For most Photoshop users, buy the Wacom Intuos Pro Medium (2025). It delivers professional pressure control, shortcut buttons, wireless connectivity and a comfortable working area without the cost, footprint or display-calibration complications of a Cintiq. Photographers and retouchers can keep using a calibrated monitor, while illustrators who insist on drawing directly on the image should choose the Wacom Cintiq Pro 17 instead. On a tighter budget, the Wacom Intuos Medium is the best conventional tablet value, and the Wacom One 14 is the most approachable display-tablet option.

The right choice depends first on whether you want a separate-screen pen tablet or a pen display, then on your monitor layout, desk space, Photoshop workflow and budget.

Best overall: Wacom Intuos Pro Medium (2025)

The Intuos Pro Medium is the safest recommendation because it solves the problems Photoshop users actually have: controlled brush strokes, precise masks, comfortable retouching and quick access to shortcuts. Its medium active area gives most people enough room for detailed work without forcing excessive arm travel or consuming a large section of the desk.

XPPen Artist 13.3 Pro V2 Drawing Tablet with Screen, 16K, Full-Laminated
  • PLEASE NOTE:XPPen Artist13.3 Pro drawing tablet Need to connect with computer, you need to use it with your computer or laptop, the 3 in 1 cable is included
  • Drawing Tablet with Screen: Tilt Function- XPPen Artist 13.3 Pro supports up to 60 degrees of tilt function, so now you don't need to adjust the brush direction in the software again and again. Simply tilt to add shading to your creation and enjoy smoother and more natural transitions between lines and strokes
  • Graphics Tablets: High Color Gamut- The 13.3 inch fully-laminated FHD Display pairs a superb color accuracy of 88% NTSC (Adobe RGB≧91%,sRGB≧123%) with a 178-degree viewing angle and delivers rich colors, vivid images, and dazzling details in a wider view. Your creative world is now as powerful as it is colorful
  • Drawing Pad: One is enough- The sleek Red Dial on the display is expertly designed with creators in mind, its strategic placement allows for natural drawing postures. With just one wheel, you can effortlessly zoom in and out, adjust brush sizes, and flip the canvas—all tailored to suit the habits of everyday artists. The 8 customizable shortcut keys allow you to personalize your setup, streamlining your workflow and enhancing creative efficiency
  • Universal Compatibility & Software Support:supports Windows 7 (or later), Mac OS X 10.10 (or later), Chrome OS 88 (or later), and Linux systems. Fully compatible with major creative software including Photoshop, Illustrator, SAI, and Blender 3D. Register your device to access additional programs like ArtRage 5 and openCanvas for expanded creative possibilities.

Photographers and retouchers can keep a calibrated external monitor unobstructed while using the pen for dodging and burning, healing, masking, Liquify and selections. The tablet also suits illustrators who prefer a neutral posture or who work across one or two existing displays. Because it is a pen tablet rather than a display, it generally costs less and avoids buying a second color-critical screen.

Choose the Intuos Pro Small if you mainly edit on a laptop, travel frequently or have very limited desk space. Choose the Intuos Pro Large for multiple large monitors, broad arm movements or illustration-heavy work, provided your desk is deep enough and the active area will not feel oversized.

Wacom’s photo-editing range presents Intuos, Intuos Pro, Cintiq and Cintiq Pro as different solutions rather than one universal winner: Wacom photo-editing tablets.

Best budget conventional tablet: Wacom Intuos Medium

The Wacom Intuos Medium Bluetooth is the value choice for a first tablet. Its larger-than-small working area is easier to map to a normal monitor, and wireless operation keeps a small desk tidy. It is a sensible purchase if you are learning pen input, editing photographs occasionally or unsure whether you need professional shortcut controls.

You give up the Intuos Pro line’s more advanced control ecosystem and premium pen features, but Photoshop still receives pressure-sensitive input. The Intuos Small Bluetooth is better for travel and laptops; the wired small Intuos, listed at $39.95 in the same US store check, is the lowest-cost entry point. Small models become less comfortable when mapped across a large or high-resolution monitor.

