Short answer: the current iPad Pro (M5) is the best tablet-first choice for demanding Lightroom and Photoshop work. Choose the Surface Pro 12th Edition if you need full desktop Photoshop, Lightroom, Lightroom Classic, plug-ins, and conventional Windows file management. The Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra is the strongest Android option, while the current iPad Air offers the best balance for many photographers.
Operating system matters more than a benchmark score. iPadOS and Android run mobile Lightroom; iPadOS also has Photoshop for iPad. Windows tablets run the desktop Adobe applications, but ARM compatibility and accessory costs require closer checking.

How Photoshop and Lightroom differ by platform
iPadOS
Compatible iPads run Photoshop for iPad and Lightroom mobile. Adobe’s iPad FAQ explains that qualifying plans can include desktop Photoshop, iPad Photoshop, Lightroom and Lightroom Classic, but Lightroom Classic itself is not an iPad app: Adobe’s Photoshop for iPad FAQ. iPad versions are excellent for masking, local adjustments, culling and retouching, but do not automatically provide every desktop tool, script, plug-in, font or automation workflow.

Android
Adobe confirms Lightroom mobile for Android and iPadOS and synchronization with Lightroom on desktop or tablet when the account, plan, storage and sync setup are configured correctly: Adobe Lightroom mobile. An Adobe announcement described Android Photoshop as forthcoming; that announcement is not proof of current general availability or feature parity: Adobe announcement. Confirm the current Google Play listing and supported features before treating an Android tablet as a Photoshop machine.
Windows
Surface Pro and compatible Windows 2-in-1s install desktop Photoshop, Lightroom and Lightroom Classic. This is the only category here that directly supports the full desktop catalog application. Snapdragon systems can run many Windows applications well, but check every plug-in, camera utility, printer, scanner, driver and other legacy peripheral before purchase.

1. iPad Pro (M5): best overall
The current iPad Pro is the strongest tablet-first combination of display quality, pen interaction and processing headroom. Apple identifies the M5 generation and publishes GPU gains over M4 for demanding workloads on its product page; those are Apple’s own claims, not independent benchmark results: Apple iPad Pro.

2. iPad Air: best value iPad
The current iPad Air retains the iPad Photoshop and Lightroom workflow while costing less than Pro. It suits photographers who edit cloud-connected libraries, travel with a Pencil and do not need the largest display or maximum sustained performance. Verify the current chip, Pencil compatibility, storage and display on Apple’s iPad Air page.
3. iPad: best budget iPad
The base iPad is a sensible entry to Lightroom mobile and Photoshop for iPad. It is best for light RAW selections, adjustments, learning and social exports rather than large layered composites, huge offline libraries or print-critical production. Confirm the current generation and Pencil support at Apple’s iPad page.
4. Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra: best Android tablet
The Ultra provides the largest Android workspace and an S Pen-centered experience. Samsung’s June 2026 US MSRP document lists 256GB, 512GB and 1TB versions at $1,299.99, $1,499.99 and $1,899.99 respectively. These are MSRP signals, not guaranteed street prices: Samsung MSRP document.

- Choose it for: Lightroom mobile, a huge canvas, media use and Samsung-device integration.
- Avoid it for: Lightroom Classic, desktop Photoshop, or a compact travel kit.
- Check: display mode, regional app support and whether your preferred storage configuration supports expansion.
5. Galaxy Tab S11: best smaller premium Android tablet
The S11 keeps Samsung’s premium software and pen experience in a more portable size. Samsung lists a 12GB/256GB Wi-Fi configuration at $999.99 in the June 2026 US MSRP file. It is a good Lightroom mobile companion, but its smaller workspace is less comfortable for detailed retouching than the Ultra.
6. Galaxy Tab S10 FE+: best large-screen Android value
The S10 FE+ is aimed at lighter Lightroom mobile work. Samsung’s June 2026 MSRP signals are $699.99 for 8GB/128GB and $819.99 for 12GB/256GB. Midrange performance makes it less suitable for heavy RAW batches, complex layered files and sustained exports.
7. Surface Pro 12th Edition: best for desktop Adobe software
Microsoft’s current page identifies the 12th Edition with Snapdragon X-series processors: Surface Pro. It can replace a laptop when paired with a keyboard, mouse, external storage and suitable display. Buy it when Lightroom Classic, desktop Photoshop, plug-ins, local catalogs or tethered accessories are non-negotiable. Budget separately for the keyboard and Surface Pen, and validate ARM support before ordering.

