloads information—then test your plugins, linked assets, fonts, and production files before committing. For painters who regularly revise layered artwork, that testing is likely to reveal a worthwhile improvement.