Best display tablet: Wacom Cintiq Pro 17

The Cintiq Pro 17 is the balanced choice for artists who want to draw directly on the image. Its 4K display, textured anti-glare surface, touch controls and Pro Pen 3 make painting, hand-drawn selections and detailed masking feel immediate. The Pro Pen 3 used by the Cintiq Pro 17, 22 and 27 supports 8,192 pressure levels and 60-degree tilt recognition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A Cintiq is a pen display, not a standalone Photoshop computer: it must connect to a Mac or PC running Photoshop and needs appropriate video, USB and power connections. It also needs a stable stand or mount so the screen is not left flat on the desk.

When the Cintiq Pro 22 makes more sense

Choose the Cintiq Pro 22 when a larger 4K canvas, reference images beside the artwork or spacious direct drawing outweigh cost and desk space. It is better suited to a permanent studio than to a compact editing desk.

Who should buy the Cintiq Pro 27

The Cintiq Pro 27 is a premium studio tool with a 26.9-inch 3840×2160 display, 99% Adobe RGB coverage, 98% DCI-P3 coverage, touch and the Pro Pen 3. Wacom states that it cannot be used without a stand or third-party mount; the stand is not included. Gamut figures describe coverage, not guaranteed color accuracy, so calibration, ambient light and Photoshop color settings still matter. Its $3,499.95 US listing was marked out of stock in Wacom’s photo-editing category when checked.

See the full specifications and mounting requirement on the Cintiq Pro 27 product page.

Best affordable display: Wacom One 14

The Wacom One 14 is the lower-cost route to direct-on-screen Photoshop work. It has a 14-inch 1920×1080 display, 98% sRGB coverage, a battery-free pen, 4,096 pressure levels, 60-degree tilt support and USB-C connectivity. It is a good fit for beginners, students and photographers who specifically want to paint or mask on the image.

Its Full HD resolution, smaller canvas, lack of touch and lower pen specification make it less suitable than a Cintiq Pro for professional illustration or a large high-resolution workspace. Before buying, verify your computer connection: the simplest single-cable setup requires USB-C with DisplayPort Alt Mode. A USB-C socket that supplies data and power but no video will not drive the display; HDMI systems may need the appropriate adapter, cables and power supply. Requirements are listed on the Wacom One 14 page.

Pen tablet or pen display: which workflow fits Photoshop?

Choose a pen tablet when

  • You are primarily a photographer or retoucher.
  • You already own a calibrated monitor you trust.
  • You use keyboard shortcuts heavily or work across multiple monitors.
  • You want lower cost, less heat and a smaller footprint.
  • You prefer an upright, unobstructed view of the whole image.

Choose a pen display when

  • You paint, draw or make hand-drawn selections for long sessions.
  • The pen-on-image relationship is more important than price.
  • You have desk depth, a suitable stand and the required video connections.
  • You accept that your hand may cover part of the artwork and that a flat screen can encourage a forward-leaning posture.

Drawing directly on a Cintiq is not automatically more precise. An Intuos Pro can be more comfortable for a retoucher who wants a neutral posture and a clear view of a calibrated monitor. Touch is similarly optional: it can speed pan, zoom and rotate gestures, but keyboard shortcuts may already be faster for your workflow.

Standalone pen computers

Devices in Wacom’s MovinkPad-style category combine a screen, pen and operating system. They are different from a tablet connected to a desktop Photoshop computer. They can make sense for portable creation, but if you already own a capable Mac or PC, an Intuos or Cintiq usually integrates more directly with your desktop files, plug-ins and monitor setup.

How to choose the right size

Small

Pick small for travel, laptop editing, a cramped desk or occasional corrections. It works well when you rely on shortcuts and make short cursor movements. On a large or high-resolution monitor, the compressed mapping can make detailed retouching feel cramped.

