For crochet, start with moss (also called linen) stitch or single crochet for a comparatively covered fabric; choose half-double crochet when you want more height and faster growth. For knitting, garter stitch is the simplest reversible option, while seed or moss stitch adds reversible texture. No stitch is a safety guarantee. Yarn, tension, finished-fabric openings and secure finishing matter, and infant sleep guidance treats loose blankets differently from supervised cuddle or play layers.

Safety comes before stitch choice

A handmade blanket should not be presented as safe for unattended infant sleep simply because its stitch looks dense. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says that for infants under 12 months, caregivers should reduce the risk of SIDS and suffocation by keeping pillows, quilts, comforters, sheepskins, pillow-like bumper pads and pillow-like stuffed toys out of the crib. Its “Bare is Best” guidance says, “Don’t add pillows or blankets to your baby’s sleep space.”

If a caregiver is following current medical and safety guidance that permits a blanket, CPSC says to “tuck a thin blanket around the crib mattress, covering baby only as high as his/her chest.” The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) states that “Infant sleep clothing, such as a wearable blanket, is preferable to blankets and other coverings to keep the infant warm while reducing the chance of head covering or entrapment that could result from blanket use.”

How to evaluate a baby-blanket stitch

  • Coverage: Compact stitches leave fewer visible gaps. Large chain spaces and open lace need careful inspection.
  • Drape and weight: Yarn thickness, hook or needle size and tension can turn the same stitch from fluid to stiff or heavy.
  • Reversibility: Garter and seed or moss textures look similar on both sides, which is convenient for a blanket.
  • Texture: Built-in texture can add interest without sewn-on bobbles, buttons or other detachable pieces.
  • Speed and yarn use: Taller stitches grow faster; compact textured stitches may consume more yarn.
  • Edges and repairs: Simple repeats and stable edges are easier to border, inspect and mend.

Best crochet stitches

Moss or linen stitch: the versatile everyday choice

Moss stitch, also called linen stitch, alternates single crochet and chain spaces. The result is a gently textured fabric with relatively small openings, making it a strong starting point for an everyday blanket. It also handles color changes attractively.

A cited baby-blanket pattern using this stitch specifies Caron Simply Soft, a 100% acrylic yarn. That is an example, not a universal requirement: judge the actual yarn after washing and drying, and inspect the completed fabric rather than relying on the stitch name.

Single crochet: the most compact crochet fabric

Single crochet creates a stable, covered fabric and is straightforward to border or repair. It grows slowly and can feel firm when worked tightly, so loosen the tension or adjust the hook until the swatch bends comfortably. When finishing, weave the yarn tail back through several stitches to secure it, following Craft Yarn Council’s basic technique.

Half-double crochet: a practical middle ground

Half-double crochet gives more height than single crochet and usually grows faster than a compact single-crochet fabric. It can provide more coverage than many open double-crochet designs, but the actual result depends on yarn and tension. Check the swatch for drape, weight and gaps before committing to a full blanket.

Open shells, granny and lace: attractive but more exposed

Openwork can be beautiful, yet larger spaces may catch fingers, toes, pacifiers or clothing. Reserve these patterns for clearly supervised use unless the finished fabric passes a careful inspection. A solid border can stabilize an edge, but it does not eliminate risks throughout the openwork.

Best knitting stitches

Garter stitch: the dependable first blanket

Knit every row to make garter stitch. It is reversible, lies flat and is easy to memorize, so it is a reliable first blanket fabric. A Carewear pattern-book example uses 4-ply or baby/sport-weight yarn with US sizes 10–13 needles; follow your own pattern and swatch rather than treating those materials as a universal recipe.

Seed or moss stitch: reversible pebbled texture

Alternating knits and purls produces a reversible pebbled surface without attached decorations. Seed stitch can become dense and yarn-hungry if your tension is tight, so make a swatch and confirm that the blanket remains flexible.

Basketweave and cables: texture with extra substance

Basketweave and cable patterns create pronounced relief and can make a blanket heavier and less drapey. They are suitable when strong texture is wanted for supervised use. Avoid very deep relief or any embellishment that can detach.

Knitting stitch Fabric character Advantages Things to check
Garter Reversible ridges Beginner-friendly, flat, reliable on either side Can become thick or heavy depending on yarn and tension
Seed/moss Reversible pebbled texture Visual interest without sewn-on pieces May be dense and yarn-hungry; swatch for flexibility
Basketweave or cables Deep raised texture Pronounced pattern and tactile interest Can reduce drape and increase weight; avoid detachable details

Choose yarn and tools by the finished fabric

Fiber and care

A soft, machine-washable acrylic or cotton blend can be practical for frequent laundering, but verify the specific care label and texture. Avoid scratchy fibers, shedding novelty yarns and long loops that can snag. Caron Simply Soft is one documented example of a 100% acrylic yarn used in a moss-and-puff-stitch baby-blanket pattern; it does not make every acrylic yarn equivalent.

Weight, hook or needle and tension

The Craft Yarn Council’s Standard Yarn Weight System includes categories such as Sock/Fingering/Baby, Sport/Baby, DK/Light Worsted and heavier weights, each with suggested gauge ranges and hook or needle sizes. Treat those ranges as starting points. The council notes that lighter yarn combined with suitable stitches creates a “delicate, drapable fabric,” while thicker yarn creates a “sturdy fabric.”

Make a real-yarn swatch

  1. Use the exact yarn, hook or needles and stitch planned for the blanket.
  2. Work enough fabric to judge softness, flexibility, weight and visible openings—not just the appearance of a few rows.
  3. Wash and dry the swatch according to the yarn label, then reassess its hand and dimensions.
  4. Change hook or needle size or tension if the fabric is stiff, overly heavy or more open than intended.

Finishing and inspection checklist

  • Examine the whole blanket against light for holes that could catch fingers, toes, pacifiers or clothing.
  • Weave every end securely through the fabric; trim only after it is anchored.
  • Do not add buttons, beads, loose appliqués, ties, tassels or other detachable decorations.
  • Check borders and joins for loose loops and repair them before use.
  • Wash and dry as the care label directs, then inspect again for stretching, shedding or newly enlarged openings.
  • Explain the intended use to the caregiver: supervised cuddle, play, floor or stroller layer unless current sleep guidance is being followed for a secured covering.

Quick decision guide

Your priority Start with Why
Covered crochet fabric with gentle texture Moss/linen stitch Small openings and a simple repeat
The most compact crochet structure Single crochet Stable fabric, provided tension does not make it stiff
Faster crochet growth without lace-like openness Half-double crochet More height than single crochet; verify the swatch
Simple reversible knitting Garter stitch Knit every row and easy to use on either side
Reversible knitted texture without attached pieces Seed/moss stitch Pebbled surface, with possible extra density
Strong relief for supervised use Basketweave or cables Distinct texture, but potentially heavier and less drapey

The softest result is not determined by stitch name alone. Select a washable, non-scratchy yarn, match the tool to the yarn, swatch in the intended stitch and inspect the finished fabric. Those steps matter more than claiming that any one stitch is universally safest.
