To use Google Fonts in Microsoft Office on Windows or Mac, install the font file in your operating system first; Office does not import it directly from Google Fonts. Then open or reopen Word, Excel, or PowerPoint and choose the installed family from its font list.
How do I add Google Fonts to Word, and what should I do if a downloaded font is not showing in Office? Follow the Windows or Mac steps below, then check that the font is installed at the system level.
What you need before you start
- A Google Fonts family you want to use.
- The downloaded font file, such as a TrueType (.ttf) or OpenType (.otf) file. If it is in a ZIP archive, extract it first.
- A desktop version of Microsoft Office.
- The license information for the family, especially if you plan to redistribute or embed the font.
Google Fonts provides fonts for web use as well as downloadable font files. Its Fonts API delivers fonts to websites through CSS; it does not install a font on your computer for desktop Office. For Office, install the font file through Windows or macOS. Google Fonts documentation

Install Google Fonts in Windows
1. Download and extract the font
- Find the family and obtain its font file from Google Fonts.
- If the file is in a ZIP archive, extract it.
- Locate the required .ttf or .otf file or files.
The available files and download interface may vary by family. Install the styles your document needs if they are provided separately.

2. Install the font
- Open the font file in Windows Font Previewer.
- Select Install.
You can also right-click a font file and select Install. On a shared computer, Install for all users may be available and may require administrator permission. Windows 10 and 11 support TrueType and OpenType font files. Microsoft: Manage fonts in Windows
3. Open Office and choose the font
Close the font previewer, then open or reopen Word, Excel, or PowerPoint. Select the family from the application’s font list. Microsoft says the installed font should appear there. Microsoft: Download and install custom fonts to use with Office
Install Google Fonts on macOS
- Locate the downloaded font file. If it is zipped, open the archive first.
- Double-click the .ttf or .otf file to open its preview in Font Book.
- Select Install.
- Close Font Book, then open or reopen Word, Excel, or PowerPoint and check the font list.
Microsoft’s detailed Mac steps describe installing the font in Font Book and then using it in Office. Do not assume an additional copy to a “Windows Office Compatible” folder is required; check current guidance for your Office version if you encounter a compatibility issue. Choose the font in Word, PowerPoint, or Excel
Word
Select text and choose the installed family from the font list. For new text, choose the font before typing. To use it consistently, update relevant styles such as Normal and heading styles. Check line breaks and page layout afterward.
PowerPoint
Select text and choose the font, or use the presentation’s theme font settings for a consistent deck. Review slides for overflow or layout changes after applying a different family.
Excel
Select cells and choose the font. For broader use, apply it to relevant ranges or cell styles. Review column widths, row heights, wrapped text, charts, and print layout.

Why isn’t my downloaded font showing in Office?
- Reopen Office. Close and reopen the application after installing the font so it can refresh its font list.
- Check the file. Make sure you extracted any ZIP archive and installed the actual .ttf or .otf file, not just the archive.
- Verify the system installation. Check whether the font appears in Windows font management or in Font Book on Mac. If it does not, try installing it again through the operating system’s font tool.
- Check the font name. Search Office for the family name shown by the operating system, which may differ from the file name.
- Distinguish local fonts from web fonts. A Google Fonts API stylesheet is for a website; it does not replace installing a font locally for desktop Office.
What happens when you share an Office file?
A font installed on your computer may not be installed on the recipient’s computer. Microsoft warns that Office can substitute an unavailable font, changing line breaks and layout. To keep an editable file consistent, consider embedding or distributing the font when the relevant license and application allow it. Microsoft’s custom-font guidance

Google Fonts and Microsoft 365 cloud fonts compared
A locally installed Google Font and an Office cloud font are different. Microsoft 365 cloud fonts are hosted by Microsoft and can render in supported Office apps without embedding, but availability depends on platform, application, build, and internet access. Licensing and commercial use
Google states that its fonts are released under open-source licenses and can be used in commercial and non-commercial projects. Check the license file supplied with the particular family for its terms, especially before redistributing or embedding font files. Google Fonts, Google for Developers
Using a font in a document and sending its font file to someone else are separate matters. Keep the family’s license information with your project, and check that your intended sharing or embedding is permitted.

Can I install a Google Font directly inside Office?
No. Install the font through the operating system, then use it in desktop Office.
Why does a shared Office document show a different font?
The recipient may not have the font installed. Office can substitute an available font, which may change the document’s layout.