8. Surface Pro 11th Edition: best Windows value when discounted
The 11th Edition remains relevant only when current stock, warranty and pricing make it substantially cheaper than the 12th Edition: Surface Pro 11th Edition. It still offers desktop applications, but an older platform may have a shorter support runway and different compatibility considerations.
9. Current non-Surface Windows 2-in-1: best alternative
A current Lenovo Yoga, HP 2-in-1, Dell convertible or ASUS ProArt/Zenbook can provide Intel or AMD compatibility, more ports, removable storage or a lower total cost. Treat this as a category rather than a single model: compare the exact CPU, RAM, display, pen, card-reader support, USB-C speed and warranty. Many are laptops that fold into tablet mode, not comfortable handheld tablets.

Display suitability
- Wide gamut, OLED or HDR can improve viewing, but none guarantees calibration or accurate exports.
- Check color modes, reflections, brightness consistency and whether a vivid mode exaggerates saturation.
- Turn off Night Shift, eye-comfort, adaptive-color and vivid-display modes when judging color.
- For print-critical work, use a calibrated external reference and proof on the intended output device.
Performance and memory
Lightroom culling and adjustments are easier workloads than layered Photoshop composites, AI tools, panorama stitching, noise reduction and batch exports. More memory helps, but app memory limits, storage speed, thermal throttling, screen resolution and optimization also determine sustained behavior. A benchmark alone does not predict RAW export time.

RAW compatibility
Support depends on your camera model, Adobe Camera Raw or Lightroom version, operating system and whether you use native RAW, Smart Previews or rendered DNG. Check Adobe’s current camera and lens support database for newly released or unusual cameras before purchase.

Cloud originals, Smart Previews, exports, video and app caches consume space quickly. iPad storage is not normally upgradeable; Samsung expansion depends on the exact model and region. USB-C drives, hubs and card readers can make a tablet much more capable, but may compete with charging and reduce portability.
Safe import sequence
- Import the camera card through a compatible reader or computer.
- Keep the original RAW files and make a second copy before formatting the card.
- Cull and rate, then edit offline only after required originals or Smart Previews are downloaded.
- Sync or export and verify that edits, metadata, originals and final JPEGs appear on the desktop.
- Check cloud capacity and sync status; a full account or incomplete upload can leave projects unavailable.
- Be cautious when deleting synced images, because removal can propagate across devices.
Stylus, keyboard and total system cost
Apple Pencil compatibility varies by iPad model and is often extra: Apple Pencil. Samsung commonly centers the workflow on an S Pen; confirm inclusion for the exact tablet: Samsung tablet accessories. Surface Pen and keyboards are separate unless a bundle says otherwise: Surface Pen.
Pressure sensitivity, tilt, hover, palm rejection and shortcut controls matter most for masks, healing and detailed retouching. Add the pen, keyboard or trackpad, protective case, USB-C hub, card reader, external SSD, charger, Adobe plan and cloud storage when comparing systems. Final buying checklist
- Identify whether you need desktop Photoshop, Lightroom desktop or Lightroom Classic.
- Confirm your camera’s RAW and lens support.
- Choose at least 256GB unless your workflow is deliberately cloud-first.
- Price the pen, keyboard, case, hub, SSD, Adobe plan and cloud storage together.
- Test your plug-ins, fonts, drivers, printers and scanners on Windows ARM before committing.
- Plan two copies of originals before formatting any memory card.
- Match the display to web, social, print or HDR delivery and keep color modes consistent.
For most serious tablet editing, buy the iPad Pro. For a genuine laptop replacement with Lightroom Classic and desktop Photoshop, buy the Surface Pro. Choose Samsung when Android and a large S Pen canvas are the priority, and accept that mobile app capabilities are not the same as Adobe’s desktop tier.
