The best sports statues make athletic achievement visible while connecting it to a city, team, or public story. Michael Jordan’s statue in Chicago captures the illusion of flight; Hank Aaron’s “Keep Swinging” in Cooperstown honors his on- and off-field legacy; and Babe Ruth’s statue in Baltimore reflects his hometown roots. Rocky Balboa is a popular sports-culture landmark, but he is a fictional character, not a real athlete.

Michael Jordan: a statue built around motion
The United Center says Jordan’s statue was unveiled on November 1, 1994, the night his No. 23 was retired. Bulls leaders hired Omri and Julie Rotblatt-Amrany to create a realistic likeness that conveyed the spectacular quality of Jordan’s skill and an illusion of flight. It stands at the arena entrance on a five-foot black granite base inscribed with his achievements.

Hank Aaron: “Keep Swinging” in Cooperstown
The National Baseball Hall of Fame introduced its bronze Hank Aaron statue, titled “Keep Swinging,” on May 23. The statue is on the museum’s first floor near the Grand Staircase and honors Aaron’s lifetime of accomplishments on and off the field.
Aaron hit his 715th career home run on April 8, 1974, passing Babe Ruth, according to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. The statue’s inscription reproduces Aaron’s words about continuing to “hammer out” justice and opportunity, a reminder that the monument’s meaning extends beyond his playing record.
Babe Ruth: a Baltimore story
Babe Ruth’s statue at Oriole Park at Camden Yards connects one of baseball’s most famous players to his hometown. MLB explains that Ruth was born and grew up in Baltimore and signed his first professional contract with the International League Orioles in 1914.

Rocky Balboa: a fictional sports icon
Rocky Balboa is a fictional boxer from the film series, not a real athlete. The Smithsonian American Art Museum catalogs the Philadelphia work as a monumental outdoor sculpture of Rocky Balboa. The official Rocky statue site says Sylvester Stallone commissioned A. Thomas Schomberg to create the statue for Rocky III.
The Philadelphia Visitor Center describes the statue and the Rocky Steps as popular attractions and says the statue is free to visit. It notes that the famous staircase has 72 steps. Philadelphia International Airport also has a separate 10-foot bronze Rocky statue at Terminal A-West, unveiled in November 2025, according to the airport.
These landmarks celebrate a sports character and the films’ cultural impact rather than a real athletic career. That distinction matters when comparing Rocky with statues of Jordan, Aaron, or Ruth.
