The best sketchbook for colored pencils depends on the surface you like and how you work—not on a universal winner. For smooth, heavy paper, Stillman & Birn Zeta is a specification-led pick; for cold-press texture, consider Stillman & Birn Beta; Canson Artist Series Mixed Media offers fine and medium textures, while Canson Graduate Drawing is a lighter, portable option. These recommendations compare published manufacturer specifications; no head-to-head testing was conducted.
How to choose a sketchbook for colored pencil layering
If your pencils do not layer the way you want, start with the paper surface, then consider weight, media and format. A product’s listed gsm is a useful comparison, but it does not establish how many layers the paper will take or how it will respond to your pressure and technique.

Choose according to the finish and resistance you prefer.
- Weight and technique: Compare gsm when choosing between drawing and mixed-media books, but treat it as a specification—not a guarantee of performance.
- Media mix: If you also use wet media, look for a book whose maker describes it for that use. Colored pencil alone does not require a mixed-media book.
- Binding and size: A hardcover, softcover, wirebound or stapled book can suit different working and carrying habits. Check the available sizes before buying.

For a smooth drawing surface: Stillman & Birn Zeta
Zeta is the clearest fit if you want smooth paper in a heavier mixed-media sketchbook. Stillman & Birn specifies 270 gsm white paper with an ultra-smooth finish and lists colored pencils among the suitable media. The three binding styles—hardcover, softcover and wirebound—let you choose a format to suit how you work. Smooth paper is a preference, not a guarantee that every pencil or layering style will behave the same way.

For cold-press texture: Stillman & Birn Beta
Beta is the textured counterpart in this shortlist. Stillman & Birn specifies 270 gsm white paper and describes it for dry and wet media, including colored-pencil layers with a touch of turpinoid. That solvent reference describes a technique the manufacturer mentions; it does not mean solvent is necessary, or that it is appropriate for every artist or setup. Beta is available in hardcover, softcover and wirebound styles.
For a choice of grain: Canson Artist Series Mixed Media
Canson specifies 224 gsm paper with fine and medium texture surfaces, giving you two drawing feels in one sketchbook. The manufacturer lists colored pencil among its suitable media, alongside pen and ink, pastel and light washes. Choose it if having both finer and more textured surfaces matters more than selecting a single grain. Its paper weight alone does not establish a particular layering capacity.

If you use Prismacolor pencils and your current sketchbook does not layer well, the specifications can narrow the choice, but they cannot predict the result for your particular pencils, pressure or technique. Try the surface you prefer and, if possible, make a small test drawing before committing to a full project. Choose Zeta for a smooth feel, Beta for cold-press texture, Artist Series Mixed Media for two texture options, or Graduate Drawing for lighter paper and portability.