Medium

Medium is the default for most Photoshop users: it balances precision, comfort and desk space on one- or two-monitor systems. It is the reason the Intuos Pro Medium is the general recommendation.

Large

Large suits multi-monitor setups, big displays, illustration and full-arm strokes. It needs adequate desk depth and can feel inefficient if mapped to a small laptop screen. Wacom describes small as portable and large as suited to multi-monitor work in its photo-editing range.

Mapping multiple monitors

  • Map the tablet to one display when you need maximum precision.
  • Use the tablet’s display-toggle function to move between screens.
  • If a two-monitor map feels stretched, reduce the mapped area or select one monitor.
  • Move up to a larger tablet only when the active area feels physically cramped, not simply because your monitor count increased.

Pressure sensitivity: what matters in Photoshop

Photoshop can use pressure for brush size, opacity, flow and shape dynamics, but the largest pressure-level number is not a quality ranking. Feel also depends on initial activation force, driver behavior, nib friction, surface texture and the brush preset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To configure a pressure-sensitive brush, follow Adobe’s documented path:

  1. Install or update the current Wacom driver.
  2. Open Wacom Tablet Properties and add Photoshop under application-specific settings.
  3. Press B to select the Brush tool.
  4. Open Window > Brush Settings.
  5. Select Shape Dynamics.
  6. Set Control to Pen Pressure, then test a stroke with light and heavy pressure.

Adobe’s setup and troubleshooting guidance is available at Photoshop tablet support. That page was updated February 8, 2024, so treat its Windows-version references as guidance rather than a complete description of every current Photoshop release.

Compatibility and connection checklist

  • Install a current Wacom driver for your operating system.
  • Confirm Photoshop is supported on your Mac, PC, Chromebook or Android combination; Wacom notes that compatibility varies by product.
  • For a pen tablet, check USB or Bluetooth support.
  • For a pen display, check video output as well as USB data and power.
  • On Windows, confirm whether your Photoshop and driver combination should use Windows Ink or WinTab.
  • Check stand, mount, cable and desk requirements before ordering a Cintiq.

Common problems and fixes

Photoshop has no pressure sensitivity

  1. Confirm Photoshop is listed in Wacom application settings.
  2. Confirm the correct tablet and pen are selected.
  3. Check that the brush preset responds to pressure and that Shape Dynamics uses Pen Pressure.
  4. Restart Photoshop after changing driver settings.
  5. Update the Wacom driver; if the problem began after an update, test a previous driver version.
  6. On Windows, test the Windows Ink and WinTab configuration appropriate to your tablet and Photoshop versions.
  7. Disable press-and-hold right-click behavior if it interrupts strokes.
  8. Disconnect other pen-input devices temporarily and reboot after driver changes.

Adobe identifies outdated, corrupt or incompatible drivers, application-specific settings and Windows input-mode conflicts as common causes; pressure failure does not by itself prove the tablet is defective.

The cursor feels too fast or too slow

Adjust tablet-to-screen mapping and the active area before returning the tablet. A large tablet mapped to a small display can feel slow, while a small tablet mapped across multiple displays can feel excessively fast or wide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The pen feels slippery

Surface texture and nib friction are subjective. Where supported, try a different nib or texture-sheet option and adjust pressure settings rather than assuming one surface is universally better.

The display will not show an image

Check that the USB-C port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode, or use the required HDMI/DisplayPort adapter and power connections. Physical USB-C compatibility alone does not guarantee video.

The Cintiq is too expensive

For most photo editors, move to the Intuos Pro Medium. You lose direct-on-screen drawing but retain pressure input, shortcut controls and your existing calibrated display.

Final verdict

Buy the Wacom Intuos Pro Medium (2025) for the best all-around Photoshop workflow. Choose the Wacom Intuos Medium for value, the Cintiq Pro 17 for professional direct drawing, and the Wacom One 14 for an affordable display. Reserve the Cintiq Pro 22 or 27 for artists with the space, stand, workstation and budget to justify a large 4K studio canvas.
