The pattern’s effect comes from the arrangement of contrasting fabrics within each star block, rather than from sewing separate diagonal stripe bands. The American Patchwork & Quilting Editors describe it as “Clever fabric placement in each star block creates the illusion of diagonal stripes.” Six lettered blocks, A–F, are arranged in two rows and rotated to create the overall light-and-dark diagonal movement.
How big is the finished runner?
The pattern’s finished dimensions are 45-1/2 inches long by 23 inches wide. Each of its six blocks finishes at 7-1/2 inches square. These are the pattern’s stated finished measurements, not cutting dimensions.

What fabric and batting do you need?
The material quantities are specified for 44/45-inch-wide, 100% cotton fabrics, and the pattern says its measurements include 1/4-inch seam allowances. Its fabric plan calls for:
- One white fat quarter.
- Black-and-white batik pieces numbered 1 through 7.
- One-half yard of black-and-white batik No. 8 for the middle border.
- One yard total of assorted black batiks.
- One-and-a-half yards of backing fabric.
- Black batik for the borders and binding.
The pattern also specifies 54 × 31 inches of batting. It provides individual cutting counts for its block pieces; consult those instructions when cutting, rather than treating the fabric list as a substitute for the cutting plan.

How is the runner assembled?
The project uses repeated piecing techniques to build the six different block layouts, then joins and finishes the top:
- Pair marked squares, sew 1/4 inch from each side of the diagonal line, and cut along the marked line to make triangle-squares.
- Combine paired units to form hourglass units. Arrange those units with plain squares according to the instructions for blocks A–F.
- Sew the six blocks into two rows. Rotate the blocks as directed so their contrasting areas create the diagonal light-and-dark pattern.
- Add the black-batik inner and outer borders and the black-and-white batik middle border.
- Layer the top with the batting and backing, baste, quilt as desired, and bind the runner.

How does it compare with a longer two-color star runner?
The Nordic Star Table Runner by Julie Cefalu of The Crafty Quilter is a different two-color star option. Its longer, narrower proportions and adjustable block count may suit a table that needs more coverage; its construction is not stated to be the same as the Two-Tone pattern.

Which pattern should you choose?
Choose the Two-Tone runner if its 45-1/2 × 23-inch finished size and six smaller stars fit your table and you want the diagonal effect built into contrasting block placement. Consider Nordic Star if you want a substantially longer, narrower runner and the option to change its length by adding or removing a star block. Check the relevant pattern instructions for their full cutting and assembly details before beginning.
